I don't know what that means but that site is literally nothing compared to AirBNB. You just brought up something that you'd have to throw down $9,000 for a 1 month stay. It's pretty fishy.

RE: Airbnb Now Illegal in NYC
They can ban them all they like, but since they don't operate in New York state their isn't any sort of fines they can really lobby.

The company would face fines and the like. This would potentially scare away investors, but if the service gains enough critical mass, wall street would ensure that any and all objections disappear.

Oh and fuck NYC.

The free newspapers here (Metro and AM New York) are always running ads for furnished rooms in all boroughs, with bathrooms, cooking, internet and cable for $125 a week and up. I've never actually investigated and seen the rooms, but there are low-cost options for short-term stays in NYC.

It's not the company risking fines but the "host" (ie the ones putting their places up for rent).

This Business Insider article offers a little more clarification. Apparently this hotel law is a secondhand offense. So if the cops shows up due to a noise complaint and find out you're renting your spot, then you're in trouble.

To prevent landlords from running hotels with their properties, under the law a property can't be rented out for LESS than 29 days.

Its not 100% AirBNB, I'll admit. Its just halfway between AirBNB and $600/night hotel suite. Corporate Housing is the closest thing if AirBNB is illegal, same way how the $50 Uber limo service was the closest thing to taxis on demand (which were not allowed until recently0.

Yeah hotels in Manhattan are ridiculously expensive. Prohibitive for many people in these times.

This is terrible because it just pipelines listings to Craigalist where fraud is more rampant. Of course this was a lobby move. Shame the hotels can't rip people off, and shame people can't subsidize thier exorbent NYC rents.

Fuck Bloomberg. He's a oligarch and a major shill. I just wonder now if people will just list thier spots in "Jersey" and put the details in the discription. If its not Airbnb eating those fines they won't spend a nickle to monitor those listings.

People will find a way around. Govt is incredibly bad at enforcing this shit. How well has NYC cracked down on illegal apartments? No so good of course.

I have a friend who has basically doubled his income in NYC through airbnb. I'm afraid to shoot him a text today.

I'd say on the last year nearly every friend of friend of a friend I've met up with who is visiting NYC has said they are staying at an airbnb place. Airbnb is on fire for in the know 20-30 somethings. It's just another gross example of how off the pulse Bloomberg is when it comes to improving the city.

How come i can still book rooms in NY on airbnb?

If that shit ever comes true, that will be truly fucked up. There are some amazing deals on airbnb for rooms in NY.

Similar thing is happening right now with UBER, the on-demand private car company (Uber.com)

The local taxi lobby is trying to drive them out by making their service illegal.

This kind of shit pisses me off. These brilliant, efficient and well run startup companies are being wrecked by government blow-hards with nothing better to do.

RE: Airbnb Now Illegal in NYC
There should be a law about making stupid laws.

-Can't drink big gulps (NYC)? Check

-Can't be a capitalist and make $ off a slice of real estate you already rent (NYC)? Check

-Can't smoke within 20 feet of a door (santa monica)? Check

-Can't smoke period within city limits (Burbank)? Check

Shall I go on?

For some ODD reason, I don't believe this is the country our Founding Fathers envisioned when they crafted the Constitution.

Similar to execustay and other corporate housing. About $250-$300/day for 1 bdrm in NYC. 31 Day minimum though.

RE: Airbnb Now Illegal in NYC
Problem is a lot of tenants will be afraid to rent. This was a win for landlords. NYC is a renters city. I am sure rich co do owners dont rent apts short term. Most hoa and coop boards have rules against it anyway. Now tenants risk eviction. In my leases ,rent stabilized apt, it stAtes my lease can be terminated if I use or do anything illegal in/with my apt. No way is sOmeone paying cheap rent going to give landlord an excuse to boot them.

RE: Airbnb Now Illegal in NYC
I live in NYC and do volunteer work with the poor and elderly. There is a lot of abuse from landlords regarding illegal hotels esp in rent stabalized buildings and this has been a very good law in protecting long term residents in the city. Also I don't think this originated with Bloomberg, although in the end he endorsed it.

It is primarily a pro tenant law that is directed toward preventing abuse from landlords. If people are occasionally renting out rooms in apartments they themselves are living in then it shouldn't be a problem. But when it turns into a side business, especially if renting empty apartments, it's likely going to be ruled a violation. will be interesting to see how this plays out.

This might result in a decrease in the nightly rates for Apartments in NYC, People who were used to keeping their Apartments booked every night are used to the $$$ and will advertise one way or other to get the tenants in .....

I will contact the two Apt owners I have used last year when i go back to NYC.

We need some report from the ground in LES etc to how the Apt Owners are planning to handle the problem, Advertising on Craigs List, Local News papers , Rental companies etc etc..

All Short term rentals are affected (less than 30 days) AirBNB just happens to be the the biggest player in this niche market.

It's always seemed a little different to me. I understand that NYC taxi medallions can sell for more than $500,000 each. With that kind of investment you can bet the taxi industry would expect the state to protect their monopoly with violence.

I don't think that the taxes per hotel room would be anywhere in that region. And how much are hoteliers and the city really losing due to Airbnb? I doubt it's all that much. If they can't stay at places like Airbnb advertise many will just not visit NYC at all. I know I wouldn't. I hate hotels and always elect to stay in apartments if possible. Bloomberg must be careful. He shouldn't think that his media interests will allow him to project himself as "progressive" when the realty of his rule points to something else.

I used to hate it when you said that but, as these events pour in, I'm slowly coming around to recognize the truth. It's like how I thought the Chinese dictatorship was awful, but the current handling of the economic crisis made me give it some props, or how I thought Berlusconi was a chauvinist worth my scorn until I saw even worse behavior from feminists.

I could go on, but you get the point.
