Wednesday night: Went out to try and hit Barzin. Had to call it off pretty quickly because my stomach grumbled with the 'you're in a new country, now die' shits. Lucky I made it back to my spot in time.

Thursday: Spent pretty much all day at the beach. About an hour in, an absolute stunner grabbed a seat next to me. She was alone, so of course I opened with, "Do you speak English?" Turns out she did. She ended up being from Vitoria (now I know what you guys are saying about that place), but mentioned her boyfriend lives here and was coming to meet her in a bit.

Did some day game as I ran some errands around the neighborhood after my beach day. Ran into a couple of girls on line in Starbucks. I transitioned my "Do you speak English?" into a 20 minute conversation with them at Starbucks. Ended up that they're both doctors, and had done some studying in the states. I immediately moved into my 'most interesting man in the world' ramble. I got the more extroverted girl's number, then texted her an hour later. She immediately texts me back, "Hey MaleDefined, you should text my other friend instead. Her number is xxxxxx" Wow. That's not a jealousy cock block. That's COCK PROMOTION. I love it.

Was supposed to meet up with Capitan Peligroso later in the day/night but we couldn't link up. I could've used him too, because a couple hours later a pipelined OKC girl shot me a message saying she was over by where I was. Except she was with a friend. In America, I wouldn't even reply back, but fuck it, I'm in Brazil let's see where this goes. We have a Caipirinha by my spot, then the friend proposes we go to Lapa because she has some friends there.

They just came from the protest, and openly told me that as it gets darker, it becomes more dangerous to be around there. I gently suggest that the protest is taking place between where we are and where Lapa is, but the girls say they know the buses here and they know how to avoid it.

Fuck it. I'm going to Lapa with a couple of bubbly 21 year old girls. As we roll through Copa, then Botafogo, then who knows where the girls note that traffic usually isn't this jammed up around here. Sirens are blaring everywhere, horns honking, cops on black motorcycles flying around the place like ninjas. Chanting gets louder, an angry monotone chant at that. The bus keeps going and the people on the bus are beginning to yell incomprehensible things at the driver, but the situations is getting worse. At that, hundreds of protestors come running down the street yelling, banging and smashing the bus. I've never smelled tear gas before, but fire through my nose and eyes tell me that's exactly what is going on here. This is everything TripAdvisor, or "How To Be A Carioca" never told me about. My girl is on my arm telling me how scared she is, and I'm cursing myself over the fact that I've trusted two 21 year old girls.

People exit the bus frantically, scattering in all directions. The three of us jet out, run, run some more until were out of breath from the combination of running and tear gas puncturing our lungs. My girl looks at me and goes, "you are the hero!" I wouldn't call myself that, but yes dear, I am the hero.

We eventually make it to Lapa where we meet up with my girl's cousin and her boyfriend. WTF, how many people am I going to meet? Mom next? We then duck into a pool hall, that any gringo would never step into. We played pool, kissed plenty, and had an awesome time. The whole group was trying their English out on me, I learned some Portuguese and it was all in all a pretty crazy, but really fun night. At one point, these dudes playing pool at the table next to me found out I was a gringo and that I liked futbol. In our best PortuSpanGlish we shot the shit about futbol, it was real. This type of night was the type of Rio I signed up for.

A few things:

-I've never had more fun on a date. There were no games to play. I totally shut that 'game' portion of my brain off. If you can ask a girl if she speaks English, get her number, meet her at the beach, then be persistent, than you to can have success here.

-Girls want their friends to meet guys. They don't play any games either. There is no jealousy. At the end of the night, I knew I wasn't getting laid because she lives with her mom and said she'd be home by 12. I pushed for it, like any Brazilian guy would but she couldn't. What was great was that her best friend and her cousin were the ones egging her along to go home with me. Once again, COCK PROMOTION.

-I'm beginning to throw out much of what we're programmed to do in America. Aggressiveness that would get me slapped, or arrested in America are perfectly normal, and even promoted. Also, persistence to the point of almost being annoying works here. An American girl would simply text me with, "stop talking to me" with my persistence.

-No matter how many books you read about Brazil, you cannot prepare for the culture change here. What's up is down, and down is up. There is a learning curve that could take weeks for the unprepared, and a week for even the most prepared. In addition to Roosh's book, and the forum posts, I'd encourage you to take a look at The Maverick Traveler. I really connected with many of his insights.

Prob do up Lapa tonight. Last night's girl wants to meet. I have another piplined girl and her friends who want to meet. Also, will prob meet up with Capitan Peligroso at some point today or tonight.

