Let's play devil's advocate: from the point of football wages (in relation to number of goals, assists, stats, etc), it is Ronaldo and Messi who are overpriced. Their results are marginally better when compared to other high-powered but not extremely-high-priced players in European clubs, but not that much better. Most of this excess value is just a result fame and fixation of the football community, and they have not done any additional work or displayed additional talents to earn it.

By comparison, Beckham is paid much less for his football achievements (rightfully so - his results are just above average at best), but he supplements it by working on his fashion lines, marketing, careful public image management. This doesn't mean that I prefer him as either a person, marketer or football player, but he is the one who earned his vast fortune more.

Beckham is a style icon who managed to make himself a household name in the biggest market in the world: USA. Of course he is gonna be worth more than the other two overall.

As for his playing ability I actually think he was underrated as a player and a lot better than people give him credit for. It was just so easy to bash him because of his public profile and he was in your face all the time.

As for him as a player, I feel sorry for the Americans that were duped into thinking they were getting the world's best - that said, he was pretty damn good in his prime. He's still decent now, and I still don't think there is a better crosser of the ball around.

As for Ronaldo and Messi, we should be happy that we are seeing possibly the two best ever in our lifetimes. What they've done to the scoring stats is simply unbelievable, and they're so consistent. The Brazilian Ronaldo could have been the best ever had it not been for injuries. If I was the Portugese Ronaldo, I'd be so angry at having to be in the same era as Messi, as without him he'd be cleaning up the awards every year!

Ronaldo is better than Messi. Messi is great with a team like Barcelona, but didn't do as good with Argentina.

As an American fan who follows soccer, and MLS a bit, I think most American fans understood exactly what they were getting with Beckham -- a pretty good player whose main role for the league was as a marketing icon.

That being said, I watched quite a few games that Beckham played, and I thought he was always among the top dozen players in the league throughout his time with the Galaxy. His ball striking skill, both in the run of play and on set pieces, was still tops, and his vision was clearly a cut above most players. Of course, he didn't have the athletic dynamism he had when he was younger -- after all, he was in his late 30s -- but he could still move well enough.

In a roundabout way I can't reveal here, I have some interesting connections with the Galaxy, and have heard quite a bit about Beckham and his character from those close to the team. To wit.

--He keeps himself in phenomenal physical shape. He works out hard.
--He loves loves LOVES to play. He'd play in a reserve game if they asked him. He'll be playing pickup when he's 45.
--He is a man's man. He has this rep as a metrosexual, but he is still a bottom a tough London kid.
--He is super competitive. Hates to lose at anything.
--He loves the camaraderie of a team. He'll joke around, but at the same time, training is deadly serious to him.

Even Landon Donovan, who if you recall didn't think much of David when he first came, came around to thinking he was a great teammate.

Finally, what you see with Beckham in his public persona is what you get privately. Not the sharpest tool in the shed, but a generally good guy who is pretty nice to everybody, but who would cut your heart out to win a football game.

Yeah I really like Beckham, or at least what I've seen of him. Good guy, takes care of his family etc. I would be interested to see how a Messi or a Ronaldo would do in the MLS actually. Would they completely destroy teams on their own etc?

Yes, If they were to go the MLS and were provided with the requisite support from their fellow team mates. They would annihilate the MLS !
Similar to the same way Neymar is killing it in the brazilian league with much weaker defenders compared to in Europe.

The difference between the standard of play in the MLS in comparison to top leagues in Europe is massive. If those teams were to play over here, they would be in the 2nd/3rd division based on what I've seen.






Also many guys like to hate on David Beckham as if he was an average footballer player or something and doesn't have the right to be up their with the greatest.
This is completely false, Becks was a dead ball specialist and scored goals with pin point accuracy. His compilation is so much better to watch than the majority of big names out there. He was a classy player in his time.

Not to mention, He's a good looking fella and down to earth guy who loved his club which elevated his fame tenfold.
