That's a weird one, but maybe it wasn't a scam. In Chinese, the equivalent of "What's up?" is "Chi le ma?" (Have you eaten?) so maybe their intentions were genuine.

Given how cheap a meal is there, I'd say roll the dice and take someone up on it next time it happens. Worst case you're out $10.

In Hungary there is a scam that looks like this wtf incident. Basically, two really hot girls stop you at the street, they're all over you, they take you to a bar and order drinks, you don't suspect anything because they're so hot, the bill arrives and it's astronomical, and some really nasty guys are there to collect, the girls are nowhere to be found.

This looks like the Hungary scam, except the girls aren't that hot (but their broken English may compensate) and it's not a target-rich environment (not that many foreigners). Yes, I agree, next time I'd take them up on it, but risks are way higher than just 10$, and given the deeply buried hatred for non-Chinese in China, it may include bodily harm, so I'll be extra careful.

Nothing to report, it's been a slow week.

A really unfortunate looking girl chatted me up on the subway, just to practice her english, which was excellent. However, she did not pass the boner test, so no go.

Mapped in some expat bars, but had no time to go there...

Found out that Chinese girls (and Chinese in general) have a lot to look up to in foreign men... they seem to lack abstract thought (most can't read maps) and emotional depth, I guess both a consequence of rote learning and too strict environment. Starting to feel a bit superior to them, so confidence level rising.

I have a hell of a work week ahead of me, don't think I'll get any game practice. Also, definitely need to get some basic Chinese, english speaking girls are too few.

If you're new in town and don't have much of a social circle, it may be worth it to stay in touch with the ugly ones just to build your network of contacts. Who knows if she has cute friends. When I was new in a country a few years ago, I basically exchanged contact info with every person I met just to build my network. It was also surprising which of those paid off via their friends, and many times over.

My experience in China is that Chinese girls have this child-like view of romance and love. Think 1950s or something, and act accordingly.

Speaking the language is definitely important in China. My advice would be to focus just on speaking (so forget the characters and just do Pinyin), and deal with reading/writing later. You'll eventually learn characters, and you can get apps to read characters for you when you're in a bind out on the street and can't read a sign (I use Pleco). Note that many Chinese teachers will disagree with this advice (to ignore the characters), but I think the method depends on if you just want to speak or if reading/writing is more important.

@Chrysalis- Bro, you are going wayy too far into "game" for China.

This is easy, say hi, chat a little about how you just moved here recently and are working here....ask for #, go on date and get a few drinks/food. Just keep the interaction moving forward and if you make a social faux pas, just blame it on being foreigner.

A smile and a joke will work better than "aloof and charming".

Imagine that you are a BARBARIAN GIANT entering a village, because essentially thats what you are. Show some tact, keep it quiet in public in front of her friends, get her #, and take her out privately.

I'm in exactly the same situation, as people said your like me limited by language. What i do is target high end hotel bars as the girls there speak english, and also i get the numbers from the massage girls (strictly above the biard places without happy e) as they are suuuper hot and often come from province, although must admit they are a bit more flaky. If i date one of the chix with limited english its straight to a super loud bar, tequila, then club then ...

As others have said, take it more easy and relax.

And yes, women look for a provider....but you can get notches without being one. Have you read the Seeking Arrangement thread? It's a bit like Chinese women looking for providers, make them think you will provide for them, get notches and then say it won't workout or something.

Get to know cheap but good places near places you frequent, that way if a girl or two ask you if you're hungry you can invite them to a place you like. Thus you will avoid an expensive bill and beating. If they refuse to go to your choice(s), let it go, eventually there will be someone that will accept.

Focus on speaking the language and reading the essential stuff (restaurant,hotel,etc) so you can know you way around town.

I had extremely little time to game lately, I mainly scoped out some bars, problem seems to be that people just sit around and drink, no mixing. Got to find some clubs. I got better at reading IoIs I think, but main point will be the language. Will continue this thread but it may take a while, since office hours are killing me.

I dunno, my experience in China is that it's not much of a bar/club culture. Maybe it has to do with how so many people of Oriental descent (Chinese/Korean/Japanese) can't hold their liquor due to inability to metabolize alcohol (it's genetic).

