Kanye barley makes any beats anymore, he tapped out just before Graduation came out. If you scan his liner notes for his albums after that album he gets a shit ton of "help" executive an co-producing his tracks. Kanye is good at seeing other with talent and linking up with them. He's a aggregator and source-seeker of talent and knowledge but he dosn't hold much if any himself.

He would be the type that reads the reference pages on Wikipedia topics vs the wiki article sections on that topic.

You don't hear him getting physochoical or talking red pill. He's very basic and just talks in abstracts with his fame as a box to project downwards onto others.

His best talent is his ability to project his grandeur onto others. That is a crafty skill not all have.

Yezzus was Kanye making music by himself left to his own mind and it wasn't that great....

I thought it was easily one of his worst albums, and I'm not gonna lie when I say I probably only liked 1-2 beats on the whole thing.

Which says something because I've really liked a lot of his past beats on his own stuff, Common, Slum Village, etc.

There's gotta be hundreds of albums I'd rather listen to before that one....

I see this argument all over the internet. Some people hate Hip Hop so much that they all regurgitate this tired sentiment based on a distorted perception.

Mozart is considered a genius. For what? Arranging instruments into music. Directing people what and how to play.

What does a Hip Hop producer do? Arrange instruments into music. So, if you write music on a piece of paper and have it played live, you're a genius. If you record those same instruments and use them to create a piece of music using an MPC, keyboard, or production software, you're talentless.

It's stated as derogatory that the music "loops" as if other music featuring vocals is this sonic soundscape that never repeats itself. They are dismissed for "requiring a laptop".

John Lennon required three other dudes with their own instruments and voices. Tchaikovsky required an entire orchestra at times.

The funny thing is that people act like learning to play the guitar is rocket science. In reality, someone could learn to replicate a basic song on the guitar just as easily (if not easier) as doing the same thing with a production program (being already given the appropriate samples). Using that instrument to create music that is somewhat unique and good enough to appeal to people is the hard part.

Another interesting point is grown men's obsession with hating on guys like Justin Bieber.

This kid grew up poor in a single parent household and was playing multiple instruments by the time he was a teenager. He was discovered off pure hustle. Yet people were ruthless in their dismissal of his "talent" before he was even an adult simply because they don't like his style of music (I suspect there are also other factors at play).

As a disclaimer, I'm not trying to start an argument about the best music genre or even suggest that someone like Mozart or Lennon weren't amazing musicians. I'm simply setting the record straight over this constant attack and dismissal of Hip Hop as a musical style based on bias and misinformation. These people pretend to be experts on a genre that they don't even being to understand.

I like how the tracks transition throughout between those distorted bass beats with Kanye taking a really choppy, abrasive lyrical style to the flowing vocals backed by something more mellow.

As for the OP, Kanye is taking a major L with this whole Kim K thing. Not sure what he's doing.

I would like to know how the Kardashians can live so well, I see the younger sisters driving G - Wagons.

I wouldn't say Kanye is an idiot, not like anybody will want her now that she has a child.

As a sidenote - I went to his concert with Jay-Z and it was incredible.

Kanye is decent, great at arranging and producing samples, but his lyrics make me want to shoot myself. He thinks he has these great revelations, but anyone else who hasn't read shit in his life would probably think that too.

He is immodest, which in our culture isn't a crime, and he understands the value of marketing and exposure, but his music, were it not for his escapades in the media, would be no more significant than any other pop-hip-hop-electro bullshit out there.

Definitely agree with his ability to find and work with others.. successfully. Yezzus has many more producers who worked on it(Timbaland, Pharell, Mike Dean, MikeWMadeIt, DaftPunk, no Id and that does not include the guys who are most likely the ones who put in the grunt work for the track) than HB & 808z. ( Kanye, Jeff Bhasker, and No ID. This is him mastermindin' a project. Every track on the Drop out, Late registration was produced by Kanye. What you said about projecting his fame thru his music, you are 100 percent right, but that's industry standard. what top 40 is talkin bout transcendence? haha shit like that ain't part of the plan.

You're making the false assumption I'm dismissing all Rap and Hip-Hop, based on not recognising Genius in West's music, with the added implication that this is racially-based. By this logic, because I refuse to recognise Genius in the music of Nirvana for much the same reasons (lack of effort in the writing, simplistic melodies and not trying to push the boundaries to elevate material), I also hate all rock music and white people.

Admittedly, I dislike harmonic stasis and repetition in classical music. The eighties work of Michael Nyman frustrates me, no end, though he's dramatic enough that he's begging to be sampled and integrated into rap music.

All art isn't equal, though I'll admit it's so largely-personal and subjective that it's impossible to reach consensus on what is great and what isn't. If Kayne does it for you, great, but I simply want more than what he's offering, and don't hear Genius in the arrangement, based on 35+ years of arranging music, and knowing how easy computers make thing having used them for years: I just note the rote nature of machines, and hear lost opportunities to add aural and harmonic interest and strengthen the material through certain arrangement tricks, much in the way the rock music of Nickleback leaves me wanting more.

I make my critical decisions based on personal experience and arrangement knowledge, and understand just how easy computers make this sort of thing. For example, a friend asked me a while back how to fit a sample of a bad 80's song 'Rush Hour' into a track he was doing, and he just couldn't make it work. My advice was to treat the Em drone of the track as being a relative minor to the sample's key: pitch it to G Major.

I was in a hotel room with only a lap top, thought "Songs with Em drones, what's on the computer.... Shep Pettibone's Remix of West End Girls, Eleanor Rigby" and had cut loops out the mp3's, played them together in Ableton Live, then cut and repitched 'Rush Hour', dropped it in, then threw in a filtered guitar riff from REM's The One I Love just because. Less than 3 minutes later, I can show him proof of concept, and he calls me a 'lifesaver'.

I did build that into a full track for my own amusement -fuck knows where it is now - but this is without any timestretching or production which would have smoothed it out.

Knowing the simplicity and automation of the process is why I don't respect this kind of thing. I was into sampling when John Oswald was getting sued for his Plunderphonics series and the Latin Rascals knew how to use a razor to cut inches of tape knowing exactly how long it would translate to in beats per minute, and that kind of audio terrorism (and I'd include record scratching in this) was dirty, thrilling and exciting. Dragging and dropping loops is middle class and corporate to my ears. It's so safe.

Laptops also removes the human element from a performance for me, which is the main way I differentiate artists from each other. What makes this artist unique from others? What can I only get from them?

Do you respect all music equally? What about Meaghan here? I mean, she's arranged a song that people seem to have responded to, no doubt on a Laptop. Should she be applauded? What factors do you bring into your eventual decision? If they're valid in your case, why, in mine, are they evidence of ignorance?
