I can't stand getting generic food at a restaurant. I cringe every time I step foot in a joint that's menu reads "caesar salad, calamari, burger, sandwich, house salad, etc..."

Pretty much anywhere with a good selection of meat that isn't fish, and isn't too expensive. I'm not that picky, but I'm not going to bother hitting up a restaurant when I can cook a decent range of tasty meals at home.

Several mom and pop places around Chicagoland that I can't recall the names of. Chicago has some great hole in the wall places with piles of food for cheap. Have never understood how they could do it.

One I do remember is El Famous Burrito in Elmhurst. Burrito's as big as your head.

I like Nandos, it's a South African chain, specializing in Portuguese-Mozambican cuisine. (Mozambique was a Portugese colony.) There's a few in the States I think, but it's very popular over here.

Crabcakes: G&M, Linthicum, Maryland

Other kinds of seafood: Lobster House, Cape May, Jersey Shore

Cuban food: Las Vegas Restaurant, Miami (It has various locations, but I've only been to the one on NW 41st Street)

Pizza: Riviera Pizza on Taunton Road, Medford, New Jersey. It has three locations, but I've only been to this one. It's a real low key place and pretty out of the way.

Chinese food: Dragon House, Wildwood, Jersey Shore. This place is so good that the quality has definitely dropped, yet no other Chinese place is even in this place's league. I seriously doubt that anyone who has eaten there will disagree with me.

Cheesesteaks: Geno's Steaks, Philadelphia.

Hoagies: Bonelli's Market, Wildwood, Jersey Shore.

Mexican food: Tacos and Beer and El Fogon, Acapulco.

Italian American food: Criniti on South Broad Street in Philadelphia. I haven't been there in quite some time.

Steaks: For some reason, I don't have a favorite. For prime rib, the best place I have been to is the Library III on Route 40 west of Atlantic City.

Hamburgers: A place at the Jersey Shore that my dad used to own. For obvious reasons, I can't post the name here. If anyone is interested, I can P.M. you the name of the place.

I was going to mention Pa Ord, but saw that you threw that in there... Hoy Ka is another great place for Thai boat noodles and if you like Southern Thai cuisine, Jitlada is very good.

As for Urasawa, it's definitely on the level of stuff in Japan. $350 seems pretty low though, especially if you drink any type of sake. I think it was just under $600 each when I went last.

I date a lot in Georgian restaurants. It's often very atmospheric and romantic places, perfect for dates. And Georgian cuisine is succulent, Russian women love it ...satsivi, khinkali, shashliks, adjapsandali, tchakapuli, harcho, chahohbili, khatchapuri, lobio, ect, everything is mouth-watering. My n°2 favorite cuisine in the world - after french. Georgian wines - Mukuzani, Saperavi or Napareuli to name a few - are great also.

Hazara - the best indian restaurant in Jakarta.

It's a Jakarta-based company that now has multi-dining complexes branches in Bangkok (fantastic place, worth a visit), Shangai and Beijin.

There is in Hazara a lamb recipe (Lamb Raan?) from northern India, longly marinaded (I remember it was said on the menu that it required some 48 hours of preparation), braised and roasted that was fantastic and that literally melted in your mouth .....and those naans with crushed garlic on top !!! ...mmmm.

Yes I have and so was I. When Suzanne Goin was doing that food 15 years ago it wasn't very common. She was one of a few who brought the SF "simplicity" thing and Chez Panisse mindset to L.A. But she hasn't evolved and it was never that great to begin with. These days there is far better for the same or cheaper price point. I've never been a big fan of A.O.C. either. Just went after their recent remodel, the space is beautiful but the food is totally boring.

While I've been there a few times, there's definitely far better in the city. For your run of the mill burrito joint I actually like Cactus on Vine. Or the burritos from the El Chato taco truck.

That's 350 per person before tax, tip, or drinks. Last time I got out at $500 per head since I was taking it easy on sake. For a meal like that I actually prefer to BYOB some champagne or sparkling (though his corkage is like $50)