In the last city I visited, I was staying at a hotel pretty close to a bunch of university dormitories. I went walking around there on a Friday night (it was like a big outdoor mall) and was shocked to see no one was out drinking. All the cafes were full, and plenty of people hanging around in the plazas outside, but everyone was drinking juice, tea, etc. There was basically one proper "bar" in the whole place, and it had about 5 tables. I stopped in there, and of the people in there, fewer than half were drinking alcohol. Of course, I fit quickly into the stereotype that foreigners like to drink when I ordered a double-vodka cocktail.

Now expat bars are a different story. The ones I went to were like half expats, and half the Chinese girls who go for that type. On the plus side, you're likely to find lots of the Chinese girls there can speak Chinese. On the minus side, you may find some of the girls were like the town bicycle (everyone's had a ride) since it's a smaller circle and they probably jump from one laowai to the next.

I'm due to travel to China again later this year, and the easiest routing for where I'm headed (mid-tier Chinese city) is via Shanghai. I've heard the women are quite stuck up, but I've also never been there and would like to just look around anyway. I'll probably spend a few days there before heading to my final destination.

I forgot about this, but have you tried going to KTVs? Maybe get some expat friends or invite a girl to a KTV, if not....you could try to go to one and make some friends there.

The problem with china is that they are a social circle society.

KTVs... haven't been in one yet, and it seems inevitable that I will go to one. Chinese contractors inevitably bring us foreign experts to KTVs (and free lunches and massage parlors with a happy endings. Come to think of it, I've never had a decent handjob). I do not force the issue about KTVs since I think I'll get more than I can handle very soon, also it seems very insular (KTVs mean you go to a karaoke room with drinking with only the people you came with. So no meeting new faces).

I'm waiting for my job situation to settle down, defining my contract long term, getting the drivers licence and a car, and easing working hours from 14 to 8 a day, and having time to learn some rudimentary Chinese. Then I'll have time to actually game. Until then I can post only about small flashes of opportunities.

I guess I'll go the online route after all...

In Shenzhen the Chinese drink like there is no tomorrow, interesting to see the regional differences, everything else said is the same though. The hottest girls with modelesque looks congregate in the local place ie tiny dance floor etc sadly unlike other asian metro's

A major point where allegedly foreign men are at an advantage over locals, according to local women, is hygiene. True or not? I never smelled a Chinese man so I wouldn't know. From what I've seen in the gym Chinese are every bit as clean as other races.

Shaving: I noticed getting way more IoIs with a two day beard, my beard is not that strong, but I'm very pale so five o'clock shadow is very noticeable. I guess I stand out compared to Chinese whose beards are at 13yo boy level. However, I don't think a local honey would like to make out with a sandpaper-like face. Shave regularly or not?

So, a brief summary, and in later posts I'll go in detail.

I landed an engineering gig in western China, and I'll be living/working/gaming in Xian and surrounding smaller cities for the next year or so. At this moment, I'm in my third week in Xian.

This area is unlike Beijing or Shangai, according to stories. Less money to go around, locals less used to foreigners. Xian is an university city with 50 universities, not a typo.

my assesment of the situation:

Pros: I have access to both first tier and second tier cities. I'm white, built, (190 lbs with~ 12% body fat, muscled, abs pop out in some poses), tall (6 ft, that's equivalent to 6ft 6in in China), money (not going into details, but my income here will far surpass a typical teaching job, probably will have access to a SUV through job). China game leans towards beta, so given my betaness, would be less of a hurdle. Mandarin spoken here is both better understood throughout China and easier to learn (they skip on one level of vowel accents here). Access to college girls, since coffee shop where English is understood is almost always a college area shop. Lots of attention bestowed upon me, but not sure if it qualifies under IoI, or just seeing a white man. Noticeably more of it in the second tier cities. Gym seems like a really good place for game here.

Cons: Absolute beginner in Mandarin, while locals speak no English. Working hours too long, less time for game. Beta Max with great approach anxiety. Was expecting housewives ready to refresh their sexless marriages, found none that fit the description (only college girls and leftover women for me?). Need to get acquainted with local customs/behaviours, since I really cannot read Chinese faces. Disgust towards some parts of Chinese mentality (in particular treatment of dogs). No social circle of people my age so far. Cannot reach any info on prostitution and massage parlors, goddamn language barrier and the Great Firewall of China.