Met up with Capitan Peligroso last night and hit up Rio Scenarium. That place is freakin gorgeous. Really liked the vibe there. Life isn't all about banging, and it was awesome to see cariocas of all ages get down to samba. I didn't pull last night, but I picked up a solid number from a girl at Scenarium who was there with her mother. She lives up the block from me in Ipanema, and is definitely of the quality I want to bang. I made her get her mother so I could introduce myself, and gave her the most interesting man in the room routine.

I somehow ended up fucking wasted last night, and I'm thinking those Caipirinhas are much stronger than I thought they were. I was approaching with ease, but the drunkenness didn't help me too much.

Men up with a top girl today at the beach. It's definitely awesome to go on a first date with a girl in a thong, I don't think that will ever get old here. Observations:

I've read recently something about religion in Brasil. It is the country that has the largest born-again xtian evangelist population in the world, with about 25% of brasilians being part of the born-again Evangelical community. And the percentage of protestant Pentecostals is about 15% and growing. There are 40 evangelical and pentecostal churches opening in Rio every week. Those people live exactly as their preachers tell them to, that is in a conservative way. It sucks. Brasil is definitely not the carefree sex paradise that many people imagine.

Checked out some of that video. Pretty awesome stuff.

Hit up Sao Cristoval last night in zona norte at the recommendation of a Carioca. Was way in over my head being the only gringo in the entire place. English was abolutely non-existent here. On the line to get in I met this Brazilian dude named Wallace. Wallace had an obsession with American culture, particularly with going to Kansas(???), and was eager to try his infantile English out on me. I decided to use this to my advantage and command Wallace to open any girl I pointed at for me. Let's just say Wallace had no game. Wallace had such little game that it was negative game. I was probably better off in just speaking English myself. Wallace told me that I must 'strike' the women I want to talk to. Thanks Wallace, but no. When I told him I was leaving, the dude genuinely broke down and looked like he was going to cry at my departure. Fucking guy. I wouldn't go here to meet girls. The quality is quite low, and this is more of a working class carioca experience.

It was pretty late by this time, so I headed back to Ipanema and of course Emporio. I opened a girl living over in Copa, who had lived in Sweden, a master's degree, and spoke three languages. She had every box checked off on the gringo lover. After about an hour of playful banter with her, she told me she wasn't a good girl. Fuck me, she was the best prostitute I've ever run into. Getting into the higher quality Brazilian girls will take time. Dating culture here is completely different, and so informal. I've been to baile funk parties and if you're going for the girls, forget it. Seriously, forget it. If you're going for the cultural experience, that's different, but for the girls, two main things:


1.) The girls at these parties are not what most people would consider attractive. Any that are usually taken and you seriously don't want to mess with any of their hood boyfriends.

2.) NEVER leave the party with a favela girl if you are a gringo. You are asking for trouble. Sure, she may be cool with you, but being a gringo, everyone in there is watching you, and as soon as you leave the party venue and venture into other parts of the favela, you're game for a mugging. Seriously, I know many who have experience this.

If you go to a favela party, go with people who know the scene or on one of those favela party tours that are organized sometime by various hostels. Don't go by yourself or with some favela girl...you're just asking for trouble if you do.

If I hit a favela party, it would be exculusively for the cultural aspect. I love getting gritty and seeing what the world is about. I'm not walking out of these things trying to bang some favela girl.

Jobi has more the feel of a pizza place than a bar. It's open late and better to hit after going out to me. There can be some girls there and you'll sit close to them but the place is small and filled with tables so not the best for chatting up chicks unless they happen to be seated next to you.

Think of it like gaming a typical American girl who has a "religious background." Play the "God" card as Maledefined mentioned & see where that gets ya. Heck I have a self-righteous uncle who was "born again" yet a lot of the teens at his church were sleeping with each other under his nose, haha.

My Portuguese professor (Rio native) was a 6-1 tall blonde who came from a family of pastors. She's been married 4 times with a rebellious past and is currently single. Scary night last night here in Rio. Went out for beers early in the night with my landlord again. Dude is super successful and cool as hell, got some more insights into this place. I called it a night early because I wasn't feeling well.

As I was trying to sleep a series of loud booms, followed by chanting and helicopters flying all over the place. There was pretty widespread vandalism here, this being the most cosmopolitan part of the city. I just finished up with beers with my landlord so I shot him a quick text asking if this is common. He said he's never seen anything like it in the 13 years he's been living here. A lot of windows of banks and other 'institutional' type of places here and in Leblon, with Leblon being far worse. People seem a bit uneasy, and worried that this may continue. The police presence is a bit overwhelming with cops everywhere and police helicopters buzzing the city constantly.


