Disagree.

Why should they not travel? Why do they have to settle down and raise a family at 30? That means that conversely you are implying men should be settling down with these women at 30. Women have as much right to go have adventures and seek knowledge as the rest of us.

What she should not be doing is not hitch hiking lifts in India and getting into lorries with three Indian dudes ( I'd be sceptical however of the truth in this - Indian media sources are notorious for putting spin on the story to preserve the nation's image - tourist industry ). She did 4 big things wrong in combination: (1) travelling alone, (2) in northern India (the most backward part of India where all of these rapes are happening), (3) hitchhiked, (4) got into car with 3 men.

If any one of these things was missing, she might have avoided this fate. You almost have to be willfully stupid to get into such trouble.

And If I was in the situation where I needed a ride that bad, I would be watching my back the entire time. I do that in the states, let alone in the backwoods of India.

Eh, the media keeps playing up these rape stories in India. But if you look for cold hard statistics, there's no numbers to back it up. On any international survey India does not come out high in terms of rapes per capita. For that matter, the same is true for Arab countries.

Okay, you can say they're being undercounted in these countries. Fine, but that's just plausible conjecture, nothing more. I'd say be suspicious whenever a trend has been picked up the media. After the high-profile bus incident in New Delhi last year this has been a big meme. I say, show the statistics that this actually a major problem. I'd ask the same question whenever the U.S. media tries to play up white hate crimes, when most hate crimes are not even committed by whites.

Herein lies the problem. After we get done showering the victim with sympathy, we refuse to publicly have this discussion. It's always decried as blaming the victim. Well...there were things the victim did to place herself in a situation where harm could come to her. If a woman is going to travel alone to certain places, there are certain precautions she should be taking. Hell, if she's going to travel ANYWHERE alone, she should be conscious of safety. It could be a teachable moment, but we waste it because we can't have an honest discussion.
