Is this common?

Here in the UK it is pretty unheard of for a guy to have to share a room with another guy whilst at university. Although a friend of mine told me he did this - but I could never understand how that came about.

Under no circumstances would I ever agree to share a bedroom with another guy. I am amazed that this is considered normal in America.

So - I just want to clarify - is this common? And how do people cope?

I cannot imagine anything worse.

At most Universities, it's actually a requirement for first year freshman that they live in a dormitory with a roommate.

Even after leaving the dorms most guys and girls choose to live with a friend to save money on rent.

At my college it's optional, if you want an absurdly cheap room you can share with someone. Mostly it's foreign students and people on financial aide here.

Although my friend signed up for it and then lucked out when his roommate moved out, and the school never found a new roommate or adjusted the price.

Very common.

I never lived in the dorms, but looking back I definitely should have.

Not all dorms are one room shared by two guys. You can get private dorms. Some dorms are more like an apartment complex and you may have three bedrooms with 3-6 guys with a shared living room and kitchen. Some dorms are like jail cells with bunk beds. All depends.

Generally one room dorms with two dudes are for freshmen though, so 18 year old kids. Not as big a deal to a 18 year old freshmen as it would be to a 22 year old senior, or a 24 year old senior like most people do in the US now. I think the 6 year plan is the way to go, especially if being supported on your parents dime or grants.

Never happened with me or anyone I know, but I guess it happens. Only girls lived in dorms with shared bedrooms at the SEC school I went to (and they were FOUR to a room). I think frat guys may share bedrooms and maybe older unis.

Having a roommate isn't that bad man.

Just think about it, living in a dorm by yourself can be fun but you miss out on the social opportunities a roommate can bring.

What if your roommate is a football player? Or anything else that can provide value to your social team? You don't wanna miss out on that shit.

The few ways to cope with it is to:
1: Scout out your roommate before picking him.

Sometimes they'll give you the name of your roommate. Hop on Facebook and see how he is depending by the pictures. It sounds fucked up but trust me, that's one of the ways you'll be able to see if your roommate is chill or not.

2: Invite him to parties.

Take him out to parties. Why not? It helps y'all two get along and have stories about the bitches that evening. And you'd be surprised with what happens.

My roommate who usually doesn't go out, ended up pulling a sorority chick. +1 for the PokemonCenter.

3: If your roommate sucks that bad, request for a new one.

Straight up. My very first roommate was this omega Asian kid. Could talk forever about this guy but I ain't got a vagina. We didn't get along because I'd come home late while he was sleep on the weekends. Within a few weeks he left and I had the dorm to myself.

I'm not American but I have loved with roommates before, I have no problem sharing a house with a roommate, but a room? Can't fathom doing that, but like RioNomad said, maybe this applies more to 18 year old kids, not older guys.

I shared a dorm - and a house whilst at Uni. No problems with that.

But I would never share my bedroom.

Just wanted to mention that in case there is any confusion about what I am talking about.

Yea, that is pretty common, but mostly with freshmen. A lot of people move out of the dorms with friends they met after freshmen year and get a house or apartment.

what, you don't share bedrooms in the UK?

Then again, people in europe get paid to go to school, often get free healthcare, etc.

Sharing a bedroom at Uni is very unusual/non-existent. At least here in the UK.
