My advice: Dont tell anything to anyone, except people you know you can trust. If they ask you, say you are going to a more mundane destination, and do not remark about your trip. Coworkers in officework tend to be very jealous and bitter, specially if they are older than you. I speak from my own experience.

Just tell them you're into "Lonely Planet $hit" and you like backpacking and seeing a country like that.

What you do or bang is none of their concern. Just tell them you like traveling and always wanted to do something like this as a kid.

Just take a lot of photos of cultural sites and act like you know about the history of the place and all. I think it also depends on how you act when you're at work. If you're kind of antisocial or give off a creepy vibe, then people are going to think that you're doing shady stuff when you travel. If you're cool with and get along with everyone, they probably shouldn't think much of it.

It doesn't have to be Thailand, it can be Colombia, Costa Rica, Ukraine, Brazil, Amsterdam, Ibiza...most of these places conjure up hedonist type thoughts of orgies and drugs in people who have never been. I think if you go to such places alone, people will start to think such things. If you're in a group, they'll see it as normal.

It's their loss if they think that the only thing Thailand has to offer are drugs and whores. I've never been, but I'd love to get just because it's such a culturally rich place.... If the people you work with can't see that, fuck 'em, you don't need to hang out with or have anything to prove to such idiots anyway. Just do your job well at work and enjoy your life.

I really don't like to lie to my colleagues, for the simple reason that if I get caught one time, it can really affect trust. And I tend to forget stuff: imagine, one year afterwards I tell them by mistake that I actually ventured to Poland, so the story about visiting my grandparents in the countryside was false...

So I just prefer to say the truth but to basically mention: "no really, went to visit some friends I met in London when I was living there", "really, you cannot imagine how beautiful are the hills in a region called Zakopane there...", "oh, and that museum of the Warsaw uprising during II world war...". I didn't travel to Tailand, but I would probably prefer to talk about that beach where the movie "the Beach" was filmed, and the amazing food, and the strange insects they sell in the street.

As long as you act cool, ppl will not assume you were travelling for the mere sake of getting girls.

I agree with you, but it depends on the company. At my workplace, vacations are probably the most popular small talk subject. Some people even share their vacation photos and stuff. It's ok to not tell all the details about your vacations, but it's not OK to not tell where you're going, especially if you leave for a couple of weeks.

In my current job this wouldn't really matter.

At an office job this would be a big concern. Chicks and family men are already going to dislike you for being single and free. A mancation to south east asia is going to give them a lot of ammunition to undermine you.

Don't say anything and if you have to be vague. Say you just chilled for a while no plans really. It's a really difficult question to answer because my first impulse is to tell you to lie to the fuckers but that has it's own risks. I'd say to chose your words carefully and be boring. Volunteer nothing. Lie only if you have to.

Haha, shit this is why I never want to work in an office. If I'm ever in a situation where my buddy coming late to work proclaiming loudly about the great ass on the Columbian hooker he banged when he crossed to Mexico on his week off, but at the same time as he's saying this, realizes there is some presenation on sexual harrassment going on that he's just interrupted, well if I'm ever in a job where this wouldn't be considered hilarious, by everyone in the office, by men, women, and guy making the presentation included, I can't say I'd be working there long. Anyone who didn't find it funny, I would certainly disect and escalate. "Oh you probably don't understand, you see he paid money in Mexico to bang a girl, and you see women aren't people...but this fella at the front of the room thinks they are etc etc" Maybe I'm too long in the oil field.

That said, from the perspective of someone with some money saved up who doesn't need a job, I'd say fuck'em. I don't apologize for my adventures, I honeslty think it's the best way to live, and anyone who doesn't see that is probably jealous. If you have to go around hiding stuff, maybe you shouldn't be doing it? No matter what you do you can't please everyone so might as well be honest. The persona I would try and develop is one of an eccentric people can count on and gets shit done. If you can be bother irreplacibly competant, and have a reputation that preceeds you, I think you're golden.

I see it as fulfilling childhood dreams. Indiana Jones crossed with finding your dad's stack of playboys. Adventures and girls. Think of a 12 yo with unlimited resources. Man-child syndrome is probably the worse you could call it. But if they have a problem with it, it's *their* problem. Reminds me of this:

I went to Thailand on holiday. A guy in the office mentioned it to the secretary. She said "I heard they go to Thailand to sleep with little boys". Had it not been for putting my friend on spot, I'd have filed and HR complaint and sued that bitch out of a job.
