You can tell when you go to Bavaria that the people there view themselves as a country within a country. Lots of old monuments dedicated to the old Bavarian kings and so on.

Well I'm pretty sure that I'm more well travelled than you are man... I've been to the Middle East, East Asia, and all across Europe.

Here's the thing : you need to make the distinction between travelling somewhere for a week, and actually living there for at least six months.

Let me explain to you why this is important and two very different situations that affect your perception of the hotness :

1) Case 1. You travel someplace for a week. You will go through the airport and/or the train station for long distance trains. Guess what? These are places were the wealthy people pass through and always you will see hot girls passing through these areas. Then, you will most likely hang around the city center. You will think, woaw this city is full of hotties, much better than at home! when really you are walking on the local equivalent of the champs elysées avenue, where again there is an unnatural concentration of the hotter girls the area can offer.
What also tends to happen is that you will give bonus points to girls with light exotic features, because of the novelty factor.
Result : you will go home with an inaccurate perception of the real hotness level.

2) Case 2. You live somewhere for six months. You can't live exactly in the center because rent would be too pricey. You go to commute everyday to an office in a boring industrial area in the suburbs. => You bump into normal people. You get to see all the girls that were less gifted by nature and can't spend their days hanging out in the center but need to work.
Also, after a few months the novelty factor wears off and you start to categorize girls the same as at home. 10% hot, 20% ok, 40% average, 30% ugly.
Result : you will go home with a much more accurate perception of the hotness level, which is really a reflection of your own eyes. This was my realization after one year working in eastern europe. I decided the low wage wasnt worth it.

Bottom line : the hotness is not in the girls, it's in your head!

There is clear difference between Germany and the neighbouring slavic girls and you get it immediately when you cross the borders.Moreover Germany is not a funny place unless you have Balkan or slavic friends.German culture does not facilitate pick up in any case.People are strict here if you try to make fun and entertain yourself Balkan style.

If you see a beautiful woman in Germany she almost always comes from a slavic country.The situation is really very bad although after some time you get used to this level of appearance as normal.

I lived in Germany for 6 weeks, so someone visiting Germany is somehow blind to the women until after 6 months when his eyesight suddenly focuses?. Takes me a day.

@kamaki Thats true. You just have to take a train from Dresden across the czech border to see the difference, its ridiculous. A couple of hours trainride but you might as well be on another planet. I used to live in the Czech Republic for a while. After coming back to Germany I was shocked at how ugly the german chicks were.
After a while your aesthetic senses recalibrate and you get used to it. But really in Prague I saw hotter girls on my way to the supermarket, then I see here in Germany in 6 months. I cant even remember the last time I saw a 9 or 10 in Germany its a really rare occasion and usually they are foreign girls. It doesnt really help that the chicks are stuck up, boring and dont care about the way they dress. You will see chicks in sweatpants all the time and the standard looks is jeans, ballerinas and a top. Theres really nothing sexy about it.

Obviously this creates a bad situation if you are into the chase. A girl who doesnt even get noticed in the Czech Republic can cause traffic jams in German and thats no joke Ive seen it happen.

so eastern european girls have a more agressive and sexy style, but after a while you just become desensitized to it.. it becomes the normal style. they lack class in general, wear cheap looking clothes. but I still like them of course. but in general it's a bad idea to go someplace just for girls. it's a recipy to not get girls.

not defending germany at all. first it would be better if they spoke french instead of there barbaric language. just saying the country is undervalued. it's flying under the radar.

so if you need to also make money in the place where you live, then you'll have a hard time in eastern europe. the reason is that eastern europeans are competent enough and cheaper, so multinational corporations don't need to send expats there. on the other hand, in germany you can have a first world lifestyle.

I am interesting in living in Berlin for 3-6 months (or a season out of every year) because it strikes me as the "San Francisco of Europe" in a lot of ways.

