NYT piece "Why Men Need Women
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/07/21/opinio...h_20130721
You can get an idea of the content of the piece from my comment:
"Poor headline. The gist of the article is that women make men more generous; this is clearly good for the people surrounding the men, less clearly good for the men themselves. A better headline might have been, "Why society needs men to work on behalf of others rather than themselves, and why women are good at making that happen." It's like titling an article on how men pressure women to lose weight, dress femininely, and learn to cook "why women need men."
Headline aside, the author seems to value the ability to spend someone else's money more than the ability to earn that money in the first place. He cites research showing that men are more likely to help women than other men, but no research showing who if anyone women are likely to help. And, writing in a great newspaper founded by men, on computers designed by men, using software written by men, he has the nerve to conclude that men add "not much" of value to society.
Do men have any worth in themselves, as subjects, or are we valuable only as objects, as workhorses and walking wallets whose value is dependent on our utility to others, that is, women?"

RE: NYT piece "Why Men Need Women
Another thinly-veiled hit piece on masculinity. Yeah, we get it by now: men are worthless, deadbeat psychopaths without the angelic and benevolent influence of women. Women are the true human beings created in the image of God, men are Satanic beasts who thirst for the taste of human blood.
Enough already. I really wonder, do the men who write this shit actually believe it, or are they just doing it for career reasons?
I find it hilarious that men are vilified because they need women to make them more generous with their wealth, yet there is no mention of the fact that it was men who put in the hard work and innovation to accumulate the wealth in the first place. That's basically ignoring the core feature of masculinity and then declaring masculinity worthless. I wonder how much value to society women would have if you threw out their ability to have children?
The work and effort of men apparently has no social value until the capital derived from that work is spent by women. Think about how fucking stupid that is for a second, then realize that's the idea being featured in the newspaper of record in an article by a professor at the best business school in the country.
And then wonder no more why Western civilization, entirely conceived, built and maintained by men, continues its nosedive.
"For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.” - Romans 8:18

I've also read that studies show married men live longer, usually due to health reasons (less potential to party and more likely to take care of themselves, etc). No matter what your views on marriage, it rings true to me.
Or the man could just make a bit of money in a business that pretty much runs itself, and live happily in Thailand with a plethora of concubines.
That would make the man 91029103921049 Times more happy successful etc as a married man.
That article title should read " Why men need to go to Thailand"

Yes, but I'll reiterate that he would likely die sooner as well. It's a hard fact of living here. You live well but fast.
Again, I didn't read the article, so I'm not commenting on that specifically. Just in case of confusion.

I keep hearing that married men are happier and live longer, but correlation does not imply causality. Perhaps the kind of men who are generally happier and live longer are also more likely to get married and then stay married.
In any case, I would rather die sooner having lived an interesting life full of adventures.
Fair enough. I also thought about correlation and causation after I wrote my post earlier. But if you put logic into it does make sense that a man with more responsibilities and a family to keep him focused, as well as a dash of feminine energy helping round out his edges, would lead to conditions that create better health and success. You can have both, but one is more likely, in my opinion.
In any event, I could get married tomorrow and would have already lived a more interesting life than 95% of the population. So I do think you can do both. I'm living in Southeast Asia but will probably eventually lock down one of these women, sometime within the next 5-10 years, and knock her up. Then set her up her at home taking care of the house and the kids while I go on with my interesting life.
To each his own, no doubt.

There is a woman(!) who has written a book and devotes alot of her columns to debunking myths surrounding the benefits of being married.
http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/living-single
And here is a column by her debunking the myth that married people live longer:
http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/livi...ive-longer
I am not bothered by such stats since the differences are small anyway.
And besides - I think in the modern world - most people are living such long lives that they are now trading quality for quantity.

Life-long bachelors live longer, healthier lives than divorced men. And if you get married, even controlling for factors like income, similar religious or non-religious views, educational achievement, similar socioeconomic background, you still have a 46 percent chance of getting divorced. And of the people who stay together, how many of those are happy, fulfilling marriages and not loveless roommate-type situations?
Both sexes want sex and emotional companionship, but men are more likely to want to pursue short-term casual flings. If you could find a woman that is long-term relationship material, then absolutely marriage is worth pursuing and you are likelier to be happier than on your own. But those women tend to already be married. There are women that are only good for fucking and there are (a precious few) women that are worth building a life with, but the most miserable men you will ever see are the ones that get the two mixed up.
There was a time when marriage was a low-risk, high-reward proposition for a man. Those days are over.
