Saw some people on my FB were signing a petition about letting this girl off. The petition was focusing more on the fact that she was a lesbian then the age of the people involved. After reading the comments it seemed like most people thought she was getting hit with the book because she was a lesbian and not because of the age difference.

It's extremely stupid that if a person is 1 day over 18 he is a criminal for having a sex with a person 17 years and 11 months old.
There should be a transitional period for example a sensible law would state that having having sex with a minor is criminal offense only if the "adult" is for example 3 or more years older than the "minor".

It's ridiculous how the current system pampers people before they turn 18 and then turns on them with full force suddenly.

People should be treated as adults from ages of 12-14. Then they will also turn into sensible adults. This is also the age when they mature sexually. If you keep forcing them to be children for 4-6 more years they will keep some degree of infantility well over their forties.

The sex of persons involved is irrelevant. This system is unfair to both men and women and it is wrong to applaud when it starts to become unfair to women too only because it has been unfair to men for quite some time already. The laws should be fair to anyone.

Well, both feminist and LGBT organizations will be angry over this - ones because this is against female sequality, and the others because this is against same-sex relationships. Yet it's the law and it must be applied. As Tuth said, it's the only way in which they can feel the threat that hangs over guys for being with someone younger.

The only reason this case is being prosecuted is because the victim is a woman.

She broke the law, the law in this case is not very confusing (stupid? Perhaps, but confusing? No), the law doesn't care that she's a girl, she likes to eat pussy or that she passes for bangable in the right lighting, it's not about that (so shoo, SWPL Dykes, Feminists and White Knights), it's about age.

It doesn't take a degree in Women's Studies to realize that the only way for teenagers to have sex responsibly is to educate them on it, enforce boundaries and raise them to have respect for themselves and for others. So I always laugh when a case like this emerges, where instead of doing this, parents plant their kids in front of the TV and the internet and let them get their ideas of sex from porn, Lena Dunham and the STARZ! Network and the media freaks out when something like this happens.

I agree with you to a point, Nomad. The fact that a man or woman can have their lives ruined by consensual sex because one is a little younger than the other is something that needs to be addressed. Especially when they're both students.

However, I don't think others on here have anything against her because she's a girl, what they're applauding is that finally, the law is being fair and punishing a woman for committing a crime that normally has punished men. It's rare that this sort of thing happens. Some of the reactions people have displayed in this thread are completely understandable. The law is the law. That doesn't mean that it isn't a stupid law, just means that's the way it is until people have had enough and demand that it's changed.

Has the damage not already been done here? Even if she gets off, she's been expelled, meaning any college admissions she had going are in serious jeopardy (if not revoked), and this thing is all over the internet, and we know how hard it is to get something off the internet.

A complete failure in parenting (at the individual and the societal level; kids these days just aren't raised to understand consequences), a rabid press and a questionable law, even if this girl doesn't get convicted, have severely damaged this girl's future prospects; these days, a criminal accusation is almost just as bad as a criminal conviction.

But if we're talking what I think and what society should think and how the laws should be written instead of how they actually are written: they should be focused on the actual harm caused to the minor. If any. Laws tend to take a zero-tolerance, litmus-test stance on the issue that merely looks at the age of the minor and details of sexual contact. From the article:

Most likely, the only reason it was brought to the attention of law enforcement at all is because it was a same-sex relationship. The parents got pissed that their daughter wouldn't stop hooking up homo with this Kaitlyn girl so they called the cops.

You are correct - but that is not the whole story.

I also agree with the guys who say she should get punished with the full extent of the law. I don't believe that because I think what she did is wrong. I believe that if she gets punished to the full extent of the law, female and feminist outrage may change or revoke this law, which is what we all want, in a big picture sense. She is sort of a sacrificial lamb.

Sure, if she didn't get the book thrown at her, it'd point out the glaring obvious, but that hasn't stopped feminists before. If she got prosecuted and destroyed, we might actually see a change in our favor. I think that is what most guys here actually mean.

I think your overestimating the "damage" done to this girl, assuming she doesnt serve any time(which she likely wont). There will be an army of feminist/LGBT supporters to get her back on track as we have already seen on the internet.

After this trial is over, regardless of the outcome the media will approach her to give an interview on oprah or ellen and she will likely get a book deal out of it. Afterwards she can major in Women's studies at some state school and have a secure job at some feminist organization waiting for her as a modern day "heroine".

I think she'll be fine, unless her dream was to coach high school basketball.
