I still don't understand this whole "mustache tattoo on hand" thing.
Can someone break this down for me?
Every time I see it, it makes me want to mix battery acid and heroin and shoot it in my veins.
(I have yet to see it with my own eyes in real life, but I have seen it on the internet one too many times).
Come to think of it, I still don't really get what a "hipster" is.
Can someone tackle that one too?
I am trying to stay relevant over here.
Lol man that's kind of hard to explain if you're older or don't see them around all the time. Hipsters are people that try very hard to be "ironic" and like different types of goofy shit to be "different" and "unique". Examples would be wearing Where's Waldo glasses, grandpa fedora hats, stretching their earlobes, getting retarded tattoos such as a sliced open avocado (I actually seen someone with this tonight), growing huge mustaches that curl up on the ends, listening to 1940's music and also lil Wayne, drinking the cheapest hobo beer because it's cool to be poor, shopping at thrift stores to be "cool". It would be no problem if one person did this with no influence from anyone else but they ALL look the exact same, listen to the same shit and look down on people who don't follow these dumb trends.

This definitely helps.
But I still don't really "get" what a hipster is.
Like for instance, back in the 90's, Ravers at least stood for something; they ushered in E-tabs, liked Techno and wanted love and peace for everyone and to break down social barriers.
Say what you will, but they actually accomplished that for a while.
I don't get what hipsters are trying to accomplish?
What drugs are they into?
What is there world view?
Is there a unifying agenda?
How do girls even like them?
Are they even straight?
What the f*ck are "hipsters"?
And what the hell is that tattoo mustache thing?

I don't think anything so unified as other famous counter-cultures. Hipsters aren't really a movement. They're just there. Typically whites in their 20s and 30s with middle-class, college-educated backgrounds who either work in technology or at Starbucks, and are defined primarily by their ennui, intellectual bent, and creative/artsy rejection of mainstream fashion.
Quote:What drugs are they into?
My impression is that hipsters relationship with drugs is shared with others with similar socio-economic status.
Quote:What is their world view?
Mainstream culture is shallow and ignorant.
Quote:Is there a unifying agenda?
I don't think so. To be a hipster basically just means having a critical mass of the various hipster traits.
Quote:How do girls even like them?
Aloof, superior contemptuous attitudes. Narcissism. Moodiness. Creativity and intellectualism. Dark humor. Elaborate, unconventional fashion.

RE: New High School Trend - Hallway Swimming
I think wikipedia has a thorough a breakdown: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hipster_%28...culture%29
I don't think there's any one trait that defines someone as a "hipster", but the more and more of the traits you have, then the more likely you are to be one. Like in that photo above, that guy with the white the brim hat, vneck, curly mustache, tight jeans and fixed gear bike is as hipster as you can get(though he'd never call himself one, he'd say, "I don't conform to labels"). Though of course just wearing v-neck and tight jeans in and of itself doesn't make you a hipster, nor does riding a fixed gear bike. Now throw in the mustache, a couple ironic tattoos and an Ipod cranking Animal Collective and now we're moving into hipster zone.
Edit --
You can now buy, yes buy fingerstache kits:
https://www.google.com/search?q=fingerst...0&bih=1030
The miracle of capitalism. It finds a market for everything. Iphone and instagram account to post the photo to are not included.

Most of them are very liberal, feminist and pro gay but at the same time they don't seem to give a shit about activism. Most hipsters wouldn't be caught dead calling themselves "hipsters." That's just the name that people outside that group have labeled people who fit a certain aesthetic, lifestyle and mindset. They are a tough bunch to really put a rope around and just like any trend, not everybody will have all the stereotypical hipster traits. Am I a hipster? I like plaid shirts and indie rock and craft brew. But I'm not into all the lame irony and blue pill political views, or wanting to be skinny with tight jeans.
I don't worry about what to call myself. And I don't think they do either.
The more I read hear the less I understand.
I mentioned Ravers because that is an often misunderstood group.
But think about Hippies, Skinheads, Mods, Greasers etc. They all were relatively easy to define and you know were they were coming from.
Hipsters just confuse the hell out of me.
The funny thing is, I go to some hipster restaurants and some hipster joints. I never really have a conversation with any of the super hipstered out ones.
And I really don't understand the whole "ironic" thing.
Hell, I am still not even sure I know what "irony" really is.