-Bohemian/Strange/Quirky counterculture

-Startup scene is arguably the best in Europe

-Cost of living for a major capital is good (this is unlike SF)

I am mainly interested in it as a travel hub and a startup hub.

Has anyone lived there and operated in the startup scene?

I think its not a bad idea to live in a place where there is abundant talent, even if the general attitude of the people is snobbish. It pushes you to improve yourself, make that extra effort to reach out to others. Not to mention the huge benefit to your game as you try to navigate multiple factors against your favor - language, culture, stereotypes and openness. The harder the battle the sweeter the victory

I just generally don't like being around arrogant people. Men, women, whichever. Granted, not all Münchner are arrogant pricks, but there are a lot of them to go around. On the other handa, it is quite a beautiful city.

Lived there several years and visited over a longer period. The Bohemian culture is still there but it is far more marginalised now for the reasons I stated above. Cost of living has skyrocketed (in particular for apartments). Not just that but many scams are being run by rogue operators. As a travel hub it is fine though not on par with major European hubs. The city airport at Tegel (TXL) looks set to continue operations because the transfer of Schoenefeld (SXF) Airport's operations to the new, ajoining Berlin-Brandenburg airport (BER) have been delayed several times. What a debacle.

The Technology Park at Adlershof near Schoenefeld Airport hosts a "Startup Centre" looking to attracts investors in new businesses. A broad array of tech, media and science companies reside there as well as around the former eastern states attracted by relatively cheap labour and favourable government incentives. So, as you said, there are a few things in it's favour, which is why you'll find a myriad of big brand internet companies there. Wages in Berlin are, on average, significantly lower than, for example, Frankfurt and Munich and the labour market is 'flexible'. So if you're planning a startup then you can leverage these conditions to your advantage, i.e. exploit highly-educated young people looking for a foot in the door by paying them a pittance. They will accept it and work for ages in the hope of later gaining a fully-fledged position or simply for the experience.

As for more information on life in Berlin, I'd recommend Spiegel International as a decent repository for articles if you haven't already read it and don't have a command of German. Use the search function there and have a little read about life:

By living in Germany I disovered that it is advantageous actually for German women to look unattractive.Some of the reasons:
1.By being unattractive and unfeminine they do not appear weak and can impose their will on everyday and working environment
2.They do not attract unwanted attention and avoid a lot of problems
3.They can scare the shit out of others by their appearance only.In Germany matters a lot who will scare the other and German women appearance contributes a lot to the desired result.
4.They avoid spending on beauty products and other unecessary stuff
5.They avoid boring superficial conversations
6.They can impose the unpleasantry to make the other part feel uncomfortable.They can be assertive and get sour expression.They do not need to smile.
All this gives Germany a serious sense of Kraft total power which I am afraid is absent in our weak states.

From an LA perspective, several of the hottest, sexiest-dressed, and most approachable-looking women I've seen here recently have turned out to be German. Yesterday I saw one in her 30s who was easily hotter than 99 percent of young LA girls. Not one guy missed it when she walked by.

The German women I’ve been coming across have been way friendlier and classier than typical hot LA women too. The same goes for the French women here. I get a little stunned actually by how easy it is to get European girls to stop and have enjoyable conversations.

Munich is not representative of most of Germany. In most parts, women do not have a particularly good fashion sense (nothing horrible, but nothing special), and they tend to be relatively asexual. From the body language, tone of voice and so on, I always get the feeling I'm talking to a guy when I interact with the average German chick. Just not my type, really.

I agree Germany and especially Eastern German cities are underrated. I'm halfway done with a Dresden data sheet. If you know your way around its one of the best places I know.

I agree on EE comparison - way more pretty women you'll see randomly walking around but if you know where to look German girls can be at the top end of the scale and make excellent conversation as well.

Although I have to admit that to my despair Czech chicks in Bohemia have been largely germanized(fatness,short hair,tatoos and mediocre clothes).Only the slavic eyes still betray their origin in some cases the rest is German.
