I will add one more that hasn't been posted...Inversion

I have a long upper body and have had back problems on and off all my life. For me all the things mentioned above (stretching, core strength, yoga) coupled with regular inversion has kept me pain free for years. It's actually helped relieve knee, pain too.

If you think about it gravity compresses your body consistently in one direction 24/7. Inversion is the ONLY time you actually have gravity decompressing your body.

I can hang for five minutes and feel the release in my back, hips, knees and ankles.

Of course I wouldn't do anything unless a professional okays it, especially if youre injured. But I do think inversion is a fantastic preventive and one more people should do. It's been awesome for me. Ive usedthe boots / bar system for 20 years.
