Ordering cassette tapes from Columbia House, my older brother ordered Nirvana's Nevermind, Pearl Jam's Ten and Soundgarden's Bad Motor Finger (and others) in one shipment back in 92', I'm pretty sure that event changed my life. The early and mid 1990's were a great time to be a young kid and just getting into music, almost every other week an awesome album was coming out; alternative rock, rap/hip-hop, metal, etc.

I never went to one, but was begging my parents to take me to Lallapalooza in the 90's to see the bands which still remain some of my favorites: Cypress Hill, L7, Smashing Pumpkins, Rage Against The Machine, RHCP, Beastie Boys, etc.

I used to have a hard time understanding why my dad used to be so nostalgic for the 60's (he was born in 1949) and used to only listen to 60s music, drove a 1960 Chevrolet Bel-Air and a 1967 Camero and collected and traded 1950's/60's hockey cards, now that I'm older, I finally understand.

This is another piece of advertising brilliance (IMO anyway.) Hype Williams directed this ad for GAP that came out spring '99, and ran into the summer. That was an interesting summer for me.





Sugar Ray was popular at the same time.





This song was kind of interesting. When it was playing on the radio in '99, I was living in Myrtle Beach (I was there from '98-'02 for college.) I had a copy of the CD and when I visited at Thanksgiving I played it for one of my friends, and some of his buddies who lived in Baltimore. None of them had ever heard it, and they were all floored by it. I guess back then some music was still a little regional.

I think it was definitely a southern thing. It was big as far north and east as South Carolina, but not much above that. As I said, friends who lived in/around Baltimore had never heard it, or the overall style and sound. It's a stark contrast to today, where new music s released on the same day in every single market across the country with virtually no regional variation.
