But what is mixed? Just because you aren't 100% pure something doesn't mean you are "mixed". If this is the case, then we should stop referring to blacks in America as "blacks" because almost all of us have 20-25% European mixture. But nobody looks at black Americans as mixed unless they have a non-black parent. If someone is 80-90% one group, they are considered that group. So if a Mexican is like 90% European and look indistinguishable from a southern European, then they are Europeans.

And as Teedub says, ANYWHERE outside the USA this is just considered common sense. Brazil has a much more realistic interpretation on race. They scratch their heads in disbelief when someone like Rashida Jones is considered "black" when she looks mostly European. Or that someone like Marco Rubio would be considered "non-white".

Speak, this thread has been derailed enough as it is. If someone is mixed and considers himself or herself mestizo, then they are technically right and there is no point arguing. Like I said, it is condescending to assume you know what they are better than they do.

At the end of the day, no matter how you slice and dice it, it looks like these concepts of "race", "ethnicity", or "heritage" are fluid ones whose boundaries and parameters shift from era to era and cannot be precisely defined. They seem to mean different things to different people. People seem to define themselves (with varying degrees of importance) by two things: genetic inheritance and cultural affiliation. How much weight is given to one factor, and how much weight is given to the other, will vary from person to person.

And that's why I think all attempts to impose strict categories on ethnic or racial types are ultimately unsatisfactory. Trying to do so is a relic of 19th century racialist thinking. Race and ethnicity are just too slippery to pin down.
It is a depressing legacy of America's northern European, Protestant cultural roots that there is such an obsession on race in the US. We should throw out all racial categories as fundamentally unworkable and illogical.
Some of it is just insanity. But it's done as a way of securing benefits, partly. I've seen people as white as any Scandinavian claiming to be "American Indian" and getting government benefits based on that.

To me, what is more important than "race" or "ethnicity" in defining someone is their cultural affiliation and their educational level. That's what really tells you more about a person. What environment did they grow up in, what languages do they speak, what were they exposed to, and have their minds been refined with education.

P.S. Speakeasy and Texas prophet are both right. Texas Prophet is a little more dead on. There's only two races in America, White or Non White. That's why America had the one drop rule it really does make everything more simple. Hispanic/Latino is not a race per se but is short hand to described someone whose too dark that hes not able classify themselves as White and takes offense to being grouped with Blacks. That's how Dominicans who are dark as coal can tell you with a straight face, "I am not Black, I am Hispanic."
