I came close to acquiring a fully remote setup this year, but came up short much to my chagrin. Though I had expanded flexibility that allowed me to work remotely and travel on some days, I didn't get the full 24/7 setup I had hoped for. That may change now once again as I recently interviewed with a consulting firm for a team in which many members choose to work remotely. I shall get that chance if I get the job, allowing me to earn US dollars regardless of where I choose to live in the world.


That said, there's a book I've been keeping my eye on called Remote: Office Not Required. It's going to be released on 10/29 but is available for an audio listen right now.

There's quite a few companies that have adopted a ROWE (Results Only Work Environment) culture. A popular book released some years ago and endorsed by Tim Ferriss spearheaded the movement.

I expect this trend to only accelerate in the coming years, particularly for jobs that are more support-oriented in nature and rely less on "face time" with the client/customer.

With some research and diligence you can find companies to apply to that already incorporate these principles.

This is probably one of the easiest ways to set yourself up with an overseas lifestyle while still earning USD. With the flexibility of time and space, you can also look into generating other revenue streams simultaneously. Many possibilities.

I have taken a few week long "trips" or working holidays recently to test the waters of being able to go remote full time.

I am also consulting at the moment.

One company I am having to spend at least two days a week at their studio, so far I am at a loss as how to get this down to zero days. The other two companies should be ok, but I am not sure how they would feel about paying me if I was not in the same city.

Yeah, I gotta a few freinds at the USPTO that passed there Work from home, test or whatever. They are living in MIA and ATL, one has been in all the exotice places we talk about on here. Maybe I should introduce him to the forum. Also, hes getting I THINK GS13 pay. I dont wanna elaborate to much more, but some of these guys who get quick at there job, tell me they do a solid 20 hours balls to walls work a week and are making 6 figs. Not a bad deal if u got a stem major. But it takes two years min to get to the location independant phase.

Alot of companies are not really trying to deal with the hefty costs of having alot of workers travel anymore if they can help it. Instead they opt to build functionality that makes essentially all functional elements of the business able to be managed from anywhere. The data storage industry uses this alot where you can manage data in datacenters and client domains from anywhere with a internet connection. Also using technologies like WebEx, Skype, instant messenger can be very effective in communicating with team members and clients, and although not as effective as face-to-face communication, it is also much cheaper.

I haven't even seen most of my team members up close, but we work seamlessly due to the proliferation of tools like WebEx, which is almost like being next to the person. I've been lucky enough to have a entry level gig where I only need to be in the office twice a week, with me eventually getting 'cut loose' by the end of the year and being 100% from home.

For those of you that work remotely and travel overseas, how do you circumvent the high costs of making calls back to the US, if you are in say, Brazil, but need to be on conference calls daily? Domestically, it seems pretty easy to be mobile, but if you have to be online during certain hours, international travel can be a little tricky depending on location. Has this been anyone's experience?

Thanks, MagicJack looks very promising. Google Voice is a consideration but would definitely addup during a long trip especially with 2 or 3 hour long calls in a day.

NP. Magicjack with an actual landline phone plugged into my laptop got better signal than the magicjack app on my smartphone when overseas haha

G Voice is free when calling US numbers, even if you're in another country.
