With marriages declining and divorce rates skyrocketing soon we will see the booming of a new type of home for the 21st Century Man: The bachelor pods or Man Caves.

The very concept of the bachelor–the independent living single man–is a fairly new one. In fact, up until the 1600s, there wasn’t even a name for young, single men, and they were generally lumped into the same category with women, children and servants. Today, guys are apt to be bachelors for longer than at any other period in our nation’s history.

A man cave, sometimes a manland, mantuary or manspace, is a male sanctuary, such as a specially equipped garage, spare bedroom, media room, den,or basement. It is not a cave but rather a metaphor. Paula Aymer of Tufts University calls it the "last bastion of masculinity".

Man caves have multiple purposes: they're a place to be alone, to be away from women and from female sensibilities, to indulge in hobbies, and to hang out with male friends. It is, loosely, a male-only space to retreat to, Man Caves, watch sports matches, or play video games.

Man Caves is an exploration of cool spaces guys have created for themselves: everything from living rooms and bedrooms, offices and workshops, and media and game rooms, to garages, outdoor grilling areas, gardens and more. The fact that the men is finding his own space without the need of women seems to annoy feminists, that are using anti-male shaming tactics against these bachelor pods:

I've always had much respect for man caves.

I remember when I was in college I used to roll by this guy's pad all the time. About 50 or so and married, and he had a corvette parked in the driveway, though a pretty humble home for America, and his garage door was always open. Inside he had a couple couches and a TV and him and a buddy were always sitting in there drinking a beer. Sometimes I'd even catch glimpses of his wife standing at the door into the house flapping at him.

I always said he was the shit. My girlfriend at the time didn't quite share the sentiment; I suppose it revealed too much of our possible future together...though it didn't stop her from shooting for children.

Doesn't matter what your social standing, you need a place to escape from your wife. Even better if it's a place where you don't have to pay bar prices for a drink.

A very good point, but you're also single. Even in the era when women as a rule were stay-at-home mom's, they tended to rule the roost and do the decorating, mood-setting, etc. Men didn't dominate the home with their own personality as they spent very little time there.

For bachelors and guys with girlfriends, your reasoning makes sense, but if raising a family, you can't really dominate the entire household with your manliness. You can to an extent, but it's still nice to have a private domain where anything goes. Shaven spreads on the wall, movies and discussion inappropriate for children, etc.

It's just a bunch of weights, a dip station, a chinup bar, and some kettlebells scattered around with an old Dreamcast hooked up to a shit TV in the corner.

This is not carving out a special room in a feminized house. This will be the whole appartment, the home of the future for bachelors in the 21st century. A mixture of a loft / garage / workshop. The number of families is decreasing, while the number of single men and MGTOW is increasing, and so they are the man caves.

Have you seen the average middle-aged married American male? He wears New Balance shoes with cargo shorts, and exposed undershirts with suits. Giving him license to make his own room is frightening. At least an American woman will outsource the design to some interior decorator.

I agree with Roosh. I think it was Matt Forney who said "If you have to have a room called a 'man cave', you're a serf on your own land".

To me, the concept of a "cave" just plays into the feminist, SWPL bullcrap that men are cave dwelling and retarded, while they are intelligent and "evolved". When I carve out a room for my own use, it is an office or library or den.

When people ask me if I have a "man cave", I usually look at them like a lion that is about to bite their head off. Then I politely explain that anything I'm paying for is my land. Even though going through a divorce, I'm renting a basement, it is still entirely my dwelling. And it is not a cave.

I was going to post something along these lines. I've got married friends with man caves. As cool as they are, I still shake my head. All of their "caves" are either in the garage or converted garages. It's as if masculinity must be banished from the main homestead because it's too offensive or something.

My "man cave" is my living room. I can sit there for hours, by myself, in silence, and be utterly happy. I've got a great sound system that's over 20 years old. I've got two bookshelves; one for cookbooks and others with classics by James Joyce, Bukowski, Hunter Thompson, and Vonnegut. There's a single painting on the wall; a Van Gogh print. There's persian rugs on the floor, a wood coffee table with a single orchid on it, and a bunch of family heirlooms from Turkey and Bulgaria. Ron Burgundy ain't got shit on me. There's 5 guitars stacked up, one of them a 1970 green hollow body Orlando that's plugged into my amp that's big enough to piss off neighbors 3 blocks away. There's a wine rack with a constantly revolving selection of obscure red wines and a cabinet with bar supplies and high end tequila, rum, cognac and liqueurs. In that same cabinet there's a few crumbs of cocaine, another nearly spent baggy of molly, and about an eighth of ground up weed and some rolling papers. There's no T.V.

Those mancave pictures are tacky for sure, but those are the "lucky" guys. Most mancave's are pathetic. A lot of guys don't even get a room of their own. They either get the basement or the attic or if their wife is a real bitch all they get is the garage. It's pathetic.

They say, "Yeah man, check out my basement/attic/garage, I got a couch and a tv and I got a little fridge and I'm gonna build a bar..." it's like being in high school again.

I helped one married buddy put a toilet in his basement because his wife doesn't want him to take a shit in their bathroom anymore. She banned him from his own toilet, in a house he owned before he ever even met the bitch and now he's relegated to taking a shit in the open corner of a dark, wet, unfinished basement 365 days a year while she's got the rest of his house all decorated like Martha Stewart.

thedude's place sounds bad-ass for sure, but something tells me he'd change it up if he had a wife and kids running around, no matter how strong his frame.
