^Because of the fear of lawsuits, many companies will only verify the period of employment and sometimes job title. Nothing more, nothing less. With that in mind, you can theoretically make up any reason, since it probably won't help your prospects to say you were fired. You may not even be asked about it, except on some generic form that they use to keep you in their database. Even then you say something very generic like, " job ended". To be safe contact the HR dept. to figure out exactly what they say when a prospective employer inquires about you.

Another thing worth adding is avoid locking yourself into things you cannot get out of quickly. A car lease, a mortgage and maintenance, and a marriage are all things you cannot escape from easily.

Not only are these things restrictive when you are gainfully employed, but they become an absolute noose when you're not bringing home the bank. To me, the people who are employed by organizations where you are most at risk of being fired are the same ones who locked themselves into a restrictive lifestyle.

Living the common American life is playing Russian Roulette. You absolutely must be living a flexible lifestyle OR able to provide satisfactory income via your own business. If you cannot say you're doing one of these things, then you are at risk.

At this point, being fired would be disastrous for me because I have been plowing my hard earned cash into the side hustle + real estate.

More than a vacay in the Caribbean, collecting unemployment, you need an income stream. I don't care if pits your online biz, real estate, whatever. Everyone needs be working on making $$s outside of regular employment. If you find yourself out of a job and have a side hustle, then it not cushions the blow but also provides new opportunities.

One of my boys got canned from his job and was able to get a second job as a real estate agent, plus build up his RE whole business all while he collecting 3 rents from his investment property in Southie.

If I were canned tomorrow, I would immediately pick up and move to Western Mass (lower cost of living), seek out some easy to find employment (security guard), while working on my side hustle. I'd definitely have to apply for jobs but wouldn't be in a rush.

Get a CELTA. It's one of the best insurance policies to get out of the country and make cash if necessary. You can be in Korea or ME making $3k+ a month in a matter of a few months...so you'd just need some savings to ride out that processing period.

That assumes you're mobile though, with no mortgage etc. and no desire or availability to land a gig in doing what you were already doing.

If you want to stay a corporate man...the best bet is a large, high quality personal network. Same day you're fired, hit up all your contacts and let them know that "it just didn't work out" at your last gig and that you're looking for opportunites.

All that said the irony is once you don't have to work for a living and can live off of passive income, you will have people knocking on your door to hire you all the time.

Fortunately, I work a 100% fully remote job with a company that 100% consists of men (we simply do not have any women on our payroll, which, let me tell you, makes the work environment a lot more pleasant). My experiences with women in the workplace have not been positive, especially in the technology field I work.

My experience is that the type of unattractive "feminist" women who I see in the tech industry make the workplace more toxic. As just one of many examples: I once worked in a contracting company where the company we were working for had this ugly woman who was a complete drama queen, bitching people out for making even the slightest mistakes filing bug reports.

In terms of the original question, if I got fired tomorrow, I would just have to hit up all the connections I have and hope something comes up. One of the big disadvantages of being a world traveler is that I wasn't building up connections while I was getting laid outside the US. And, being at a remote job doesn't help at all with making new connections. But, thankfully, I have enough money saved up I to survive a few months out of work.

In terms of making money with a blog or what not, it's really hard to do. Unless the ads are really really obnoxious, a blog will only generate about once cent of income per 10-20 unique visitors. So, to make a living -- $5000 per month before taxes -- a blog will need at least 100,000 unique visitors per month. That's tough to get, especially in today's internet where everyone is either on Twitter or Facebook and they do not venture much beyond those sites.

One of the best ways to avoid being fired/laid off and or hurt when that happens is to take on a trade or technical work. Anything technical/trades related: plumber, electrician, mechanic, carpenter, welder, you'd rarely if ever be in shortage of work, anywhere in the world. Or even better, spend a year or two in the energy sector/oil sands in Alberta for us Canucks, and for you Yanks, in North Dakota and build a solid trade related skill. In a lot of these trades, once you get a certain number of hours, you get to write an exam to get a ticket. Once you have at least one ticket, then you'd be golden. You could come and go anytime you'd want or whenever you'd want some quick cash injection. You'd have your own ticket, literally, to a high paying, highly in demand field around the world.

Unlike a regular corporate high paying job for which you'd have to spend years and tens if not 6 figures in tuition, a lot of these blue collar/technical trades courses are only a few weeks long and cost a fraction of what a degree+post grad degrees would entail.

I'm taking a one week pre-employment course, costing 1100 bucks, at the end of this month in a very technical field where most of the work is in the energy sector/oil sands but some also in transportation. That one week course will open the doors to get into an industry where once I have 320 hours of practical experience, which is going to take only 1.5-2 months in that line of work, and after taking and passing a federal exam, then I'd be making 6 figures GUARANTEED! That ticket is literally worth its weight in gold! And with that ticket, I can come and go as I please and will have no problem getting a new job in the same field getting paid very handsomely. And anywhere in the world where there is oil and or planes, trains, bridges, buildings and other metallic objects. So pretty much everywhere!

All of that for a one week long course! I wish someone had told me about that 10 years ago, I would have been retired by now.

So all of you young guys in here or even those in your late 20's or early 30's, or even older ones, if you are sick and tired of the corporate bullshit, underemployed or unemployed or with a heavy debt load, then I'd strongly recommend you consider the oil sands/oil and gas industry. Take a look at the monumental Monumental Oil Sands Thread that one of the legends of RVF, Scotian started. Go over that thread and see how many guys have had their lives changed there!

