Can someone who believes in the space ship thing explain to me one thing?

Why would aliens come all the way here, not introduce their selves, and turn on all their lights on in the dark while trying to stay hidden, and then leave? Can come one explain that one to me because I don't understand.

watch the history channel's ancient alien series, there's a lot of hot air but it's thought provoking at the very least.

My 'religion' (i say this as I don't follow it) has a long history, longer than any of the other major religions at present. I've read it all, stories from the past, history of the ancestral land and some of the myths really would gain historical plausibility from alien contact in ancient times. I'm very skeptical on this as I am on the religion itself, there's a lot that seems too fairy tale like for me, and I've always explained the polytheism of it away by suggesting the reason for many gods was that the common man needed his own god.

God of Rain/Weather - Farmer
God of strength - blacksmith
Goddess of household/wealth - housewife
The Preserver - Doctors, healers, faith

crop fields are dry, here's a drough and you need rain? Pray to the god of rain

Maybe there's more to it, I've not been able to explain Mohenjo Daro though until I decided to look into it on the back of this thread.

http://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Mohenjo-daro

Thanks a lot, put that radiation to bed.

(04-19-2013 08:29 PM)cardguy Wrote:  There is no doubt life in many places throughout the universe. But - there is probably no intelligent life.

This planet has had about 100 billion different types of species throughout it's history. Not sure where I read that - but I remember the figure.

And only 3-4 of them ever developed any type of higher intelligence (I am thinking of the precursors to modern humans who eventually became extinct). And only one of them (modern humans) has developed sophisticated culture, science and technology.

So - it seems to me you will have to pass over billions of different planets containing life - before you find one which evolved a species as intelligent as our own. And that is if you are lucky...

Life is probably not rare in the universe. But intelligence probably is.

That logic is flawed. Think about it this way: We know of one planet that contains life, on that planet there is intelligent life. Therefore there is a 100% chance of intelligent life given a planet that harbors life.

Now of course that logic is flawed too, as our sample size is only 1, the earth.

But your thinking seems to assume that a planet capable of life will only host one form of life (you claim billions of species on earth to produce one intelligent form, so you would have to find billions of planets containing life before you found an intelligent one).

If earth can host billions of species throughout history, than any planet with similar conditions should be able to as well. And then its just of matter of evolution and luck.

Furthermore, you can get into the time frame of evolution. If an intelligent species evolved only 1,000 years before us (blink of an eye) and evolved at the same rate, well...we can only imagine where they would be technologically.

To any level headed common sense oriented person, the presence of intelligent life other than ours makes as much sense as 2+2=4. The question of visitation and contact is a completely different topic.

The event that interests me the most is the one of some russian mountain climbers that disappeared from their camp site. Their tents were found torn to shreds from the inside, and their bodies were found burned and half naked far from their camp as if they just jumped out of their sleeping bags in the middle of the night and ran for the treeline. Im not sure of the exact details, but it is some real creepy stuff.

edit - just researched that russian incident, this page seems to offer a pretty plausible explanation (http://www.cracked.com/article_16671_6-f...ons.html).

Life is probably not rare in the universe. But intelligence probably is.

"Rare" is relative. Keep in mind that there are 200 billion stars in the Milky Way, and it's pretty much a given at this point that there are more planets than stars. Let's say the average star has 5 planets in orbit around it. That's a trillion planets in this galaxy alone. And there are hundreds of billions of galaxies in the observable universe. That's observable, there are probably more beyond what we can image with current technology. Now multiply one trillion by 200 billion observable galaxies. You'd get this number of planets: 200,000,000,000,000,000,000,000. If only one in a million planets were earth-like worlds, you would have this many earths out there: 200,000,000,000,000,000, and if only 1 in thousand earth-like planets had intelligent life you'd have: 200,000,000,000,000 intelligent alien races. Yeah, there's definitely gotta be something out there.

Have you ever looked at the Drake equation? It's not perfect, but it's an algorithm that gives you some framework for predicting the amount of intelligent life in the galaxy. By the most conservative numbers, there could be as many as 1,000 civilizations in the Milky Way. If that's the case, that would make civilizations staggeringly rare relative to the number of planets, but 1,000 is still a lot of civilizations in the absolute sense. I believe without a doubt there's both primitive and more advanced civilizations out there.

I was gonna mention the drake equation. This shit is mad interesting to me. Here's a cool video Carl Sagan does on it..

I think he also makes some pretty good points about UFOs in his book, "The Demon Haunted World." Basically he states that he believes there are probably many other intelligent life forms in the universe, but he doesn't believe they have come to earth, and definitely doesn't believe they've come to earth to anal probe people. He makes some really good arguments. The dude is a genius (And even a stoner at that).

That's got nothing to do with UFOs. That's just the effect of the rocket hitting sunlight once it climbs above the earth's shadow area. Hard to explain. But I've seen this same exact thing here in California when rockets are fired from Vandenburg Air Force base. It's very interesting to look at because it looks like the birth of s star or something, but it's nothing out of the ordinary. This effect usually happens when a rocket is launched not long after sunset.

I've also seen this in Nevada. It freaked me the fuck out until we watched the news and found out what it was all about.

You should watch the trailer, it looks promising, Joe rogan had an entire podcast on it, that shit will blow your mind.

There is life out there, there has always been, just the simple fact that We exist is a proof of life in the Cosmos

We live on a small blue ball that is like a grain of sand on a beach compare to the Cosmos and we have elephants, whale, birds, lizards, lions, gorillas, giraffes and much more.

The amount of variety of life on Earth is already ridiculous, an elephant looks as alien to me as it gets, its a huge grey creature with horns sticking out of it's face, I'm some sort of monkey with carbon fibers sticking out of his head.

