Golf legend Gary Player slams U.S. obesity epidemic: 'They live on crap'

Golf legend Gary Player looks and feels younger than his 77 years, thanks to his lifelong dedication to healthy eating and daily workouts. Player says he posed nude in the 2013 ESPN Body Issue to inspire others to embrace an active, healthy lifestyle.

"I love America, but I get so upset at the obesity," Player told ESPN July 9. "I just don’t see how [the healthcare system] can work with this tsunami of obesity.”

The South African golf pro is concerned because he has 15 American grandchildren who are growing up at a time when 32 percent of the U.S. population is clinically obese.

“America is maybe the most unhealthy nation in the world because they live on cr*p,” said Player. “They’ve got the best food in the world, the best farmers and the best food, but they live on cr*p."

Player, who follows a 70-percent vegetarian diet, does 1,200 situps a day, walks a lot, does manual labor on his ranch in South Africa and plays golf. He's active every day, even if it's not at a gym. As a result, Player feels decades younger than his chronological age.

"I have unbelievable energy for 77," he gushed. "I still work on my ranch. I help the staff mix cement, I help them carry poles. I have the energy of an average 45-year-old."

While Player raised eyebrows for posing nude in the 2013 ESPN Body Issue, he says he wanted to send the message that aging doesn't mean getting weak and sick.

“If I can encourage young people to look after their body and take an interest in fitness and diet-wise, I will have achieved something greater than 18 major championships,” he said.

"Posing in the magazine is just part of my plan. My big dream now is to help people become healthy. Obesity, as far as I'm concerned, is the greatest problem facing the planet at the moment."

What a stallion! Consider me inspired.

My pants are already hanging off my ass due to losing quite a bit of fat lately - but mostly through eating better. Have been working out a little jsut to get in the habit but nothing big.

1200 situps a day. That sounds more like it...

I was talking to a concreter at the gym the other day, good looking spanish guy with an accent, i thought he would have been around 45, he was 71. been working outdoors concreting his whole life still on the tools still works as hard as a 20 year old. He looked better than your average 35 year old office worker. I always remember these types of things, like the guy above; inspiring, never stop training and being healthy.

South African guys tend to have this kind of personality. I've never met a South African guy middle aged or older who wasn't a no bullshit, very masculine, hardworking, in shape guy.
