Well, I think that the creation of a beautiful life often starts with the cultivation of a beautiful mind.

"Everything" is not all in our heads but we must have a healthy and productive mind in order to create the life we want.

I'm sure you would agree that Buddhism has helped many people to calm their mind. Other new age beliefs like positive psychology have also helped many people. There is no doubt that your attitude effects your life in significant ways. This is kind of new agey but it is no doubt true and important for all of us to understand.

If you want to change your life, the first step is often changing your attitude.

The ratio of mental work vs physical work is different for all of us. Some people have the physical part worked out but need to do a better job with their personal thought control and self talk. Others, have the mental part figured out but need to do a better job with creating the external support structure.

At various point in our lives, we may shift out focus from inner to outer or vice versa. For example, when I was younger I spent more time cultivating my inner world, now that that is under control I can focus more on my outer world. Things change over time. My needs today could change tomorrow.

We all must do our best to cultivate and maintain BOTH a beautiful mind and a beautiful lifestyle.

We all know people who seem to "have it all" yet are miserable, they need more mental-psychological-emotional improvements.

On the other hand, we all know people who have very modest lives yet are very happy.

So, it's a balance. It's different for everyone. I guess the key is self knowledge and self awareness.

Good discussion, sorry but i had to jump in.

I think both of you made really good points but i just dont understand why xsplat is saying that people in higher social positions are happier (you know i like reading your posts xsplat, so nothing against you). If this was true, people in richer countries would be happier than people in third world countries. Remember that some people may not be in high social positions but they may be happier because their quality of life is better. Lets say a guy making 1000 dollars a month in DR (which is a lot of money for locals) who likes to party,fucks hot women all the time, enjoys a nice weather throughout the year, lives in a society where people actually enjoy communicating to each other (opposed to the western world where people don't like people), he can commit minor crimes and get away with it (e.g. caught drink driving and paid a 10 dollars fine to get away with it), travel around the country all the time because there are always festivals, etc, compare this with a guy in NY who makes 10 times more money than the DR guy, owns a nice car and lives in a really nice apartment, i am almost sure his quality of life won't beat the quality of life of the DR guy. Reason why the majority of us on here are aiming for quality of life and not becoming the richest guy. I also believe there is a strong correlation between happiness and quality of life but not so much for happiness and money. Money doesn't buy happiness, quality of life does.

Also, there are a variety of different methodologies being used to show the happiest countries, this is never done by showing one simple indicator(e.g. money).

Yes, both are important, and I agree it's also good to sometimes focus very carefully on internal development.

Pitt, I read somewhere that status relative to your peers has a bearing on relative happiness. There have been scientific studies about that. I don't have any links - maybe someone else does, as that info has been around for a while.

So even in the DR it's likely that those with a bit more money than those around them will tend to be a bit more satisfied with life. It's a limited but real effect. Not the only part of the picture, but one part, and a real one, and a useful one.

On top of that of course are all the logistical benefits, and the ways a creative and insightful person could leverage money towards lifestyle and happiness benefits. That of course is not an automatic given - it's difficult to predict the things that bring long term happiness, and easy to mis-judge how to spend money for increased happiness. It can be done, but that takes careful creative thought.

For instance one way I've recently used money is to set up a second girl in a nearby 2nd apartment. I feel a lot better.

I'm also upgrading my wardrobe and plan to use both the increased confidence of having two girls that love me and looking my best to help with being at my most attractive for when I meet girls. What I've found matters is when I just got a new bang the day before, getting a new bang that day is easier, as is flirting with girls I meet through friends etc. You're just more confidently, stoic, and completely unfazed by the world, and girls notice that very fast. When you have many positive reference points with women subconsciously everything you do is better like your body language and your general vibe. I have a high notch count (200+, maybe 300, but only because I had 20 years of time to bring the number up) but, at least in my case, it did not change my charisma that much. It totally depends on the woman. Some women are rather shy so I "become" the alpha guy. Others are very dominant, hence I easily turn into a little mouse.

Maybe I'm the exception of the rule, but to be honest, I guess I was more "successful" back in my 20s, just because a) not too many rejections accumulated yet and more importantly b) the rejection rate was better, i.e. I was more successful than today. Agreed. Remember that a woman decides if she's going to fuck you within a few seconds of meeting you - yes or no. Identify the ones who are a 'yes' and don't do anything stupid to mess up the process. Ignores the ones who are a no. It's a cold lead. That's about it.
