A friend of mine who lives in New York told me about some bars he likes to visit that are "speakeasies". That is, they are unmarked from the outside so you would not know they are there if you walked by casually. Kind of a 1920s throwback. I thought this sounds rather fun…which have you visited and what's your opinion of them?

Fantastic drinks by some very skilled bartenders.

Absolutely horrible for picking up chicks. Everyone are here in pairs and for the place. People don't go here to meet other people.

Agree with Vicious on the chicks.

When I want to just hang with the guys the underground strip clubs are awesome. No pressure, friendly girls, good atmosphere. I think it is the future of guys night.

Yeah, Milk & Honey actually has a policy that prevents hitting on women. Nonetheless, these can be great in impressing a date.

Agreed, these places are great for dates (good ambiance, you don't have to worry about some other cat trying to swoop your date, makes it look like you know the scene even if you just found it on Yelp, etc.), but suck for pickup.

Holy fuck! I just looked that up. One of their bar rules is actually, "Gentleman may not introduce themselves to ladies." Women can talk to men or ask the bartender for an introduction, but men cannot initiate anything. That is some of the gayest shit I've ever heard.

I would never even go to a speakeasy looking to mack, but the fact that it's a rule is so juvenile. Based on that rule alone, I'd never patronize that place.

I was about to say "what about Chumley's" as it was an original speakeasy from back in the days of prohibition...then I read it closed down, bummer.

I left NYC in 2007 so shows how dated my NYC knowledge is getting...but soon to be rebuilt?

If you like tequila and mezcal I recommend Mayahuel on 6th between 1st and 2nd Aves. Excellet tequila old fashioneds and very boozy drinks.

milk & honey moved uptown and closed the LES location. no reason to go back there now that Max Fish is closed. yay suburban white kids.

Actually, it says "Gentlemen will not introduce themselves to ladies." Seems like you can hit on the chicks all you want, but can't tell them your name. Of course, if you're not a gentleman, the rule doesn't even apply to you, does it?

Max Fish isn't closed. It's still open, and just as trashy as it's always been.
