I think we should all striving towards looking as attractive as possible so that we can do the kinds of things that Good Looking Loser talks about. I also think that there is a place for Roosh's Elderly chat approach where you the text of your conversation reads in such a way that it portrays you starting at little or no investment, and subsequently building and ramping up to being more direct.

Before I got an iphone, I would use a lot of low-investment openers- things that you could ask anybody, male or female, that could be looked up on an iphone.

"Do you know what time it is?"
"Do you know if it's going to rain today?"
"Do you know where I can find xxx(the nearest pet shop)?"

Now that I have an iphone, I think it kind of gives my hand away too soon if I ask these questions and then take out my iphone later in the conversation.

Any recommendations on low-investment openers in the iphone age?

Maybe something more improvised- like commenting on her clothes or something..

Maybe how about not needing an excuse to talk to somebody. If you need one for girls, I always go with shoes. Plus, they can never figure out if you're subtle negging them or not. Unless she wears Uggs, in which case I outright neg them.

If she's attracted she probably won't even put the two-and-two together and if she does, she won't care because she's attracted.

But you can make these openers noniphoneable too

"Do you know what time it is?" --> What time's the next bus run?
"Do you know if it's going to rain today?" --> I hope it doesn't rain today, this is awesome weather. What do you think?
"Do you know where I can find xxx(the nearest pet shop)?" --> Where do you think the best pizza in town is?

If those openers are getting you good results, I'd say stick with them. If it ain't broke...

And if anyone calls you out on it, just say you don't have a data plan, or better yet, you only use your phone for phone calls/texts. I like to downplay my knowledge of technology to bishes.

As long as you don't scare the cat, your ramble is tight and she's attracted, she won't care like Pyre said or will rationalize it later.
