What do you guys think is a good start for socks?

Buy a few pairs of solid coloured socks?

I figure buying the versatile, neutral colours are no brainers (gray, black, brown, navy), but now that it is spring/summer (at least for me) I feel it is possible to work in some oranges, lighter greens, shades of red etc.

The easiest and first step is to wear only black socks. They go with practically every shoe and can be worn at the gym. They also set you apart from the majority of the crowd wearing white socks.

This thread inspired me to start a whole new fashion project - building a new wardrobe. I wrote about it in detail on my blog, but it's safe to say I went out and bought some new clothes today, including 4 pairs of socks - 2 black, 2 - gray.

Yeah, this thread is making me want to throw out my remaining white socks. Outside of maybe having some white ankle socks to wear with shorts (with shoes that go with them since I'm tan it would show up good against my skin tone), I really see no reason to have white socks ever.

I've been slowly transitioning into wearing ONLY thin black socks. Dress socks and thin ankle/low cut athletic socks. I've been doing this buy only buying this type of sock so my white socks have worn out when I've used them and I will eventually only have one sock drawer.

The thin/dress sock type material is way better to let my feet breathe and not be stinky at the end of the day. Of course, I kick my shoes off nearly anywhere I stop. Comfortable as fuck to not wear shoes and just be kicking back in your socks.

I don't think I've ever actually driven a car with shoes on that's not on the race track come to think of it.

As far as the gym or summertime and shorts, I wear white ankle socks...mainly because I wear white or mostly white sneakers. I don't sandals so I still have use for white socks.

I also wear white t-shirts under most of my shirts....except that I wear white v-neck t-shirts so it doesn't show. Any sweat, hits that t-shirt.

As far as "standing out". Are you "standing out" for the purpose of attracting chicks or trying to show other dudes that you can stand out? For one, I would only attempt to "stand out" if there were some chicks in the balance and two....as I get older, you don't need to stand out as much if you have money.

I'm not a big guy, - six feet tall when I'm not slouching, and years of intense cardio has left me rail thin. I use my clothes to enhance my presence. I'm a young black guy who lives in the inner city (when I'm stateside), if I dress like shit I find that no matter how "proper" I speak, no matter how yuppy of a car I drive, no matter how many white people I'm with, people still see me as a thug. I dress nice and suddenly I'm a respectable young man who overcame the obstacles in his way.

My appearance has an impact on how I'm treated everywhere I go. Walk into a bank wearing a hoodie and torn jeans while asking to see the manager and see how long you wait, try it again with a shirt and tie and see how quick your problems get taken care of. People tend to assume that if a man can dress himself properly, he's smart and capable of other things, too.

I wear mismatched clothes thrown together and I'm some punk. I take care of my appearance and my chances of being the next Trayvon Martin decrease drastically. Standing out is a matter of having an edge in social situations.

I should also note that I like to stand out because I'm a vain, egotistical mother fucker. One day, many years ago there was a little boy who went to prom and got more compliments on his suit than his girlfriend got on her dress. That day a fashionista was born.

I love getting compliments on how I'm dressed. My day is made every time someone stops me at the grocery store says, "Wow, you're dressed nice!"

The traditional way to do it is:

For slacks dress pants: wear socks that are the same colour as the pants.

For jeans, khakis. chinos wear socks that match your shoes.


Again, actually socks should not be noticed. The pictures above are attempts as introducing socks as a fashion accessory. If that's your thing fair enough, it's as hipster as you can get though.

Also top priority for me with socks is are they comfortable/not full of elastic. I've never tried wearing tennis socks with dress shoes... I don't even see how that can work, since tennis socks feel like bathtowels and my shoes won't fit anymore. Argyle are fine as long as it's not an official function /only smart casual dresscode.

The funniest shit is when people wear white socks with a suit!

We had this Mustafa-looking fucker turn up at the office a few weeks back. Nasty Muslim beard, and these hilarious white socks poking out from the ankle. If any of my workmates turned up with white socks, they'd never hear the end of it.

Cool socks are sweet, but I think just like white shoes have a place in my arsenal of style, so do white socks. They're nothing special, but they're standard and in no way look bad.

Eh, not really that crazy, but in my current job I occasionally get the opportunity to drive someone else's race cars on the track. I've driven on HPDE days (shared track days where you can get timing and the advanced run groups have open passing) with my own sports car on R-compound tires, big brakes, coilover suspension, etc... and have also been fortunate enough to drive other people's race cars on exclusive track days (where it's the whole track to just this one client and his cars and his friends driving, so once they're done he sometimes offers to have me turn some laps).

Puts a shit eating grin on my face every time.

Some of the race cars are more expensive than others, but they are all fucking fun as hell. I do love the feeling of being in a caged race car turning laps and being on the edge of grip, but it's also a little nerve-racking being responsible for someone else's 6 figure race car, especially if it's near the end of a long day working and you're tired. This one client has also thrown me the keys to a brand new Aston Martin and told me I could go drive around the block a few times to check it out and I just threw him the keys back and told him I'd drive it another time. The customer that was with me dropped his jaw to the floor that I turned it down. I told him I've driven a lot of cool cars and I was fucking busy at the time, I'm sure I'd get another opportunity. I did. I think the client respected me a lot more that I turned him down.

I wear a lot of Bugatchi socks with my suits. Usually I try to match the socks to my shirt.





You can find more conservative designs as well, but even those will stand out in some way.

I give off somewhat of a conservative ex-military vibe so these serve as a good contrast to my demeanor.

What about gray? It's fairly similar to white. Most of my socks are gray, with a few black. None are patterned like these. The only combination I would feel uncomfortable wearing would be white (or gray) socks with black shoes. There is a social stigma around that as it looks "peasant-like".

It's just a matter of taste and opinion. If you play ball then you can wear white socks. Actually, if you showed up to ball in ankle socks you would get laughed off of the court.
