I've been meaning to make a "Biloxi, Mississippi datasheet" and at least speaking from that area it sucks pretty hard when you have New Orleans a hour and a half away to the west and Panama city 2 hours to the east. Sure, you can pull there but the quality of girls are not that great. There is a military training base with about 2,500 men, right out of boot camp willing to screw anything that moves, most of them are ages 18-28 and they hit on anything and everything, so any girl there has her ego inflated like crazy pretty damned quick. G, I've unfortunately never been there, but I think the clear choice here is Athens, GA. Tons of bars, huge student population, and somewhat close proximity to Atlanta (and an easy to fly to airport).

Hell, if anyone wanted to make the journey I'd taxi you out to Athens just to experience the town for myself.

Carter is right. Athens has about 40 bars in a 3 block by 3 block square. Food is typical college town with some finer dining for when parents are in town. 2 AM last call, no smoking in bars.

I will host all comers in my (almost) centrally located hobbit hole.

The last call does suck as they tend to kick people out about 5 minutes later. In Columbia, it often changes depending on if there is a football game or not. Another thing to hate about Mississippi, in Oxford....1 AM last call.

As far as smoking in bars, though, just about every bar has some kind of large patio connected (many with outside bars) where people go to smoke.

Not to my knowledge. Even ATL shuts down by 3am for the most part.

Bang-for-the-Buck southern city will be New Orleans no doubt. But, you won't get the pure college girl experience there (not sure how Tulane girls are, but I'd venture to say pale in comparison to the likes of UGA).

I can speak about Gainesville.
Midtown has a nice selection of bars to go to. It's real heavy on the Greek life. More college age crowd so things can get wild.

Downtown is def more of more diverse with clubs and bars. You will see college kids All the way to people in their 50s. Once you get downtown you can walk around. No need to cab once there.

The Swamp and 08 seconds are my favorite.
Smoking is not allowed in bars

It's a college town so expect a 2am curfew.

Most college cities will have indoor smoking bans in bars. I guess they are being progressive.

I'd venture to say bars closing in college towns (except large cities like Miami, ATL, NYC etc) close by 230am.

If you pick the right places (and this thread has done an excellent job of saying where those places are), you should absolutely go.

I haven't seen and mentions of places like Nashville, Memphis, cities in Kentucky besides Lexington, West Virginia, or Arkansas. I've never been to any of those places except to camp, so I'm not claiming they are good places to go - just wondering if they are.

Yeah seems like 2am is the standard for college towns. Austin TX and Carrolton, Ga have that time.

Atlanta was 4am till a few years ago. They changed that about the same time they tried to close down buckhead village (meat market.) The partying just moved 2 blocks north on roswell Rd... Its still pretty good on a Saturday though ratios didn't seem that great.

New Orleans is a college city with Bars that never close and open container laws!! Just carry your alcohol right onto the street from a bar at 6am !! I like that town, but I don't know that a dude not into hippy girls would be happy with the selection of locals.....

PresidentCarter - glad to drop a little information. And, I disagree with JohnKreese about downtown being dead after 5pm, that's not the case.

Places I would visit:

Rogue Tavern - downtown on 2nd Ave. North. Good live music joint, will be happening Friday on Sat.

Pale Eddy's Pour House - also on 2nd Ave. North, about 1/2 block from Rogue Tavern. Mainly a bar, but they have a small stage for music. Only been there once, but I liked it.

El Barrio - great Mexican food place, again on 2nd Ave. North. I've eaten here many times and the food is great, plus the bar is usually packed with a decent selection of women. I don't think it's a place to hang out per se, just a place to wait and drink while getting a table to eat.

Avondale Brewery - don't know the exact street address, but you can google their website. It's in the Avondale neighborhood of B'ham, which is a kind of up and coming neighborhood. Cool brewery, specializing in high gravity beers. Kind of a hipster place. They have music on the weekends. I like the beer.

Iron City - new bar, have not been to, hear good things about. It's on about 4th or 5th Ave. South, in the heart of downtown, about 7 blocks south of Rogue Tavern, Pale Eddy's, etc. I think it's mainly a live music joint. Looks cool.

Jackson's - restaurant/bar in the Homewood neighborhood of town, which is about 10 minutes south of downtown. Good beer selection. I would say the women in here are above average, but that's just my taste. Nice area to sit outside when the weather's nice (which is now).

Dram Whiskey Bar - upscale place (and upscale women). Social circle kind of place. Good talent, but tough to pull.

Hop City - have not been, but I hear there is a great selection of beer. I believe this is a chain out of Atlanta.

This could be the one.

Baton Rouge is nearly identical to New Orleans in its cuisine. Baton Rouge may even have more affordable quality restaurants than New Orleans, not high-end though. Baton Rouge doesn't have the higher density New Orleans provides to be conducive to walking/short cab rides. It's a drive-first kind of place. I don't know enough about the nightlife to bust out a datasheet though. I do know that there's attractive women everywhere during the day. It has outgrown its reputation as a college enclave and acts as more of an economic powerhouse. At any rate, Baton Rouge has females for days and with that comes things such as the highest HIV rate in 'Merica.

A major city that has some decent universities in it and also some good college towns around it is probably a good bet. I was thinking something like Miami could potentially be really good. South Florida is not considered "the South" because it has been heavily settled by Hispanic immigrants and Yankee retirees. "Southern" is a cultural/ethnic group that mainly stretches back to colonial Virginia and the Carolinas, and the people from there who founded towns across the rest of the South via the Wilderness Road, etc. The traditions are different and some people identify with it very strongly.

Believe me, it's not a "white" thing, it's a cultural thing. There are plenty of "Southern" blacks and Hispanics, but large parts of Florida just don't fit in with them anymore, and it can go both ways. Agree.

This probably applies to Orlando, Tampa, and everything south from there. Daytona Beach is Southern.

As for New Orleans, its not a college town. Its Southern, but small, and so Bourbon Street is mostly tourists. A Monday will be a very different experience than a weekend, and as mentioned before the summers are brutal so tourism slows.

Nashville is great but hotels are expensive and can be difficult during football season - NFL and Vanderbilt.

Athens is great but there are few hotels and they are next to impossible during football season if Georgia is in town. If Georgia is away, this is doable.

Auburn is about the same distance from Atlanta - probably closer when you consider traffic. Get a hotel reservation before you book your flights.

Tallahassee is top notch but probably the most difficult to fly to (small airport) and hotels will be difficult on a game weekend.

As far as sorority girls and the Greek fraternity system, I was a member and this is not the obstacle you think it is. First, at a school that has 40,000 students, maybe 10% are Greek. Second, there are plenty of hot girls that are not greek. Third, just wear something Polo/Ralph Lauren/Country Club looking. You don't need bow ties or sear sucker. They are looking for someone who can blend in in upper class circles, but actually belonging to a fraternity is not required (although it helps). The bigger obstacle is that you don't live there, and you are angling for a SNL. A similar obstacle is that while one of these girls may be attracted to you, they are very susceptible to peer pressure so you need to blaze a path where you can make this happen on the down low. Discretion is key. For example, I'm staying at x hotel, meet me at the bar there in 10 minutes. You leave. She tells her friends, I'm not feeling well, I'm going to take an Uber home (to X hotel, lol).
