No. You're committing a sampling bias: the Greek and Roman high art you see is the shit that survived two plus millennia since the fall of their cultures, which is going to be the timeless "high" art from the period. Likewise Renaissance paintings and great symphonies. You can't hold up the greatest artistic achievements from entire cultural epochs to support the proposition that the cultures themselves were healthier than ours. Rome had its share of toilet graffiti; Mozart wrote a song designed to sound as if the soloist was demanding a rim job. Lady Gaga's nude videos will not survive the century. The Vietnam Memorial, Coltrane, and Mt. Rushmore will.
