Today at work, we were forced to watch "The Invisible War" as part of our annual mandatory sexual harassment training. For those who don't know, The Invisible War tackles the problem of sexual assault in the US military and features several victims who were raped while serving

As I sat through this, I remember thinking (besides the fact that it was long and boring) that it was rather one sided, and intentionally trying to provoke an emotional response from people. Towards the end, it shows the victims trying to sue Donald Rumsfeld and Robert Gates, and states that the court dismissed the case based on the grounds that "Rape is an occupational hazard of serving in the US Military"...At this point I heard many audible gasps.

So after the movie, we had an open discussion. Everyone who spoke was quite emotional and many expressed outrage. They were shocked...shocked at what they had just seen...But I was skeptical.

Afterwards, I did some research. I found that among other inaccuracies , the whole "occupational hazard" quote was complete bullshit. The court actually dismissed the lawsuit because military members cannot sue the military in civilian court.

Now I'm not saying that rape isn't a problem..because it is. I despise it and anyone who would do it. .. However what really bothered me most about the whole thing was that everyone seemed to accept everything that was presented without really ever asking themselves "Is this information correct?"

Rape is a complicated issue. Its always one person's word against the others..... It has been around since the beginning of time and most likely will continue to be.. However films like this won't solve the problem. Instead it just emotionally charges the issue. The film's solution seems to call for more aggressive prosecution of accused rapists in the military....but it doesn't really address the fact that it would also lead to more people who are falsely accused of rape, and that is dangerous.

I find it interesting how western govrnment are fighting to eradicate sexual violence in war. Surely being shot by a 50cal bullet is a bit worse than being raped: apparently not.

While I am highly sensitive to the females who are unfortunately subjected to any sexual abuse, I sat through that movie and I wasn't convinced that sexual abuse is any more rampant in the military as it is anywhere else. I guess it was a lot of emotional appeal and too little facts

While I think that having to say rape is an issue for woman in the military is little than projection on the part of feminists - they swept sexual assault against men under the rug.

I have no doubt that some men do ignore the issue, but I seriously doubt they do simply because they don't care about female rape victims - they may just be complete narcissists, may have economic reasons or their political/military ambitions that would get tainted by the allegations.

However, this ends my (somewhat) agreement. I think this is where feminists find some imperfections, and use that to justify a vast overhaul - like at the university level - that results in basically a kangaroo civilian court that fucks men over; feminists always need to avoid criminal courts because of the Constitution.

Further, the comments on one of the articles cited by ToySoldier really wanted to stress that rape is about "power and control." One of the top comments stated this "was the first step." Really. Why? How does that change how rape in the military is seen?

I think it is because so then already attribute a motive to the accused to allow for easier disposition of the cases - i.e. he is skeptical of women in the military, so he used rape to try to exclude women from the military; or he made some off-color sexual remarks - it makes it easier to prove cases if military assumes motive out of the gate.

I seriously hope the US military doesn't seriously need a competent force ever again - because all this women in the military bullshit will blow up in America's face.

While I was in Kuwait, I think there were about 8 rape. 4 of them were male on male. Marines are crazy. The pitbulls and shitheads of our military.

Yeah, its inconceivable to me how a group of guys could be all agree "Hey, you see that guy over there? Lets fucking RAPE him"

The real problem with the military these days is that they cage up trained alpha killers for months at a time in places where they have no outlet.... No alcohol. No pussy. This is a fairly new concept as historically soldiers always seemed to have access alcohol and pussy.

I wonder how low the rate of sexual assault would drop if they openly allowed brothels on military bases...

True. I always wondered that. In Iraq, the little pinyas massuses used to fuck the soldiers. Then they get caught and get sent back. Sex is an outlet for us. Even in Kuwait soldiers who aren't stationed in Kuwait cant really get off post. So you are looking at the same pussy all the time until the next unit comes. Once the next unit hits, all hell breaks lose until all the military lizards are taken. Half the time most are taken before they hit ground. Its tough out there. There are only so many TCNs to go around.

They say the male on male rapes is for show of power or punishment. Usually the one who does it is the most alpha out the group/unit. I wonder what goes through their minds.
