"We Are Men" replaced by "2 Broke Girls" on network TV
I just came across this piece of the television industry news:

“We Are Men” is no more. [< The deadly irony in this wording is bone-chilling.]

The comedy, which starred Jerry O’Connell, Tony Shalhoub, Chris Smith and Kal Penn, has been pulled from the network’s schedule, effective Oct. 14.

The series, about a group of single men living in the same apartment building, premiered Sept. 30 to a 2.0 rating/5 share in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic — the network’s lowest-rated in-season comedy debut on record, and dropped from there with its second season.

“2 Broke Girls” will move into the show’s 8:30 time slot.

The new Chuck Lorre comedy “Mom” will remain in place at 9:30"

Kat Demmings is abismal. Hated her since the 40 year old Virgin. Anna Faris is a talent. I have yet to see anything that I did not like her in. Chuck Lorre is known for hokey, dumbed-down characters and dialogue, but still somewhat funny shows, so I kind of feel sorry for Faris, but maybe she still make it a hit.

I can't stomach TV anymore, except for re-runs of Two and A Half Men and Magnum PI, so I will not be watching either way.

TV is now a losers medium. Men moved on long ago.

It's like complaining about what are the popular IRC channels left in 2013.

I watched the initial episode of We Are Men. It was horrible. And its totally relatable to my lifestyle as well. Acting, plot and the jokes sucked, it was as if someone was intentionally mocking the single lifestyle.

Pretty much what it was to me. Plus they put it up against MNF. What guy watches sitcoms on a regular basis? None of the fellas I know do.

Reppin the Jersey Shore.

The preview actually had me thinking this would be a watchable show.

2 Broke Girls is fucking terrible. Kat Dennings' character is an extreme caricature of everything that's screwed up about American women.

RE: "We Are Men" replaced by "2 Broke Girls" on network TV
It's not that the audience didn't accept a show about men. It's that domestic dramas about men don't usually work.

This genre is derived from soap operas, which started on radio, and which have always drawn female audiences. Females tend to care about women's everyday lives because that's what makes them them. What defines men is what they do. Hence, this show had no audience. It also didn't help that it was goofy, not truly funny and talked down to the very audience it was supposed to relate to.

Anyway, to have a drama that works for men, the male characters have to be *doing* things, not talking about doing things. Look at "House," "The Sopranos," "Entourage" or "Breaking Bad." All have/had defiantly male characters who are often bastards. But they worked for male and female audiences because everyone can relate when men are defined first by their work and second by their personal lives.

The cancellation of this show is evidence the audience knows that on an instinctive level. So there will never be a male counterpart to "Girls" in the traditional sense.

If that's what they were seeking to do, here is how they could have done it. They could have taken four middle-aged guys, had them working at casinos and strip clubs in Vegas and making their dysfunctional midlife crises (or whatever) wrap around their jobs. For example, you have the bouncer who fucks everything but longs for the bride who left him. Throw in a bit of "Swingers" and you can get away with pick-up artist Red Pill stuff.

That, I think, the audience would have accepted. But with rare exceptions (Woody Allen) no one wants to hear men sit around and whine about their personal lives. A male "Sex and the City" would be an unintentional parody.

What makes this a sticky topic is that audiences will seemingly accept shows centered around women's work ("Grey's Anatomy") so it appears that women have invaded a male space. But not quite. Those shows are really soap operas with "work" thrown in as a side dish. And they usually end up centered around a an Alpha male all the women think is "dreamy."
