Hey guys just a simple question. If you were to travel abroad for some months and you rent where you live, what do you do with the rent? you just keep paying those months that you aren't at home? any tips on how to overcome this? ( besides owning of course)

The obvious answer would be to put everything in storage and move out. You can use rent money to "rent" where you are at the moment. Do you have a lease? Can you even get out? Subleasing is a better option but it may not be doable.
Airbnb your place for a month...and travel while you have someone living there.

depends where you live. if its a decent size city i'd try and sublet it as furnished on craigslist or somewhere. there's a decent chance someone would like the flexibility of a short term lease and a furnished apartment, like someone who is moving into the city and wants to get their feet on the ground before entering a longer term arangement.

For the amount of rent I'm paying in the NYC area, I could fucking live and have a blast in a country like Thailand or the Philippines. I would consider 2 options if I was going abroad for a few months:
1. Sub-let, if the landlord is ok with it.
2. Put my stuff in storage and move out.

The problem with the 2nd option is that when you come back, it's very hard to find suitable temporary apartments in this area unless you pay through the nose, like $150+/day or more. I don't like living with roommates so my options are limited even for long term rental. If I rented in a smaller city, I would go for Option 2 and then, on return, stay at Extended Stay America or something similar for a couple of months while looking for a new long term apartment.
