If you live in California or Texas, there is no reason to use anything except maybe in Winter if you were born in dry skin. Winter in somewhere like Russia or Canada is a completely different story, and pretty much everyone has to use something. It's possible to He Man through it, but by the time you're 40 you'll look a decade older than you otherwise would have.

The picture is of a homeless he-she in Russia. That's what Winter does if you're outside long enough.

OK. I stand corrected. Maybe my whole assessment of diet contribution to bad skin was off base? I did NOT really think about cold weather contribution, and I do personally know about being exposed to extremely cold weather. When I was a kid i grew up in seasonal extremely cold weather, and that is one of the reasons that I moved to beach area California, where there are neither warm or cold extremes. Get spoiled in that regard.

Ok, now I agree that with this person in the pic, likely we are talking about long exposure to extremely cold weather - that may NOT even rise to the level of frost bite? And, you may be correct that in those kinds of environmental circumstances, a guy may need to wear some kind of lotion if he is going to be outside for extended periods of time during extremely cold weather.

And, maybe even getting back to the subject of this thread, if living in extremely cold weather, there may be even less reason to bath or shower as frequently b/c a guy would be sweating less and a guys natural oils are gonna be needed to protect the skin?

Correct. It's more about warming up than cleaning. In cold climates, saunas are popular because they help to get rid of the dead layer of skin.

RE: Bathing once a week for better skin!
This is what I do, and it seems to work ok:

Showers one to two times a week and after sweaty workouts. If I washed my hair that week, I may not wet my hair at all.
Baking soda with water, ~1:8. Then ACV with water, 1:8-1:12. Limit this to once a week.
Luke warm water, working my way to cold.
Tend to keep my car windows down, to avoid the wind whipping and drying out my skin.

No moisturizers currently. Does anyone know about ensuring moist skin through diet? I never got around to moisturizing regularly.

The single best way to ensure moist skin through diet is simply to drink plenty of water. If you stay well hydrated, that will affect all organs in your body, including the skin.

In the last couple of years, I have been gravitating towards low carb and paleo eating, so I try to find dietary solutions that do NOT go contrary to my interpretation of those schools of thought.

Personally, so far, I have NOT had dry skin problems. From what I have gathered of various readings on the topic, it seems that good hydration is important (as mentioned by Liz of Oz in his above post).

Additionally, I am somewhat persuaded that eating oily fish, such as salmon, sardines or cod liver oil is good, and personally, I try to get some avocados in my diet, coconut oil, animal fat such as lard, and whole eggs, including the yolks. Ultimately, I am engaging in a form of bro-science b/c I am not really sure whether these foods are helping my skin - or if i am just genetically gifted... he he he .. just kidding... -

The below article by Chris Kresser seems to confirm several aspects of my bro science to suggest increasing omega 3 to omega 6 ratios in diet.

Chris Kresser wrote a series of articles on skin health. His second article of the series dealt with skin and diet.

http://chriskresser.com/nutrition-for-he...kin-part-2

Also, back to the hydration theory, if we exercise, we need to make sure we have enough salt in our diet, and that will balance our hydration. Kresser discusses salt in a series of articles - one of them is:

Thanks for the advice.

JayJuanGee, lard is not held in high regard among Paleo devotees, because lard from farm pigs tends to be much higher in omega-6 oils and lower in saturated fat, plus pork carries more toxins than beef does, as pigs eat dirty and digest less. Tallow is a better choice, especially if grass-fed. Same for lamb fat.

Basil:
Overall I agree with you and I think that you are spot on in your explanation of some of the latest paleo discussions regarding getting naturally raised fats, to assist with the omega 3 to 6 ratios and to lessen toxin exposure.

I suppose this is where my personal preferences kind of devolve into bro-science and/or my own hunches.

My hunch is that the organic and/or grass fed label is NOT really worth the price premium difference and sometimes the difficulty in getting it or verifying that what you are getting is as labelled.

Accordingly, in my thinking, it is much better to eat animal meat and fat of any kind and to steer clear of carbs and processed foods. In this regard, if a guy is regularly eating meat (even if industrial meat), then his body will be strong enough to fight off some of the impurities of the industrial raised meat. Also, we are heavily propagandized about impurities in meat without real science to show the differences and also in my view, led in a direction that has a tendency to cause the perfect to be the enemy of the good. In other words, it may be better not to strive for the perfect.

At the same time, in my own circumstances, I have stocked up on keeping omega 3s in my pantry. Accordingly, in about the past year, if during any given day (or week) I get the sense that I am eating a lot of foods that are high in omega 6, i will purposefully eat a can(s) of sardines and/or drink some cod liver oil, to help with the balance to increase the omega 3s that I am taking.

I feel that in recent times I am doing much better with eating foods with omega 3s b/c previously, i had not appreciated the value of these fish foods and i did not maintain them on stock in my shelves. Yes, maybe a little bro science here, and I am not disagreeing with you, but just saying that my choice of trade offs and what is part of my current practice to make sure that i have omega 3s on hand to balance the omega 6s.... and i have a hunch that the toxins are overrated to scare the masses away from recognizing the benefits of eating meat and animal fat.

Yeah I agree that grass fed beef doesn't really make sense for a lot of people, me included. I will feel much better eating two lbs of decent grain fed beef than I would a pound of grass fed.

I also get a specific hunger for red meat, and nothing else can quench it. Beef, lamb and goat - pork and chicken just won't cut it. Personally, I always opt for beef over pork.

