RE: Should I switch to Mac?
"The virus thing happens when someone opens stuff on emails or downloads stuff from games."

I was recently hit at work merely from VISITING a site - survivorsucks.com. Didn't download anything - nada - and it completely took control of my machine and tried to "blackmail me" (we can fix this problem for you!) We had anti-virus, firewalls, etc. (we're a tech company) and it still took the most savvy tech guy most of a day to get things back in order.

Yeah, taking off the SSD and Monitor would save him a bunch of cash. Good PCs are going nowadays for cheap.

Have you tried AVG? I use AVG+Malwarebytes, VLC to play movies and the USB version of CC. Avast was too spammy for me.

AVG works just as well. I think the paid version of Avast is less spammy. It is annoying, but it warns before you hit a site that might be bad, like the one StudebacherHoch mentioned.

Emech should be able to get a full rig including monitor for $800 or less. Anything is an upgrade from what he's using now. He can avoid a lot of wiring mess by going wireless keyboard, mouse, printer/fax, ect.

Suprised nobody has told e-mech to get a strong anti-virus/adblocker/ no script add-on/ etc....

Edit- 2nd page somebody said something..., but def. get adblocker and no-script addon/grease monkey

2nd edit- credit card terminal should be separate from the computer imo...

You have to learn a little about computers or that will happen. Just like going to a shade tree mechanic. I hate these little small town computer guys cause they'll keep fucking your shit up for repeat biz. I used to go into gun stores trolling like I didn't know anything and it is amazing what they'll try to sell you.

Don't go all in one, but keep everything wireless to keep the clutter down. You don't need a Mac. The business world stays with PC's for a reason. It's mainstream and will work better with what you do.

That's my next setup since I already have a big monitor, keyboard and mouse.

Wait until the Sept 10th announcement though they're going to probably announce the new ones with the new Haswell processors.

El Mech, you need to take your car testing to the computer world. Start testing out different types of computers and see what women notice.

What about using a Square terminal? They're easy to use, works on android and iphones. Prices are not that high, I think they're giving the terminal for free.

Also, mac minis are a good choice. They're small and portable. Just make sure you get a good monitor ($125-150) to compliment it.

Dell 23-inches for $169, 21-inches for $129.99

Wireless mouse for $70. Best mouse ever. It works on every surface.

There's a smaller version of the same mouse for 39.99

Keyboard, $25 bucks

Keyboard/touchpad combo for $30.

If you're planning on doing high-end animation or special effects for a movie - then get a mac.

For probably, 99.9999999% of the population, having a Mac is a veiled brag.

RE: Should I switch to Mac?
You don't need a supercomputer to do Wordpress. Any will do. I think macs are simpler to use for the everyday person. You'll figure it out pretty quick. I was in your position like 10 years ago. I just went to Mac store and played with the laptops as much as I could. I ended up buying a brand new PowerBook G4 at the time for $2700. It was the top of the line. I still use it. Mostly for light web surfing and hacking wifi passwords Wink

Just take the plunge and buy one. You'll like it.

If you want the cheap pc hardware with the Mac OS you can look into buying or building your own Hackintosh. Not a task for the faint of heart but a good money saver.

I saw that 27 at the Peach store at the mall the smaller one was 1299 is that about right?

Yes, that is correct. If 21.5" is more suitable to your office space, then just get that. It's just that the screen is fixed, so if you ever think you need more screen, get the bigger model now. http://store.apple.com/us/configure/MD093LL/A?

Guys have to look at things from em's perspective. He does not want to fuck around with shit at all. Price is not an issue, so cost arguments are irrelevant. I have both Mac & PC. Less things go screwy with a Mac. Shit generally does work. em, just get it and see how you like using it...I think you can return within 14 days no questions asked.
Why would someone need more screen?

It's more fun to watch movies on big screen and it's easier to do multiple things without moving windows around. You could keep your accounting stuff open and watch cat videos on the same screen.

More screen space is addictive, no matter how much you get you want more, but if you get the 27 you won't be jonesing as soon.

If you want a computer that is dependable and has great customer service, and are willing to sacrifice some (potential) computing power despite paying a premium, look no further than an apple product.

If you want a computer that requires (often significant) dicking around, compatibility issues, general maintenance, and lost time, but is always cheaper to get a more powerful unit or upgrade and it would be easier to find nerds to fix it for you, get a desktop running windows.

I'd consider the potential time you would save using a mac to be worth the money.
Edit: Just get a mouse that doesn't suck. Apple's peripherals are awful.

get the 27 iMac. everything's simple (will work together) and you get a humongo resolution monitor that would cost over a thousand if you got it separate/

RE: Should I switch to Mac?
^^ Not really. They cost around $500.

And yeah, if you buy a good antivirus like ESET, you'll have no problem.

I would rather get 2 monitors than 1 big one. A lot more space to work with.

Also, SSD is not optional. It significantly decreases load times and makes everything smooth and fluid.

And most people that get a MAC don't actually video edit or edit music. Besides, you can encode videos a lot faster with a fast PC.

You can always get Hackintosh set up on your PC so you'll have MAC OS. Again, you can get some techie to do it.

The cool thing is when in a few years down the line you want to throw in an upgrade, it'll be easy as pie.
