I go through them to find good articles that I usually send to my kindle using Readability.

• Longform - collection of popular magazine articles
• Instapaper - popular magazine articles (you must be signed in --- it's worth the effort)
• Arts & Letters - a little too focused on obscure books and arts, but worth a review
• NY Review Of Books - great book reviews that are packed with history and knowledge
• Longreads - similar to Longform, but not as good
• The Browser - similar to Longform
• Financial Times Life & Arts - good culture articles
• NY Times Magazine - once in a while I find something good here
• New Yorker - check their "most popular" list
• Aeon Magazine - a new arrival to my list, superb articles

Did I miss anything?

I'll second Longform and New Yorker, and I'll give a few of these other sites a look.

Long-form journalism is definitely my favorite method of learning about current affairs. Despite their length, I pay closer attention when reading these articles then I do to the half a page, 15 paragraph articles you find in most print newspapers.

Another one sort of in the same vein as The Browser is BookForum. It has a good selection of articles from magazines and scholarly journals, grouped by theme.

I swear by the Economist with their headline articles and longform journalism. I also tend to agree with their views as they seem very worldly there, not showing any bias for any particular country.

I get alot of good stuff from the marginal revolution blog. Is it updated about three times a day. And has alot of interesting content to do with economics (along with occasional pieces related to book reviews, politics, travel and current affairs).

The Economist used to be a great magazine but quality has dropped off in the last couple of years. I'll still read it from time to time, but I feel that a large number of people who read do so for pretentious reasons - they don't read it so much for the information inside it, but because they want people on the subway to notice that they are Economist, and clearly must be a highly learned scholar.

One thing that's great about Marginal Revolution is that it's comments are apparently unmoderated, yet they remain almost uniformly civil and intelligent. You'll have liberals and progressives, conservatives, libertarians, and yep, guys straight out of the manosphere commenting on there and it somehow never turns to shit.

Yeah - the Economist is a good magazine. But you need a couple of hours to read it properly. And it can be a bit dull - so I often find I only really get absorbed by the magazine when I don't have any other distractions (it is ideal for train journeys).

As for the readers being a bit pretentious. Absolutely right - they even based one of the most famous ever advertising campaigns around this idea. They did a series of billboards based on the idea of how smart Economist readers are.

Seems like if you have to tell your readers they're smart, it may not be the case in reality. I remember that Fox show "Mad About You" (which I couldn't stand) that advertised itself as "Smart comedy. Very smart". I didn't find that to be the case at all. I found it as mindless as any other sitcom on TV during that period in the 90's.

If you think the Economist isn't biased you are not reading what the Economist says. They are quite clearly biased in favor of Britain and the U.S. and admit as much. They are also of course biased against any country which doesn't have liberal economic policies.

I mean, they kept supporting the Iraq and Afghanistan wars for years and years, clearly shilling for the U.S. in those cases.

Yeah, there is no unbiased news source. The good thing about The Economist is that they are open with their biases.

They've even written about their biases on the blog section before. And they threw Obama on the cover for the 2012 race.

Besides The Economist I'm a big fan of Politico, Foreign Policy, and Foreign Affairs.

I've "liked" them all on Facebook and just read the interesting stories that pop up on my newsfeed. I like to try to read 3-4 a day, which only takes 20-minutes and provides a pretty solid base of knowledge.

The thing about The Economist is that on first glance it's a pretty good source of information and current events. However, when you start to read it more systematically (ie. almost every edition) its faults become readily apparent. I read a lot of their editions in a row to study for the GRE (they use a lot of GRE words) and I began to notice some things.

For one, it never actually goes into that much detail outside of the feature articles (and even then, it's not always that in depth). Everything is pretty cookie cutter and doesn't actually provide much depth at all. Articles are typically short, lack little editorial depth, and are really just basic facts + some different angles + a quip about neoliberal policies.

Secondly, you get a lot of the same topics regurgitated over and over again. For example, I was reading a lot of the editions that led up to the Brazilian election time. They probably did a piece of the election every 2nd or 3rd edition and it was basically the same shit repeated over and over again. I wouldn't mind this if they were covering a lot of other stuff, but they only really do 2-3 articles on Latin America every edition unless there is a feature article on the region.

Thirdly, you start to see basic trends where every article comes down to the same formula: elections + political leaders + basic geo/national politics + economics + technology all in the guise of neoliberal economic slant. There really isn't that much variety when it comes to looking at it from a broader perspective, and every article is slanted in the same direction. No, it's not necessarily a conservative/liberal dichotomy, but rather everything is about privatization, reducing bureaucracy, free market, or libertarian (not all these things are necessarily conservative-dominated viewpoints). It gets boring.

I don't know, I just think there are a lot of better resources out there but I do think The Economist can be a decent read for a flight or on a whim every once in a while. I wouldn't ever subscribe nor use it as a go-to resource however.
