Any surfers out there?
Just thought i post a really gnarly surf video from Hawaii I came across. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1s7eZ4yVmXE

I got into surfing when I lived in Hawaii, certainly not on the level of the North Shore, but I started getting really good. I really miss it, I'm hoping to do some surfing this summer.

Its amazing the balls these big wave surfer guys have.

Any surfers on rooshv?

I'm living in NY now, i heard Rockaways get good in September, any NY guys surf Rockaway or LI?

started surfing about a year back. it's harder to learn for me because I'm afraid of reef-breaks and stay with beach breaks only... which only offers a very short ride.

The Jersey shore gets a bad rap, but it has some solid spots within a reasonable distance from NY. Look into Deal, The Pit in Long Branch, Belmar, Manasquan, etc.

Here's proof Jersey goes off: local swell

There are quit a few surfers on the forum. G Manifesto and Kona are some that come to mind. I enjoy surfing. I'm not great, only been maybe ten times, but I enjoy all board sports. I'm a snowboarder myself, but if I lived by a beach that had waves, I'd be going all the time.

Been surfing for a couple of years. Not great surf in my new local but I still get out a few times a week.

There are a lot of lessons to be learned about Game in surfing. There will always be another wave but if you don't go for it you wont catch it.

Many people consider Manasquan to have the best waves in the state and Brigantine to have the worst.

Get over that fear.

Reefbreaks come in many flavors. Some are shallow and sharp. Others are deep and slow. Most are safer than beachbreaks at equivalent size, for a couple reasons:

1. With the exception of slabs, beachbreak sandbars tend to suck out and dump harder than reefs, in shallower water. People die or get seriously injured at a handful of places surfing: Pipe, Teahupo'o, those retard Aussie slabs, or beachbreaks. Your local reef hasn't killed or crippled anybody in decades. Unless it's one of the above.

2. Reefs break more consistently in the same spot, because the reef doesn't move. Beachbreaks catch you inside.

3. Reefs often have channels. Beachbreaks don't. Channels are safe.

4. Beachbreaks often have more vicious currents, including rips, due to the lack of a defined water path through shallows and channels.

5. Reefbreaks can handle a lot more energy safely. Long-period swell will turn a beach dangerous. Reefs will peel.

You should be more afraid of the people surfing the reefbreak than the bottom itself.

The deeper water you're in the safer you are.

You're not going to hit bottom. Until you do. Then it hurts a lot less than you think. And it happens WAY more frequently at beaches.

RE: Any surfers out there?
Were around here. G Man has started several threads.

Seems like the only decent mix of waves and pussy in the States is SoCal, but this always leads people to either look for more consistent waves or more consistent girls.

Sounds like youre stuck on the east coast probably Mid-Atlantic region. Check out swellinfo.com and poke around. Hurricane season is starting up in less than a month and some good stuff rolls through now and then.

Wasn't half bad out in MD this weekend. Chest high on Sat. Shitty compared to when I lived in SoCal but you gotta do what you gotta do on the East Coast.
