Miley Cyrus IS feminism. She is the living embodiment of a girl who has lived her entire life without any kind of boundaries. She is free to do whatever she wants.

And apparently all she wants is to act like a complete whore.

That entire performance was tragically embarrassing, not only for her but for our culture. Is this really what we've become? Is this the best we can do? Is this the culture we deserve? Her performance did not even involve the slightest pretense of artistic expression. It was pure trash from start to end. Terrible singing. No choreographed dancing, just a bunch of improvised pelvis thrusts and twerks. I'm not even exaggerating when I say that I've seen higher artistic sentiment expressed in a pole dance. This is why the female nature must be, and historically has always been kept in check through strict social norms and laws. The ancients understood that letting women run wild would result in spectacles like this and would drag the entire society into the gutter.

The most horrifying thing is that millions of girls look up to her as a role model. And we've allowed this to happen. We've allowed complete trash like this to pervade our culture and poison the minds of vulnerable young people whose thoughts and opinions can be easily swayed by the images they see portrayed in mass media. In a healthy American society, this girl's career would be over after a stunt like that. Every right-thinking person would be utterly appalled by it, and would refuse to associate with her whatsoever due to the power of social shame. Instead, she is now "trending" as a hot topic, and her career prospects will only be enhanced, because in our degenerate society, the only thing that matters is fame itself, not the method by which you acquired the fame.

This cannot continue, and it will not, one way or another. We are currently living through "peak feminism". It's a conflagration with an inherently limited lifespan, because eventually it gets so out of control it burns up everything in its path and is left with no more fuel to sustain itself. The only question is whether today's peak feminism will be replaced by a return to traditional American culture that limits women mostly through the power of social norms and shaming, or if the modern American feminist, so drunk off power and emboldened with her unlimited sexual freedom is ironically setting the stage for her granddaughters to be bound by the strict chains of Islamic Sharia Law. For all the numerous faults of Muslim culture, it at least has no qualms about keeping its women in check, which is the single reason it continues to spread unabated while the West declines, morally, demographically and by pretty much every other metric you can measure by.

Well, that's not entirely true. The only problems I have is the fact that she is ugly and a shitty dancer and doesn't know how to be a classy whore.

If she was hot and sexy and knew how to dance and perform, most guys would not have a problem.

The problem is that she is not sexy.

Sexy women do not scare men. Un-sexy women scare us.

Sticking your tongue out like the lead singer of a death metal band is not sexy for a woman. Being a shitty dancer is not sexy.

If she was sexy, we would be applauding her. She is ugly, hence the negative reaction.

When you look at the performances of Madonna, Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, etc.. it's true that they are usually highly sexualized, but there is still at least the attempt (if often the failure) to express some kind of artistic sentiment. I think the difference here is that Miley Cyrus did not even make the effort to do that. She didn't feel the need. She literally saw nothing wrong with simply walking up on stage almost naked, singing off key and waving her pussy and ass around for the camera. That was it. There was nothing else. That's why this was the ultimate feminist performance: it consisted of nothing but a young woman who is so completely in love with herself that she doesn't even feel the need to entertain the crowd, but merely present herself for their approval.

And I think that's what bothers people about this: her utter shamelessness. It's not just her in-your-face, over the top sexuality people found offensive, but the fact that she didn't even bother to provide anything else along with it. The sheer laziness and arrogance of it is worse than the overt sexual content. Lady Gaga also danced around almost naked, but did so within the confines of her particular artistic milieu, so the performance at least had some rationale behind it. Miley Cyrus basically has no comprehension of how to utilize her sexuality for artistic expression. She looks at Lady Gaga and sees nothing beyond the fact that she's dancing around in her underwear. The underlying artistry is lost on her. So she clumsily attempts to replicate it by aping only what she sees. This is the result.

She thinks she is being edgy and sexy, but in reality she is just making herself look like a complete idiot and a trainwreck, and is making everyone associated with her look bad as well. She is the personification of the female id raging out of control, getting everything it wants and destroying itself in the process.

Gio we've always sexualized female performers, you're correct. But as Scorpion points out, there's always been an element of class, talent, and integrity behind it. There's been a steady decline in the culture of mainstream American music since the 60s when the sexual revolution occurred. It kept getting edgier and edgier every decade...really catching on in the 80s with Joan Jett and Madonna. Alanis Morisette and Fiona Apple in the 90s, and then Britney hitting the scene...

The reassuring part of the Miley Cyrus incident is the seeming unanimously horrified reaction to it.

Miley's life has been one of complete and utterly repressive boundaries. She has been marketed, promoted and molded since she was a child. She never had a true childhood and she is acting out what she never could as a child.

This isn't about feminism at all, it is about a girlhood never lived. She is acting out in a childish way in order to garner attention, in whatever form it comes. Yes, loosened sexual mores has allowed her to act in this fashion, but feminism has just altered the medium by which expresses herself.