That's it for the intro, I'll get into stories and specifics in later posts.

This will be a journey of effort, mistakes and progress. Any comments, criticisms or suggestions are more than welcome.

From my understanding of Chinese in America (Los Angeles), and my reading of various forums, including this one about chinese in china, I believe that the 6s telling you that they are hungry is like asking you if you want to hang out for a little bit. By the time you get to the restaurant, one or both of them will probably insist on paying the bill and/or probably secretively pay for the meal before you even know that the bill has arrived. And, their economic status will not stop them from paying, even when they well know that you earn much more money than they do.

It is possible that there may be a scam lined up based on potentially your outward appearance of wealth, but really that seems very unlikely, and the more likely scenario is that they just want to get to know you. I would suggest that if you want to practice your game, to take them up on the offer, and to see how it plays out, and on the cautionary side, to which you alluded, I would just watch that the bill does not go so high that you would not be willing to pay for it.. at least on the first time.

Regarding the beard. I believe it is a good idea, and brings an exotic factor. I would not think that it would be a deal breaker for getting girls - even though some of them may complain... IMHO, complaining does not really mean that they do not like it....

I didn't notice the hygiene thing, but it may be different in Xi'an. As for facial hair, I think it's a plus, but make sure it's well-groomed i.e. not scraggly hippy beard. Many Chinese can't grow a proper beard, so you'll stand out in a good way.

Don't worry about the kissing thing -- once you've gotten that far, you're already set.

Which reminds me, soon I need to book my tickets to China for this fall, before the prices go up.

Once again on the WTF story...

It could have been a legit come-on, what bothers me is that it came twice within five minutes and then nothing. It may have something to do with the fact that it was the ending of the school year so now less girls are in the university city, they're back in their home town. I don't know.

Saw briefly a very cute translator that worked in my company a month ago, then quit. Wouldn't have tried anyhing while she was my colleague, but now... don't know, we'll see.

I have to go to Hong Kong for a couple of days. Goddamn job is too demanding right now, I will try to cut back on it, and game more. Reading the beginning of the thread, it feels like a disappointment. It's been a month and I did nothing.

My real-life game is terrible but I did OK in China. I started with online dating, but after being there a while I got introduced to friends of friends and I also went to a dating party.

With Chinese girls just be yourself. If you have to work really hard to impress a Chinese girl then there's no point. Thankfully there are just so many others to meet.

I lived in Guangzhou and the pollution was terrible. I thought it was the humidity but I'm now in Bangkok and the air is very clear indeed. Also China is full of hidden dangers like Cadmium in your rice and shoddy electrical wiring (a waitress at my local Cantonese restaurant died after opening the fridge).

Learning Mandarin is a must if you want to date the hotter girls - they invariably don't speak English. From my experience and those of others I'd estimate it would take 1.5 years of living in China to become good at conversational Mandarin.

I really like your detailed descriptions Chrysalis, even though as some others have posted, it seems that you may be over thinking parts of the situation b/c with your height and income, you would seem like a shoe in for having girl's wanting to bang with you. But, maybe ultimately, you are having some time issues with your work and you are not comfortable in taking time to (or even potentially wasting time) with the "hungry" girls. Sometimes, I have those kinds of issues too, and sometimes, work can really screw up good game potentials. I have these situations, sometimes, where i do not feel as if I have enough time and/or energy to go out and to play around with some girls.. which definitely gets in the way of game. Also, if you are kind of preoccupied by work, that can also really time-suck away from game possibilities, even when those game opportunities may be all around you.

I am looking forward to hearing how you decide to play the "i'm hungry" routine, b/c it is quite the story in itself to witness how some of these girls can sometimes express their interest through subtleties, such as "im hungry" or "we are hungry." I am fairly certain that you will get a laugh out of it, in the event that you let it play itself out - though I am not opposed to taking certain precautions, such as choosing the place or limiting your involvement in some place.. but I suspect that more adventure will come from letting the girls lead a little bit in this situation b/c they frequently have tendencies to dote upon westerners (and they really cannot help themselves) and even here in my current Los Angeles location, believe it or not, sometimes, I am in those kinds of situations in which Chinese women will dote on me... especially in situations in which I already have obtained some social approval. I imagine that doting to be even more intense in their homeland.