And the beauty of the work in the oilsands/oil and gas is that, unlike the BS filled and PC-feminist ridden corporate world, you're not stuck there for 50 out of 52 weeks per year. You can work seasonal if you want, while still banking your 80-120K+ in 5-6 months and take the rest of the year off to travel the world at your heart's desire. It can also be an excellent way to finance your plans, business ideas/ventures, living abroad, to pay off debt or for those not so adventurous, to finance your big ticket purchases, be them a nice car, a sweet home or simply money in the bank to give you the peace of mind that you may not get in the corporate world.

On top of that, when working in the oil sands, you don't have any expenses at all. If you work in camps, then your lodging and food will be provided by your employer. If not, then you'd receive a daily or monthly allowance for food/accommodation. So the only expense you'd have is what you'd spend on coffee, newspapers or booze on your week off.

Another mega advantage of the trades/oil sands is that it's a man's world, there you won't have to walk on egg shells in order not to offend some PC shlub or manginas, white knight betas or femicunts or faggots! None of that crap there, it's a man's world out there!

So guys, unless you're already retired with a couple of Mils in the bank, don't discard the oil sands/oil & gas industry. It's got tremendous and truly endless possibilities there. And for the young bucks who are hell bent on getting a degree or due to pressure from family to get a degree, then get a degree in petroleum engineering or something related to the oil & gas related like engineering, mechanics etc. Don't waste your time and money on some stupid and useless BA or psychology/criminology or as Scotian likes to say, in basket weaving or gender studies. My degree in international business has been hanging on my wall for over 7 years now and I have yet to use that sucker a single day so far and I doubt it'll be of any use to me in the future. Contrast that to that 1 week course! A one freaking week course! Absolutely incredible! If that worthless and overpriced college piece of paper is not a scam, then I don't know what is!

If this can help at least one guy in here from making the same mistakes I did when I was right out of high school/into Uni, or guide/show an older brother who might be currently either unemployed or underemployed or deeply in debt, that there's a way to make a very nice living doing something that's highly in demand worldwide, in here then I'd be the happiest guy around.

Are you sure about that? When I applied to my last job I gave a contact of someone I worked for, and they called him up and they gave him a short interview about who I was.

If I listed my old job that I got fired from, even if I list that I quit, they could call them up and they would say they fired me and probably make shit up about me.

Now what? I bring them to court? Sounds like a huge waste of my time and money.

Would it just be easier to leave a hole on my resume?

So are you telling me the future potential employer may not ask why you left a certain job during the interview process? You can sure lie your way out of it but god forbid you get caught in that lie and risk the new opportunity. Some federal gov't jobs in the US of A ask if you have ever been terminated or forced the resign to avoid termination. Lie there too? And like El Mechanico said, they may ask during the unemployment history check if they'll rehire you and if the answer is no then they'll really wonder what happened. Not. If they know I'm getting unemployment benefits it's either because I am laid-off or terminated.

There are generally two types of call that potential employers make. They may call your old job to verify that you actually worked there. And they call the people that you give them as personal and professional references. Obviously your references are going to talk about you. The other calls are mainly just to HR to verify that you actually worked there doing what you said you did.

Here a career hack. Start working contract, temp, or seasonal work. When the job is over you are automatically eligible for unemployment and there is where you get your extended vacation. Live lean and save the money while working. Then plan your trip out accordingly to what you saved up/unemployment.

Think of it this way WIA, getting a job is a lot like dating.

Your résumé is the equivalent of your profile on POF or OKC, the CV is the first message to the girl, and then finally the interview is like the first date.

Getting a job is all about selling yourself to the hiring manager and getting through the cockblocking HR drones. Once you get past them, you're gold.

Now, STEM people struggle getting jobs because they fail to see that the world doesn't operate on a meritocracy or worse they're unsure of their talents and how to sell oneself.

With my comparison above, how many letters do girls (hiring managers) get from thirsty dudes with zero game (stem applicants)? Enough that the first person who comes around with any modicum of game (social savviness) score the jobs.

What we're seeing now are typical "savvy" personalities landing the few jobs there are. In a time of plenty, everyone got a job. Nowadays, they are getting shut out because people go with their gut and want someone they can trust.

There are a ton of STEM jobs around. They just need to know how to find them. Programmers especially can easily land 85k+ jobs right out of college.

A person with game and talent is the equivalent of the one eyed man living in the kingdom of the blind. He is king.

At the end of it all too, no job is safe. But if you have skills that are valuable to someone you can find another one easily.

One thing I've realized in life is that no one wants to give you money, they'll only give it to
you if they NEED you to do something.

That includes, say, getting an X-ray.

Although a X-ray technician is a culture bound license,

There are tons of ancillary jobs that don't take years like becoming an RN, things you don't even hear much about like surgery assistants. They're not nurses, it's much easier to get into, they get the operating room ready for surgery and put everything in place.

Pharmacy technicians, that kind of stuff, most people are too stupid to go take a 6 month course.

I have a grad degree in the health care field (not an MD) and the unemployment rate in my field is less than 1%, but I had to bust ass and eat shit for years from supervisors who had to sign off that I was good.

An employer CAN say what they want. But it's not worth the hassle. If they put you on blast, you could potentially sue them.

Well run companies do not do anything outside of confirming dates of employment.
