The difference is that guy goes on a few days R&R in Pattaya and what happens stays there. Wow... I had no idea it was that bad. Although they must've gotten the numbers wrong, 18 suicides a day is +6,500 deaths a year. They're saying that 950 veterans receiving help from VA make the attempt every month, 7% succeed, and that about 30% of suicides are committed by those receiving VA help, indicating 220 deaths a month, or about 7 suicides a day. Nonetheless... even 2,500 deaths a year is mind-boggling. That's vastly more than Iraq+Afghanistan combined.

I always felt that Vietnam meant more to the average American than WWII.

In the same way the war with Japan means more to the average Chinese person than Hitler and the holocaust.

I mention this because people in Europe underestimate the psychological trauma of Vietnam. Whilst overestimating the psychological importance of WWII. I think the average American (whilst not being happy about it) could have lived with countries like France or Britain being taken over by Russia or Germany. With that said - it is important to remember that most historians reject the idea that Hitler was hell-bent on invading Britain. Since Hitler believed Britain could be a useful partner in any future German empire with similar aims and goals.

The second world war is a weird one. I haven't started my study of it yet (ie put together a reading list and work my way through it). Since Peter Hitchens (my favourite writer) is currently writing a book on it - and I want to start with his book.

But - from what I have learned in the past - it seems that WWII was essentially a war between Germany and Russia which British diplomatic incompetence caused to be expanded out into a war across the whole of Europe.

While our politicians are shit and the country is going downhill, and as much as I can be critical of it, I still love the place. If I was to go to war, it wouldn't be for the government, it would be for our people. That being said, I would never participate in any of the wars that have gone on since World War II as I don't feel like they were justified. Our country was never in danger of any of the countries we've been into since WWII. I would only go to war if I thought there was a just reason to fight.

Yeah, you're right. I guess the average American is an idiot. I mean we DID elect George Bush for two terms didn't we? But regardless of that, there are so many great people in the US, I'd still fight for my country had I thought we were in true danger. American men are just easier to become friends with than most foreigner. I have more in common with them than others. It's strange that I prefer foreign women but prefer to be friends with American men I suppose. I'm not saying though that I'm not friends with foreign men, it's just my closest friends are all American.

+1 - no joke my brother was stationed in Yuma for years and there is like zero p*ssy there, and what's there is G*D awful. He just got engaged but is getting deployed and I have serious doubts about the whole thing.

The scary thing is how ok he seems to be about the whole thing, despite all the horror stories about brides and brides to be cheating when their significant others are away. I told him upfront that I don't think getting married/engaged before you go away on a 9-month tour of Afghanistan is the thing to do, but wished him well. He said something like "oh, I would never get married before my deployment, but think getting engaged is ok" which makes little sense to me what whatever.

Looking at it from his shoes I can see the novelty of having a steady girl and 'locking it down' while away, but all the same I don't think that's the right way to look at it from a long-term perspective. More like the desperate "I need to settle down and get in a stable relationship" sort of mentality (ironically at the exact time when his life will be the most volatile).

Very good post, iknowexactly. I had the exact same realization from my exposure to other cultures. Westerners are rich because we have a superior culture. Obvious to eveyone who's been out in the real world really, except Marxist anthropologists and their students at Ivy League Schools.

The more I learn about history, why men fought, and what made them keep going even after defeat, the more I believe that national service MUST be part of any Republic that is to endure. And not just military service - that might make sense in times of war, but also for strengthening civil society in peace time. Imagine an army of committed and motivated youngsters ready to help out towns like Newark, Detroit or San Antonio. Restoring property, cleaning neighborhoods, etc.

Some truth here. I am latin american and I most of my experiences meeting Americans in the USA or in other countries have always been positive. I don't recall any negative experiences. American men are very friendly, and always have good vibes.

The army is mostly full of poor individuals who have a bleak future since most non-skilled labour jobs are shipped out overseas. Farenheight 911 talks about this. So I do not blame soldiers who took a job "serving their country" which I believe is only serving the special interests of a few. The elitists, war profiteers, political elite are the ones who pillage and devour poor countries and they use these poor citizens as soldiers to do so.

The incident a week ago or so in London with the Islamist killing the British soldier is a sad event. The Islamist targeted the wrong individual. Yes he was indirectly trying to influence foreign policy, but this soldier has nothing to do with it as he is just doing a job. They need to target the war profiteers who manipulate and start these wars.

As for wives of soldiers acting untrustworthy and leaving these guys high and dry, well lesson learnt! Don't get married to these skanks.
