Lee Scratch Perry has been making music forever but this fairly recent (and untypical track) is appropriate for the forum. Poom Poom is Jamaican slang for Pussy.

Too many to think of- whoever said Dennis brown- I second that he's one of the best ever in my opinion. I really like Mikey Dread, who I discovered through The Clash -- he's all over "Sandinista!" and sang on some of their b-sides.

I think his best album is "World War III" from 1980, but anything from this period is good. There is also a greatest hits called "Best Sellers" that's fantastic.

He sometimes also incorporates elements of American soul music into his sound, like in the below song, which is loosely based on an old '60s number called "Grazing in the Grass."

And he's hilariously eccentric. Check the mistake/intro here and the way the band jacks up the best towards the end (their punk influence).

I love reggae although oddly enough dont really know many artists by name. When Im in jamaica I go to a lot of live shows which is really cool. At home ai normally just listen to reggae channels on streaming radio stations. Many are totally commercial ie lotsa bob marley and red red whine and stuff like that but some are decent. I would listem to those and use those to find some artists you like

Reggae has got sub-genre's right? One of those happens to be Dancehall. Because Vybz does Dancehall doesn't stop him from being a reggae artist to me just as much as Biggie stops becoming a rapper because he does hip-hop. Why ignore skills that artists have by categorizing them like that?

Much respect to you cats pointing out root music but I thought this was more of an expansive thread on "Reggae." If not maybe the thread should have said "Reggae roots."

Sorry to derail but hip hop involves the entire culture such as graffiti, breakdancing, dj'ing and rapping. Some people often confuse the terms because since it got popular (went mainstream), you have people saying they like rap and not hip hop when rap is a form that is within hip hop.

Dancehall, in my opinion is similar to the evolution (or devolution) of modern day rap to the era when you had more conscious raps.

Dancehall spawns from reggae music (don't quote me on this - resident Jamaican posters feel free to correct) where you have someone singing lyrics over existing beats very similar to the concept behind raps.

Most dancehall music is raunchy, vulgar, indecent and promotes womanising, anti-homosexuality and violence through the music.

That being said, I usually play dancehall when I'm lifting weights in the gym

Steel Pulse - Earth Crisis. More poppy and catchy, but great tune.





Burning Spear - Garvey's Ghost. I think this is another one of those "dub version of a roots LP" things. Another excellent album.
