There's no intrinsic value "having principles". Some of the worst people in history stuck to their principles.

That's fair, but I meant it in terms of a comparison with modern politicians who change their opinions every two weeks to vote-whore. At least with Thatcher you had a consistent ideology. Sure, it benefited some, namely the aspirational working class in the South, and made life horrible for others, namely the men in the north who worked in either mining or in factories. Plus, of course it benefited the already wealthy, as does all right wing conservatism.

There have been some very interesting debates on the radio this afternoon, even from former miners etc who's views on her have mellowed over the years. I'm not supporting her either way particularly as it was way before my time and I don't know the complex issues surrounding the decisions she made. However, as I said, it is PATHETIC and ridiculous that a bunch of 'socialist because it's trendy' kids on my facebook are gloating over her death when they probably have no idea who she is, and if they do, only know she's "bad" because of what someone else said.

My opinions of Margaret Thatcher's policies are mixed, but she had a backbone, which is the first characteristic necessary for a good leader, and something which virtually all politicians today lack. Requiescat in pace.

RIP Thatcher. There isn't a politician I don't have a gripe with, but she stuck to her guns and the UK was better off for more than a decade after her term. I do understand why the unproductive side of society hates her, but show me someone who has accomplished anything without polarizing the populace. She is second only to William Gladstone in my book.

She got the ball rolling on Deregulation that Reagan, Blair and Brown followed.

2. You say that Manufacturing was going 3rd World, again more uninformed tosh. The coal and ship building industries were feasable. There is enough coal in the UK to last another 500 years. It was a sustainable industry but deliberately destroyed by Thatcher to break the unions. Coal was even imported from abroad. Her attacks on union rights was just deplorable. I believe that workers have a right to representation.

3. Privitisation was an unmittigated disaster. There is something reprehensible about selling state assets to capitalist speculators for next to nothing. These state assets had been built up on the backs of the labour of the workers who built it, only for these assets to be sold to private speculators.

4. Her disgraceful treatment of the IRA Hunger Strikers. She refused to allot IRA men the status of political prisoners and instead recognised them as common criminals which they were not. They acts were politically motivated. In Northern Ireland there was Shoot to kill, summary executions and widespread torture of suspects in custody.

Margaret Thatcher won three elections in a row. The country couldn't have being any clearer in rejecting the socialism on offer at the time.

I am always curious as to how socialists explain their lack of success in elections? That is a serious question by the way. I have studied alot of Karl Marx, and am genuinely interested in the different schools of political and economic thought. I am just curious as to why the working classes doesn't back the party that is set up to look after their interests.

For instance - I read somewhere, that during Thatcher's reign - she attracted more votes from the working classes than did Labour.

Not going to really comment on Thatcher's from a political point, as I'm not British and I was just a kid when she was in power, but I do have a lot of respect for her demeanor. While any woman in that high a position would have to take on masculine qualities to compete with men, I think it is unfair to judge her as some harbinger of feminism. For one thing, she was an older woman, and it's just a fact of psychology that as women age they become more masculine and for men the opposite.

Moreover, she despised feminism, and called it a poison, as an earlier poster pointed out, and feminists in turn despise her. Which is truly ironic because she should be a poster child for everything they profess. Yet another example of how their actions and their words do not match up. They can't see that she represents everything they hope to accomplish because their true aim is more in line with a kind of cultural Marxism and her politics were in direct opposition to that goal.

I think it's interesting that she studied a hard science in school (Chemistry) and was even a researcher before she got into politics. She was obviously an extreme exception among females, and had to be to reach the position she did among men. But again, I disagree in the estimation that she was masculine, to my fanciful American imagination she comes across as the very ideal of a British lady in her comportment.

I lived over there during the anti-war protests and the crowds consisted of ugly, borderline subhumans of a type of rarely otherwise seen in the city.
