Yet another mother obsessed with "ignoring" gender

The narcissist and her role-player:

I am assuming by "cool" you mean you will continue to love your child unconditionally, then yes. You *should* be doing that, anyway. You shouldn't need any praise or encouragement to be doing that, much less from your fucking child.

This woman is a clear, shining example of our narcissistic society. Now, she may not be a clinical narcissist or a compensatory narcissist in her relationship with her husband, but she sums up nicely how our society & the West socializes it's citizenry.

First, is the media confessional device. This mother comes to the media (authority figure) and begs for acceptance (worship). She "lays bare" her thoughts and feelings in the article and her blog. She starts with herself, then describes her perceived feelings about her son's "gender identity." She never steps back to observe the situation for what it is - she is forcing her son to assume an identity. Even the article itself flirts with that conclusion, as it states his room is "crammed full of girl's toys."

Second, is the fact her brother was gay. When that went down in the family, she wasn't worried about gay acceptance but a usurpation of her role as the star in her own movie. As any well-socialized narcissist picks up, being gay can bring loads of worship and attention into your life. She knows she can self-aggrandize with homosexuality. She may have experimented with a period of loud homosexuality in her youth - you know the type. However, she can't deny she isn't gay, so she needs to find another way to utilize homosexuality. An aging, white heterosexual woman in a marriage is very common and also not worshiped in society. However, she has a "blank slate" in her dependent child.

Her "non-gender" child represents what she could never be - a rebel. All that unused emotional energy she never expended developing real, stable identity is ported out onto her vulnerable son. He is a boy forced to become a girl, the definition of oppression.

The point of this whole situation is to call attention to gender and sexuality, not create a world where all can be free to be, or whatever. In another life, this same woman would have little trouble with forcing extremely rigid gender-based roles onto children. She is just a conduit for wider society - and that is how she wants it. She really doesn't want any stable identity for herself because that means becoming something. In a world where you can truly be anything.

Moral of the story: don't put it past an American woman to attention whore when and wherever she can.

More importantly, she passes the boner test.

All that gender crap is bad enough, but dragging your kid through the media with it?

Kid's gonna hate his mom by the time he's a teenager, if not before.

Women never grow out of the high school desire to be popular and liked. The driving forces behind these articles, and your typical Social Justice Warrior post, is simply about raising Social Status for the Writer:

1) The Writer is proving she is a special, unique snowflake for going against the norm. (I challenge you to find a POF profile without a humblebrag about how unique a girl thinks she is - usually paired with some godawful attempt at 'quirky' humour).

2) The Writer is more tolerant and caring of people's feelings than her readers.

3) The Writer is showing she is more enlightned, has a greater intelligence and is better educated than her readers. How could they not want to be her?

It's simply masturbating for social validation. I've yet to be convinced *all* female writing isn't basically this. Even something as stupid sounding as 'Twilight'.

Under all the vampire crap, Twilight is simply the story about a girl who thinks she's 'weird' and 'different', yet somehow instantly generates the absolute adoration of every boy and girl in school, gently rebuffing the advances of the boys she isn't interested in by setting them up with her friends because she cares about their feelings. The Highest Value Social Clique in the school is a group of beautiful vampires that the other kids can't penetrate, yet, the girl is immediately targetted by the best looking man in the clique, who constantly comments on how she is 'different' and 'special'. The most telling part: every other teenager in then school sees she is accepted into this clique, but she doesn't let it go to her head and become a bitch. She only uses her powers for good, like the Disney Princess she is.

Godawful. That's worse than forcing your kid to play a sport they don't want to just because you want to look good for them succeeding. It's almost like she's saying "Please please please be gay I want a gay son to show off!" Terrible parenting.

I had that exact same conversation with my mother when I was ten. Eight years of enforced therapy and medication ensued. It is indeed child abuse, and should not be tolerated in a civilised world. This woman is mentally ill, and her son has a long, hard road ahead of him. One day he may find this community, as I did, and will need our support.

As was said in a movie I hope has no parallel here: this isn't going to have a happy ending.
