That would imply they are targeting Latinas in the US, which makes sense since they are a growing demographic.



I have boots on the ground in Mexico and so far the only feminist women (chopped off hair, manly attitudes) I have met were girls who spent their teenage years living in the US.

Truth be told, Latinas in the US are already a bunch of fat bitches with mucho attitude. The only ones that sometimes aren't have planet-sized egos because they're mad scarce or are between the ages of 16 and 18, and therefore illegal for you to holler at in most jurisdictions.

You're falling into the U.S trap of thinking South America is some homogeneous place. Argentines, Uruguayans and white Brazilians won't pay any notice of magazines like this, as they have no idea what a 'Latino' is. Yeah, it's weird and just shows how fucked up race relations are in America. Basically, white anglos in America will never look at a spanish speaking person as a fellow white person. They can have blue eyes, blonde hair and pale skin but he wont be considered white to them because of the spanish last name and language. Americans think all spanish speaking people are tied together (where the hispanic/latino label comes into play) which as you know, is not the case at all for a lot of countries.

"Messi" isn't even a Spanish last name, it's Italian. As that's what he is, an Italian Argentine, like thousands of others. Another one that makes me laugh is Marco Rubio, he looks exactly the same as some buttoned-up white middle-American (which, of course he is) and yet in every article I read they go on about his being this non-white saviour of the Republicans. It's insanity.

Pretty much all of the Argentines that are in the NBA are of Italian ancestry, and played professionally in the Italian league as well as for the Argentine National Team. Manu Ginobili, Fabricio Oberto, Luis Scola, Andres Nocioni, Carlos Delfino and Pablo Prigioni all have Italian surnames. Pepe Sanchez, who played college ball at Temple and played a couple of years in the league is the only Argentine player of note that had a Latin surname.

So are French names. So I guess that makes Italians and French non-white.

It's always a relief to hear from people that understand the complexity of race in Latin America. Most Americans, even the Latinos here are clueless about it.

To be fair to the otherwise trite article, the article's position is Messi will resonate only to the extent that Soccer is popular with 'hispanic' America, which is not unreasonable. They compare Messi's relevance in the US to Kobe Bryant's relevance in Europe.

That is: Kobe Bryant is one of the best, most recognizable basketball players in the world. He'll resonate with European basketball fans regardless of their cultural background or ethnicity. Messi will resonate with soccer fans in the US regardless of their cultural background or ethnicity, and soccer tends to be popular with the growing Latin American population-- who have many differences but all tend to enjoy soccer more than the average American.

It really doesn't seem that strange to me. From the perspective of a typical American, their language and willingness to share in the same cultural activities is how connections are made. Should Americans really be expected to care how many different subcultures are at the Latino bar watching soccer and the Spanish-language broadcast of the Yankee game?

Americans think all Spanish-speaking people are tied together because, to the extent it matters to a typical American, they are.