Grain fed beef isnt that bad because most of it is still saturated fat. Easier to get omega 3 from fish and more fat from coconut oil and pastured butter.

Regarding grass fed versus grain fed beef, to some extent, it is a practicality matter, yet if cows ate grass, like they naturally are suppose to, their fat would be very high in omega 3 - which goes towards fixing our omega 3 to 6 ratio matters.

Pork can also be high in omega 3, if they graze more naturally. The thing with industrial pork, however, is that they are forced to eat a lot of grains b/c grains will make them fat faster - even though pigs are designed in such a way that they can eat almost anything and still be fine - they are more like humans in that regard.

I mean I think that pigs can take a variety in their diet a lot better than cows. Now, cows are designed to mostly eat grass -and they have less of a biological tolerance to being able to eat and tolerate other kinds of foods, such as grains. So when cows eat other kinds of food, such as grains, they suffer considerable inflammation and other negative health effects (right before they are slaughtered).

Personally, I think that guys will be stronger from incorporating fatty cuts of meat into their diets, and maybe incorporating a little variety but to go with preferences, such as if you like red meat, then eat that with the fat included.. maybe throw in a few organ meats here and there too or mix the organ meats in with your hamburgers (without the bun of course).

Regarding Udoerasmus, I don't think he knows more about fat than anyone alive b/c from my limited knowledge there is a real problem with emphasizing flax seeds as a source of Omega 3 fats (and deemphasizing animal fats) - b/c there are three kinds of omega 3s ALA (found in plant oils), EPA, and DHA (both commonly found in animal oils – seafood – but can be obtained from grass fed land animals, also), and flax seeds only has ALA. If the body is only getting omega 3s from ALA, then it has to convert that ALA to EPA and DHA, which some of the omega 3s may not be absorbed if the body has to convert it.

I am skeptical when a guy is emphasizing plants as being the best nutrition source, including Michael Pollen, who is famous in pop culture for this myth (but I think even Pollen is coming around to meat a little bit), there are a lot of studies out there that show that meat – especially organ meats are amongst the most nutritious bang for the buck foods.

Anyhow, getting back to fats, Mary Eng has a seminal work that she published in 2000 -Know your Fats.

http://www.amazon.com/Know-Your-Fats-Und...+mary+enig

She goes over the spectrum of fats and also had been discussing problems with transfats in the 80s, when transfats were supposedly healthy, she was telling everyone that transfats were NOT healthy b/c our bodies cannot absorb them and we suffer from inflammation when we ingest them.

Many people will also cite to Mary Eng’s book and to other subsequent writings that she has made with Westin Price foundation pertaining to eating whole foods. In my humble opinion, any expert on fat better start out with understanding the goodness in saturated fats including the consumption of various animal fats. Mary Eng, in her subsequent writings, emphasizes the nutritional benefits of coconut oil, as well animal fats.

No-shampoo truly works. I think people just quit using logic somewhere along the way. Considering that shampoo wasn't invented until the 1800s, how did people wash their hair before then? I just don't believe that the human body was designed so that it required a daily chemical cleansing.

I think the same thing for toothpaste (although I do brush my teeth twice daily). Look at animals - they certainly don't brush their teeth, and they have no issues. They don't go to dentists and they don't have the dental problems that we have. Why is that?

Generally, one does not smell anywhere except pits, crotch, and between toes. (shave pubes, btw). Use baby wipes for those areas and you're good to go. I bath, never shower, roughly every week to 10 days. Wipe the ass whenever you can (butt spray is great; i use my wife's dove body mist)

If you wear caps/hats your hair will smell so no cap preferably, but quick rinse of hair and moisturizer, and again, you're good to go.

BTW, the most repulsive thing is to smell the heavy scent of soap/body spray. Ladies are especially guilty of this.

Showering once a week reminds me of the argument that drinking bottled water will cause cancer. Plenty of people live well into their 90's who went their whole lives without getting a skin disease. I enjoy not smelling like shit.

I tried the no-shampoo thing and it sucked for me, my hair's too oily.

For weekends I have a DGAF attitude and don't shower so only M-F am I "clean", but I don't notice being stinky on the weekends.

RE: Bathing once a week for better skin!
I speak from experience that reducing number of showers per week does in fact help with the health of your skin.

Throughout high school I would shower daily before school in hope of keeping my face free of pimples and such to no avail. I would regularly get pimples so large and red that you might as well have had a giant sign pointing to them, along with the smaller "white heads" on my forehead, nose and chin.

After graduating I saw no need to shower everyday and so I cut back to 1-3 times a week. Within a couple of weeks my face cleared up significantly, however I do suffer from serious B-O so when it came time to study again I went back to showering everyday before class and sure enough the spots came back, serious confidence blow.

I've now gone back to a 1-3 times a week shower regime unless I've had a busy day in which I've gotten seriously dirty. As for the B-O problem I've found a pretty effective counter measure thanks to the guys over at Return of Kings. Bi-Carb Soda works as an amazing agent to reduce smell from sweat, I also use it weekly in my shower to wash my hair, it keeps it healthy and shiny while also removing any excess grease that may have accumulated.

Ok guys. You got me convinced.

I will keep showering every day, since I work out (thus sweat) every day. But I will restrict my shampoo use to my armpits and crotch area only. I was the kinda guy that would need a new a bottle of shampoo every other week.

I'm curious to see what the effects will be. Will report back.
