Hi, i'm in the market to get a new phone that i can get unlocked so i can use it on trips abroad.

My sister (and family) is on the Verizon family plan so was thinking about getting an S4. But i am kinda leaning towards the HTC One.

I hardly use my phone (i almost never yak on the phone) but need to keep up with the latest mobile apps and marketing methods.

Which carrier would be the cheapest without nightmarish service, while allowing me to use it abroad when i go traveling?

And where would be the best place to buy? amazon, ebay, etc?

Is it better just to buy a used S3? It would be a lot cheaper, or is the upgrade in specs worth it?

Any other phone recs are also appreciated. I want a fast phone with a 1080p screen. (i even hate how slow my laptop is!) Thanks.

Verizon is not a good provider if you want to use your phone a lot overseas. Look at how few countries support global data (because of CDMA):

As for the S4 vs HTC One, well I have tried out both, and I actually like the sleeker look and feel of the S4 over the HTC One. Plus, the screen is bigger on the S4 even though it is about the same size as the HTC One (this is because the HTC One has stereo speakers on the front of the phone). The S4 also has a faster processor.

It's a wash basically you can't go wrong with either. The iPhone 5 isn't even in the running.

s4 has a removable battery, that's what convinced me.

The res difference between the screens is negligible:

HTC One:~469 ppi pixel density
S4: ~441 ppi pixel density

Your eye wouldn't be able to tell the difference since the average human eye can't really tell pixel density beyond 300 ppi. The main difference between the screens is how colors are represented.

It's the proper 1080p that matters for the res with the HTC one, it will best display full Hd videos. As I said, it's pretty much a wash. You'll pay about $80 more for the better hardware I the S4 while the HTC One is a proper machined piece of aluminum.

They both have the same processor although the S4 is clocked slightly higher than the one. Both screens have the same resolution, 1080p. The One has a slightly higher ppi, but at those levels it's negligible. I have the One and it's a great phone. Love the remote feature on it and the camera in low light is great. Speakers on the front of the phone is not only loud but the sound quality is stunning. Sense 5.0 runs great on the phone with no lag whatsoever. Never used an S4, but that should be a great phone too. I personally don't like touchwiz.
