I've been reading a few financial books recently that I've had recommended to me by mates. Most books I read these days are recommendations.

I thought it'd be a good idea to have a thread for guys to do likewise on here, since there's a lot more people on here than I know in person.

The only condition is that it has to be something that will make you grow, gain knowledge or help you in a new pursuit (e.g. investing, working out).

If you want some suggestions for a book to read on a particular topic, post it in here and I'm sure there'll be plenty of guys who can suggest a few. Or if you've recently read a good book that's helped you in some way, write a little bit about it in here for others to hear about.


I'm trying to soak up as much knowledge in regards to investing and trading stocks and shares at the moment. So if anyone has any recommendations for me that you found useful, let me know.

I recently read The Motley Fool Investment Guide which has really opened my eyes in how to invest your money long term, how different funds work, what to look out for when you're investing and why bank savings accounts are useless.

They give you some great tips on how to get started in investing your money and provide all their knowledge from experience on what type of people to avoid and how you can actually make money investing on your own without fund managers and whatnot.

It's a "anyone can do it" kind of book and there's no financial jargon that bankers like to throw around in it which really appealed to me. I need things like this spelled out basically and that's what they did.

I'm currently reading a book called The Naked Trader. It's a similar book but obviously more geared towards trading. Same again, it's broken down very simply for anyone who wants to get into trading without jargon and I understand the financial markets a whole lot better than I did before.

I genuinely believe this book will help change my life. It's that good, and I'm only on chapter 8.

The Centurion Method, Jack Donovan recommended it through his site and it's a great book to read after The Way of Men. The first half is all theory talking about our ancestors and evolution much in line with Jack's views and the second half is all workouts. You can get on amazon for like ten dollars there is no ebook format.

Matt, would you say that the "motley fool investing guide" is a good place to start learning about investing and such from scratch? I'm a total rookie in that regard, (my family members barely has savings as they like to spend frivolously and poorly) but I've got close to 10k stuffed in my room I'd like to try doing something with. If it isn't, what would be a good guide to start learning with? Or any book really that would help me to do something with my stash that would be more productive then putting it into a bank account and watching it go up 1% a year haha.
Sorry gentlemen I have nothing new and ground-breaking to contribute right now. I'm about half way through "The Red Queen" though, but I see that mentioned a lot here so I'm sure it's old news. It's a very good look into the biology of sexuality and the history of why people are attracted to what they are in case anyone lurking hasn't heard of it.
Staros, that book sounds really good I just ordered it on amazon thanks. Should get here right around when I'm wrapping up Red Queen
NYC, looking at that centurion method next unless something else really catches my eye before I wrap up "think and grow rich"

I just read "Walking The Amazon", which is a non-fictional account of a guy walking from the Pacific Ocean in Peru, over the Andes and through the entire Amazon, into the Atlantic Ocean. Super inspiring book, but I read it mostly because I'm dipping into the Amazon after my Rio trek. Highly recommended if jungles, or trekking is your thing.

Absolutely mate. One of my best friends recommended it to me and he said it's one of the books that changed his life. It really is a "investment for dummies" kind of book. I've found it extremely useful getting to understand terminology and how accounts and shares work.

Reminiscence of a stock operator by edwin lefevre.

Level 3:

Fire your stock analyst by harry domash

you can be a stock market genius by joel greenblatt (silly title, brilliant book)

Options made easy by Guy Cohen

The Bible of Options strategies by Guy Cohen

Level 3b:

for technical analysis: Getting started in technical analysis by jack schwager; Encyclopedia of chart patterns by Thomas Bulkowski; candlesticks by steven nison.

Level 4:

Handbook of Fixed Income securities by Frank J. Fabozzi

Options, Futures, and Other derivatives by John C Hull.

I'm proposing a format for this thread that I think would help with organization and better recommendations.

Someone does a short post in terms of asking for genre, style, etc. they are looking for:

- historical fiction similar to 300
- philosophy for beginners
- space based science fiction
- Biography of a world leader

You get the point...

Then just reply quoting the original post with the book, and relevant Amazon link (to order, read summary, or check reviews)

What do you guys think?

1) Wealth of Nations by Adam Smith? I'm not sure if it's history because I have never read it but heard good things from economic majors. Interesting read but a little dry.

2) Art of Power by Jon Meacham (Thomas Jefferson's bio)

Lion in the White House by Jon Meacham (Andrew Jackson's bio)

Mein Kampf by Adolf Hitler (Extremely underrated IMO. I'm not finished with it yet but that poor fucker had to endure so much to get where he did. He was an orphan, failed art student turned political activist.)

Both these books relevant to today's issues, first is an easy read, 2nd is a lot more academic and quantitative, but you can always just skim sections too:

Also, similar to Data Sheets, try first to stick to book recommendations you have actually read.

If that's not the case, and you know a friend or someone who provides solid recommendations, clarify that you haven't read it, and why it would still be a good recommendation based on what you've been told.

Okay I have a request that may be a bit tougher.

Looking for anything that summarizes, contrasts, and analyzes, the concept of "Adventure"

Could be something like "The 48 laws of Power" but for stories of adventure

And if no one has any ideas, even a collection of great real life adventure stories would be good, similar to the above.

I know there's a lot of "Survival books" but not really leaning towards that...