A million people are invading this place because of the pope. Walking around here, it's like the fucking United Nations of God. I wanna go out tonight, but I'm not feeling well and I don't feel like dealing with riots on my drunken way home.

I'm treating every girl here like a science project, and I'm coming up the conclusion that Roosh is spot on in saying success here comes down to looks and luck. There is no common pattern as to what makes a girl attracted to you.

With this whole God thing going on, there are a lot of naive tourists walking around here. I was out with a girl further towards the north end of Copa two nights ago, closer to Leme and there were these Jesus worshippers just meandering around with SLR cameras, watches, etc. I can only imagine what'll happen if they get stopped by the wrong crowd. The God card don't play much in those situations.

I don't think I'll have much trouble. I've done enough traveling, I'm a pretty big dude, keep it simple, move fast, and stay on main streets.

I won't lie though, these are worrying times capable of derailing a lot of the good vibes I've gotten over the first 10 days here.

There really is no place like it on earth. I've been to 20+ countries and 40+ international cities and Rio was the first place I've visited a 2nd (and 3rd, and 4th) time.

It has a very carnal energy that I haven't felt anywhere else. SEA cities feel seedy by comparison and first world cities just feel sterile next to Rio.

Most upper class Cariocas try to ignore it, but the juxtoposition of the favelas rising over the rich in Zona Sul creates an inescaple, and somewhat tense, social dynamic. While the beach remains the great egalitarian equilizer.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. You seem to have enough common sense to know what to avoid. I can't see the city erupting into full scale rioting.

Look at the plus side you're visiting in the 'slow season' and get to experience an entirely unique time in the history of the country and city. Your stories will end up being way more interesting than the suckers that pay 4x the price next year to mingle with gringos in the shit show that will be the world cup.

Just out of curiosity (personally I don't like Rio at all - the city is dirty and dangerous, nightlife is dull, the best girls have an unbearable "sou carioca" arrogant attitude, ect, ect, but as usual, to each its own), aren't you guys turned-off by the outrageously expensive cost of life in Brasil, which is totally out of hand? Many things are even more costly than in Paris -and most often for shitty quality and service.Of course, one can object that you can eat at comida a kilo buffet restaurants, drink beer from the bottle at bailes funk, sleep in dingy hotels/apartments, ect, but what kind of guy wants to travel halfway around the world to live like a rat once on location ?

MD, you said that your target group is the Ipanema/Leblon/Barra patricinha (which requires a costly lifestyle - going out in trendy places, dating girls in nice cafes or restaurants, ect), can i ask you what is your daily budget ?

With the help of #1 the RVF community, #2 sheer determination, and #3 good financial resources, one can most definitely reap the rewards of Rio as I personally feel it is one of the world's great cities.

My gripe with Rio however is it's probably not that "cosmopolitan" for a place that possesses one of the most rents in the world. Then again I have many friends who absolutely love Rio for that same reason so all the more power to them for finding that preferred destination they can visit many times.

I didn't really try all that hard my first time as I was there for just touristy stuff, but what's keeping me from visiting Rio a 2nd time for an extended stay is #2/#3 listed above. I just have a more burning desire to visit other parts of Brazil like Sao Paulo, Natal, Goiania, etc etc not to mention take 2nd trips to BH or POA for gaming. Financial resources & time are an issue because I'd rather allocate those towards new adventures within the country given my limitations.

+ 1 for the lack of quality & service for the overpriced accommodations in Rio. Now if I were going on vacation to a place for mainly sightseeing/cultural stuff opposed to gaming, I wouldn't mind staying in a hostel that had good ratings on say hostelbookers.com (very reliable site) where I could meet different travelers, etc. Had an experience in Budapest where I should've stayed in a nice hostel, but I instead chose an apartment because it was a really good deal per night yet had a horrible time gaming local chicks & making friends in the city.

Unfortunately for Rio in this case, I heard every hostel or budget hotel there is an atrocity for how it's priced (I stayed with a gal's family my last visit thankfully).

Kind of off topic here, but I don't see how Hong Kong is more expensive than Rio, lol. That assessment is way off the mark. Perhaps for monthly rent yes, but the quality of HK not to mention the # of career opportunities & commercial activity for all classes out there make it more justifiable.
