When first meeting women in a casual setting, I give them a hug and peck on the cheek, european style.

In professional settings, Im more formal and opt for the handshake. Thumb up, palm vertical, firm grip, two shakes, release. A number of times, girls offer their right hand palm down, similar to how they show off an engagement ring. I see it, think "Does this lizard expect me to kiss her hand?" and proceed with the standard handshake.

Anyone else encounter this? Is it a misread on my part, or is there something else going on?

Reading too much into it. No chick in 2013 expects you to kiss her hand.

I hate introductions with American women since I spent a lot of time in South America. I feel like a dip shit shaking their hands, but when you go in for the kiss on the cheek, a lot of American women are dumb and think it's strange. Some of the only girls I've met that aren't socially awkward with the kiss on the cheek are New Yorkers. I feel strange shaking a girls hand at introduction.

Depends on the situation, if it's a professional situation keep it to a handshake.

If its casual social, why don't you take her hand and pull her in for a casual hug greeting?
