My bed sucks and I dont want to buy new on, but build one myself. Any of you guys have some experience and can offer some tips?

Make sure to build it sturdy. I broke my bed last summer because it was made of cheap materials.

Yeah make sure it is sturdy. I had a friend who decided to take an extremely fat woman to bed and halfway through fucking, the damn bed collapsed. Hilarious moment, but for a moment I was worried for his safety.

I used like forty bucks worth of stud grade 2x4s and some recycled slats to build a loft bed. It's pretty easy if you have the tools.

I have built a couple beds.

How comfortable are you with woodworking? Is it a loft, or a regular bed? What size is the mattress?

Basically making a bed out of a sturdy bookshelf. Not much carpentry skill required.

You ever consider hitting up the good will? The one down the street from were I live has some bad ass furniture. I had never been to a good will before. My friends have said it's the nicest one they've been to. Most of them got most of their furniture there and it looks good. The sofa we have in our living room is from the good will and it's clean, nice, and mad comfy.

I got really rough and wild with a girl a few years ago which resulted in my bed frame and the wall next to the bed getting damaged. Apparently ikea wood frames can only handle so much...

I think a man should be able to built some basic stuff with his hands, plus, most of the IKEA beds are made of some cheap as wood and don't last too long.
I've already built some other furniture and I like to work with wood, so it's not primarily about saving money, but more about the process/challenge itself.

I 2nd that. $100 for a bed at Ikea. You will end up spending way too much time building and it may break while you have sex on it. (It's happened to me; kind of awkward)

Or you can just get a metal frame and put a mattress on it. Metal frames are $40 or less.

You just need a tape measure, jigsaw, screw gun and some 3" inch screws.
2x4's or 2x6's work just fine.

Find some pictures online of other beds to get some design ideas.

I'd never buy a used bed, mattress or frame. Too many horror stories about the creepy-crawlies which came with them.
Someone with carpentry skills should post a link to building a cheap bed.
But it's the mattress cost that kill you. I'm a big guy (6'2", too much fat) and every time I walk into Sleepy's the sales staff eyes light up with $$$ signs.

Get some quality wood from Home Depot or Lowes, get it cut there and all you need to assemble it is a drill (aka electric screwdriver) and/or a hammer and nails. You can build it as sturdy (4x4s) or as light as you like.

But it won't come apart quite so easily. However, once it does come apart, its easier to put back together than Ikea stuff since you can just drill new holes.

I'm sure you'll get lots of results if you google DIY bed.
