A junior-high school Spanish teacher has filed a lawsuit alleging that she was fired from P.S. 211 in the Bronx in March 2012 because of a misunderstanding over the word “negro.”

The non-tenured teacher, 65-year-old Petrona Smith, maintains that she was instructing her class about how to say the various basic colors in Spanish, reports the New York Post. The word “negro” naturally came up because “negro” is the Spanish word for “black.”

A seventh-grade student in the class took offense at the term, however, believing the word to be a racial slur. It’s not clear if Smith directed the term at the student. Whatever the case, he reported the incident to school officials.

My god, that's crazy. And a seventh-grade student at that - that's what, 13 years old? Our ridiculous PC culture has gone so far that even children feel the need to serve as spies against the Great Evil of Racism / Sexism / Body Shaming / Nationalism and whatever. How does the claim of racism make it past the principal??
The only way i see this making it up to the school board is if a white person got offended along the way and by offended i meant offended by proxy. Probably another teach who didn't like her co-signed the the accusations of the racist teacher.

Even still i hope she sues the school board.

I'm thinking "they" had their cross hairs on her for a while and this was the event that got her fired. In this case it was only a matter of time.

She might have a right to freedom of speech but her right to be a NYC school teacher isn't absolute. Coming from the NY POST I can guaranteed there's more to this story. NY Post has made race trolling into an art form. I do not even use that paper to line the bottom of my litter box because I have too much respect for my cat.

They just don't fire Black females from Govt jobs in NYC unless there's a good reason. Black males are not afforded this courtesy. That's why you see a lot hood rats with good jobs and pensions in NYC yet you do not really see thug ass tyga looking dudes doing the same.

My guess is that she wasn't fitting in for whatever reason and she was put on the Board of Ed hit list. You can actually get fired for any reason or no reason at all in civil service jobs in NYC provided you are still on probation.

One could argue that the mainstream media (NY Times, Wash Post, TV networks etc.) made race trolling an art form of sorts - mainly to endlessly and tirelessly try to teach us all a lesson about 'racism' to the point of insanity. From Tawana Brawley to Crown Heights to the Duke Lacrosse scam lawsuit they have an incredible habit of only showing one side of the coin in all matters of race/sexuality etc. I lived with that crap my whole life in the US and am so sick of it that I don't even bother reading the mainstream press anymore...I know it's all hopefully biased and politically correct.

The Post, as annoying and hyperbolic as it can be, tends to show the stupidity of political correctness and the 'race' card especially in the NYC context. NYC is one of the most left-wing, liberal places in American so it's not like the Post has it on conservative lockdown. And the Daily Mail is pretty much the liberal counterpoint ragsheet to counter the Post so liberals get pretty much every print and visual media supporting their lame Feminist & "progressive" agenda, where all the right get is Fox News, the religious conservatives and Rush Limbaugh pretty much (not that I put too much trust in any of what they say for the most part either, plenty of biases there as well).

Re the last point, well that may be true, but NYC has a massively bloated city government and the common logic is it's incredibly hard in the City to get fired, ESPECIALLY for teachers due to the incredibly powerful and corrupt teacher's union. Those guys won't give an inch typically, even for teacher's standardsThe pension system is also spiraling out of control in NYC, and the public sector employees got away with murder for years (e.g. cops and firemen working double overtime for their last two years of service so they could 'lock in' their annual salaries at the highest rate, then retire at 55 at those inflated last few years of income).

If the teacher is untenured, then forget it. You can be fired without justification for pretty much anything in NYC.

I believe this is a poor example of the "PC destroying America" meme and she makes a shitty martyr.I am too lazy to look up the Board of Ed response to her court complaint on PACER but I am pretty sure that the principal in her school did her homework. Her disciplinary file is probably a mile long for write ups for little bullshit (being late, not following curriculum, dismissing class early, etc)

The way it works at City jobs is that once they have labeled you a "broken toy"(cuz you don't play well with others )The agency starts working backwards to justify your dismissal and that's when the little write ups for bullshit starts. Once you reach a magic number of them you get shit caned provided you are on probation.

You can still troll in city jobs but you need to be smart about it. Keep a low profile and tow the party line until you are off probation and then it takes literary a felony conviction to get fired. You can literary start teaching the joys of HBD to a classroom full of black kids while Al Sharpton is in the class and they can't do shit to you. For example,I used to have a teacher in high school in East New York(99.9% black) who had a big ass confederate flag in the back of his pick up truck and BOE did nothing about it despite the protest of Black teachers.

But I digress, My main point is that this negro incident probably happened way after it was already decreed that she has to go. They would have fired her regardless. If she would have read "The 48 Laws of Power" she would still have a job.

I think it's also largely due to her age. I'm curious how a 65 year old untenured teacher even got a job in the first place.