RE: New High School Trend - Hallway Swimming
This may sound overly dramatic, but Hipsterism is actually a subculture defined by cowardice and fear. This is why it has gained such traction in the decade of the 2000s, which was dominated by 9/11, two wars and two financial crashes. Hipsters are a direct response to the culture of fear and uncertainty we've been living in.
Rather than forcing themselves to commit to an actual belief system of any type, hipsters hide behind irony as an excuse to avoid making a decision. They're terrified of being judged, so they essentially take themselves out of the game before it even begins. This is why they dress like complete shit, cover themselves with tattoos and piercings and grow ridiculous looking facial hair. In a way, it's a nihilistic lifestyle, because they stand for absolutely nothing. But it's not because they actually believe in nothing, just that they're far too afraid and apathetic to actually take a stand for anything.
This is why, despite their inane ramblings about being unique, hipsters are the ultimate conformists. Their greatest fear is to be singled out and judged, so they go to great lengths to dress and act like everyone else in the crowd. Their emphasis on "ironic posturing" is their ultimate fallback. If a hipster does face criticism, they can immediately save face by claiming that you don't understand their ironic expression, and must be stupid or out of touch.

That is maybe the best explanation I have ever heard.
I still don't really know what "irony" is though.
I even looked up the definition:
Irony: a pretense of ignorance and of willingness to learn from another assumed in order to make the other's false conceptions conspicuous by adroit questioning —called also Socratic irony.

This is actually a really good breakdown. They're afraid of actually believing in anything or committing to anything. Therefore, the response is "none of this shit matters, so let's just make ourselves look as stupid as possible." Past subcultures tried to be creative or subversive, but they're defined by showing how cool it is to not give a shit about anything.
Interesting point, I saw an article a few weeks ago that talked about how companies like American Apparel and Urban Outfitters were basically planting bloggers and people at events to create hipster trends and make sure their brand could cash in on it. These kids are the ultimate sheep being guided by their corporate overlords.

RE: New High School Trend - Hallway Swimming
Die Hipster was a great site but it is no longer active.
http://diehipster.wordpress.com/
There are some epic anti-Beta/Omega/SWPL rants in a lot of the posts and comments.
Here is a tasty red-meat sample:
Quote:These self-absorbed, attention-starved, talentless, pseudo-creative, wanna-be city types have sterilized, homogenized and erased any real culture in parts of Brooklyn beyond belief and I don’t see it getting any better anytime soon. Sure, many of these hipsters have read my site and felt the pain of being exposed as out-of-place annoyances – but all they need to do to feel better is run around the corner to the nearest gentrification latte shop or quirky food joint or bike lane or gallery or kickball field and see mirror images of their “unique” selves. Then they temporarily forget about us obstructive natives who don’t understand city living the way a bearded guy named Reid or Caleb does who arrived here from Minnesota or Oregon with a trust fund and a dream 3 years and 2 months ago.
These culdesacian culture vultures have basically destroyed art and music just about to the point of irreparable. The price of such simple things like rent, coffee and certain foods have doubled and tripled because of these zany cockrag hipster fucks who glorify everything as if they discovered it. These smug, parentally funded interloping idiots pay $11 for two poached eggs and a leaf of fucking kale – and not on Park Avenue but in working class Brooklyn neighborhoods!!! Pizza, pudding, tacos and cupcakes are now earth-shattering, tastier than ever items (according to hipster wannabe foodies who have infiltrated the media) because some sickly-looking, heavily-tattooed, garage rock band failure who arrives to work via pogo stick or unicycle makes it?

RE: New High School Trend - Hallway Swimming
This is true, and is pretty much what a French professor had to say in the New York Times:
Quote:How did this happen? It stems in part from the belief that this generation has little to offer in terms of culture, that everything has already been done, or that serious commitment to any belief will eventually be subsumed by an opposing belief, rendering the first laughable at best and contemptible at worst. This kind of defensive living works as a pre-emptive surrender and takes the form of reaction rather than action.
and:
Quote:First, it signals a deep aversion to risk. As a function of fear and pre-emptive shame, ironic living bespeaks cultural numbness, resignation and defeat. If life has become merely a clutter of kitsch objects, an endless series of sarcastic jokes and pop references, a competition to see who can care the least (or, at minimum, a performance of such a competition), it seems we’ve made a collective misstep. Could this be the cause of our emptiness and existential malaise? Or a symptom?
There is a hipster fatigue permeating throughout society right now. I think ironic living is on its way out and we are entering in a new age of sincerity.
