Billy Joel on dating beautiful women
I almost posted this in Game. Obviously, Billy Joel is a rock star, but there is still something nice and uncomplicated about his attitude. From today's New York Times Magazine:
A.G.: Right before you married Christie Brinkley, you dated Elle Macpherson. And later you married Katie Lee, also a young, very beautiful woman. Do you think your relationship with female beauty is any different from any other red-blooded American male?
B.J.: A lot of guys are just too intimidated to even ask them out, but I had a great way to meet people. People are just interested in you because you’re a rock star. O.K. Some guys use a car. Some guys have a cute dog. I’m a rock star. That’s who I am, what I do. What’s wrong with that?
A.G.: What’s the hardest part of being married to you?
B.J.: There’s a pain-in-the-ass factor with celebrity. There are a lot of moments you don’t have because people interrupt them, and you try to be polite, but sometimes people just don’t think. I try to be as nice as I can and as polite and well mannered as I can, but sometimes it’s ridiculous, so I don’t go out as often as I should. I was never able to take my daughter to an amusement park, which I would have liked to have done, or do things in public, because it kind of gets silly with people’s perception. On the other hand, I was married to some beautiful women. I always get compared to how beautiful they are and how not beautiful I am, and it’s kind of funny, it’s like “Beauty and the Beast.” I don’t mind being the beast, I want them to be good-looking, and if they don’t mind me looking like me, why should I care?

RE: Billy Joel on dating beautiful women
I really appreciate Joel's honesty. He worked to get where he is, and makes no illusions regarding how his status in society has put him in position to take advantage of access to beautiful women. At the same time, top models get hollered at by famous men from the sports world, Hollywood, AND the music world. There's a lot for her to choose from, and Joel still pulled top chicks looking the way he looks. So it can't be ALL about him being a rock star. I also like how matter-of-fact he was about the downsides to his stature. Simply from a human perspective, it's unfortunate that he couldn't do some things with his daughter that the rest of us can. His money and status couldn't buy that for him or his kid. It isn't about eliciting sympathy. It's just how it is.
One thing he IS right about, even for us non-celebs - not having fear of approaching very attractive women. Make no mistake - attractive women know they're attractive. And they know they've gotten certain things from not just men, but other women because of it. I'm sure there are some attractive women that are complete bitches, and not only revel in the attention and advantages, but feel entitled to them. However, there are plenty of them that are lonely and feel isolated because either they get the kind of attention they DON'T want, or aren't getting approached at all. To know which one you're dealing with, you have to step up.
"The best kind of pride is that which compels a man to do his best when no one is watching."

Know your enemy and know yourself, find naught in fear for 100 battles. Know yourself but not your enemy, find level of loss and victory. Know thy enemy but not yourself, wallow in defeat every time.
