Cops are also using unmarked cars like this. Hilarious that the people who are supposed to protect civilians are trying to hide and be sneaky. I hope nobody needs to flag a cop down when this is the only one around.

That raises a good question to raise at a city council meeting, why the fuck are they trying to hide when they are supposed to serve and protect?

The lowering to 0.5 is ridiculous.

When it comes to spending money on "awareness", I actually remember a MADD presentation from high school. It was this hyped up event with multiple huge video screens (had to cost a bunch) they brought in to show clips of movies and talk about the value of life or some shit.

It ended with some film/tv montage set to Bon Jovi's - It's My Life, I kid you not.

Even being younger I remember thinking what a waste of money this was, since they came across like they were proposing abstinence.

Not once did they focus on practical aspects of preventing drunk driving, like figuring out roughly what your BAC would be at certain weights, or trying out a breathalyzer once after drinking at home to determine your own tolerable number of drinks.

There's a lot of people that get nailed barely over the limit, and that's a lot more preventable with personal knowledge.

Also, to see how much cops actually care about drunk drivers, talk to someone who's called in a report on one.

You'll find that when it's not already convenient for police (i.e. grabbing people during RIDE programs and traffic stops) you won't get much urgency at all.

We've always had 0.05 all over Europe and I don't remember anyone ever complaining about it. There are plenty of gruesome accidents with drivers at about 0.1 that make me glad at least some fools are discouraged from driving while feeling the buzz.

We have had .05 in Australia for more than a decade and they police it really hard, no mercy

Even got more strict recently, u have to be UNDER .05, a right on .05 reading is now considered a fail, its 2 x mugs of full strength beer in a hour, your over the limit, fail.

U can even get done ON YOUR OWN PRIVATE PROPERTY

The limit's been 0.05 in Australia since before I can remember. You can really only have 1-2 drinks, then you've got to really nurse each one from then on for an hour each. It makes it a complete waste of time - if you feel any kind of buzz, you're over the limit....although that doesn't always stop me from driving. I used to drive even when I was fully blacked out, but I think back on those nights now and just think how fucking lucky I was to not kill myself or someone else.

A 0.05 limit just makes it a necessity to have a 'friend' who doesn't drink to ferry you around, otherwise you're going to be dropping a lot of money on taxis - if you can get one. A quick tip if you do get caught though - when (if) they ask when you had your last drink, say "right now". They do some sort of countback based on your reading and the time since your last drink - the sooner the better. It won't make much difference, but on the one time I got caught, it put me just under 0.08, which still resulted in a lost license and a fine, but only half as severe as if it had been over 0.08.

My friend's mom just passed away after getting hit by a car last a few weeks ago. They didn't catch the driver.

I'd bet it was from a drunk driver.

I got tested (off my face on all sorts of drugs, not just booze) and blew 0.07 so they took me back to the bus to wait and blow again. The guy in front of me was wasting a lot of time, so they tested me again with the handheld and got exactly the same. When I finally got to the machine I blew .072 then the guy said he calculated it back to when I got pulled over and he made it 0.046 or something. They followed up by dropping me off at my car and telling me I can't legally drive at the moment...

They've changed it here as well apparently (I need to check this out properly), if you blow anything positive you need to be taken back to a checkpoint and measured again. I got taken to the police station in the back of the paddy wagon (again on lots of drugs), only to be told I only blew 0.035 or something the first time. Do they really not have better things to do with their time?

And yeah, taxis are out of the question for a student travelling by themselves - costs about $60-$90 to get to my place from the city during peak times, and it's only like a 17 minute drive with minimal traffic stops..