If you just close your eyes and look at earth as if you are out in space and zooming in to see what is here, the amount of difference and strangeness is ridiculous.
Denying the existence of intelligence life out there appears to me as a lack of logic.
You can watch/stream the movie here. Looks pretty cheesy to be honest

Just finished watching Sirius, great documentary

It's probably the best documentary focusing on free energy and alien life out there at the moment.

that little being in the trailer is not a hoax, they analyze it at Stanford and show exactly what it is all about.
There is no proof that it is alien but it is indeed a real being with DNA, now the conclusion made by the Stanford Professor who took the time to analyze and send the DNA samples to the top guys in that area is that it might be some sort of mutation but there is no proof of that.

the being is 6 inches tall and appear to have died around the age of 7, it appears to be a female due to the Y chromosomes found in it's DNA .

I don't think I have ever seen a 6 inches tall 7 year old female, but hey what do I know.

It does begin looking a bit cheesy, but it is not.

It wasn't mind blowing or anything like that to me because I already knew most of the stuff covered on there, but as usual they only scraped the tip of the iceberg and didn't really go deep.

Have you guys ever heard of Lloyd Pye and his "starchild" skull? I've heard a few interviews with this guy and it's pretty fascinating. He has this skull that was found in a pre-Colombian mine tunnel in Mexico, there was a human mother that had her arms wrapped around this smaller skeleton(which he calls the child). It's as if they committed suicide or something because they apparently both died at the same time. The starchild skull doesn't look human at all and they are trying to figure out where it's DNA comes from. I don't know what this is of if it will turn out proven to be an alien, but it's one of those fascinating stories I keep an eye on for updates:

Yep I watched some of his stuff a while back, here are some paintings and sculptures of Akhenaten, the pharaoh of the eighteenth Dynasty of Egypt and his daughters.

He is known for changing the art of Egypt, meaning that he forced painters and sculptors to draw and paint stuff as they appeared in reality, so a painting of a bird had to look like the bird, just like we paint stuff today.

here is an example:

Now take a look at a painting of his daughters

Sculptures of his daughters

interesting isn't it?

This is his statue, Egyptians during that time Had to sculpt and draw everything as they appear for real, now I'm 6 feet and apparently my head would be at the waist of the statue and you can see he has wide hips, a belly and a long neck.

what is the mainstream explanation of this? he probably had a bone disease.
Here is another painting of him and I think Nefertiti and one of their daughters,

The shit that went down in Egypt was so out of this world, I don't think we can even comprehend it.

I don't want to sound cheesy and I am quiet a skeptic person but some stuff are quite obvious.

Yeah like the other guys said the logic doesn't quite follow on that one. It's more about what chance an Earth-like planet will develop life atall, then what chance that life will evolve to be intelligent, etc... all we have with our earth is an n=1 case.

The Drake equation is a starting point, but we really just don't know how "likely" life is. Intelligent life on earth could be an absolute miracle or there could be a significant chance of it developing on any earth-like planet.

What really fascinates me is our very specific definition of life. Life on earth went down one very particular path (self-replicating DNA in the primordial soup). What if there could be other self-replicating phenomenon subject to natural selection? Doesn't have to be molecular, maybe it could be some sort of EM wave pattern or turbulence in gas clouds. Imagine if THAT shit was the basis for intelligent life. Intelligent beings of pure EM energy, or of gas movement? It'd be far beyond our two-legs-two-arms-and-a-brain paradigm.

The shit that went down in Egypt was so out of this world, I don't think we can even comprehend it.

I don't want to sound cheesy and I am quiet a skeptic person but some stuff are quite obvious.

Or maybe he just wanted to be seen as superior to others? There are so many different ways you could interpret it. If you ask me, this picture says nothing about aliens or anything skeptical at all. There could be hundreds of reasons why the paintings were like this.

RE: Two Earth-Sized Planets with Earth-Like Temperatures Discovered by Kepler
Some good working assumptions for these types of conversations.

1. Earth is not special. Earth-like planets may be rare, but other earth-like planets are not very different from earth. Life on other earth-like planets is not significantly different from life on earth.

2. This follows from 1. Humans are not special. Intelligent life is probably rare, but other civilized intelligent life will be quite similar to humans.

3. The galaxy is in equilibrium. If we do not detect advanced intelligent life in our galaxy, it is either because we are not searching in the right way or it has not progressed to the point that it is detectable by us.

1,2 and 3 lead to the conclusion that civilizationally advanced intelligence is very rare in the universe assuming that we are looking for it in the right ways.

I've got the dick so I make the rules.

I was with you 100%, right up to number 3. Undecided

To say that the universe operates in a state of equilibrium--at least as far as technological progress of it's civilization(s)--can only be an assumption as we are in no position to know this and most likely won't be able to for as the galaxy is FUCKING HUGE. Laugh

We could guess that we've not found any other intelligent Civilizations yet because:

-The universe is huge and they're either in an area of our [already very limited] night sky that we've not checked yet OR

-our technology is not yet sophisticated enough to detect their civilization in what ever their current state is (this and the a fore mentioned point work both ways) OR

-they are sufficiently advanced and
a) just don't care about our insignificant species
b) haven't found us yet as THE GALAXY IS FUCKING HUGE
c) have found us and decided that rather than make proper first contact they wanna stick cold metal batons up our rectums.

I don't why you would say intelligent life will be similar to humans. Let's say they're pretty much the same as us except everyone has 3 nipples BUT their life got started a few thousand years before us. That's a long time beat us in technology. Who knows...
