There's a lesson amidst this insanity, however. Spending a little time comforting a girl post-bang pays off in terms of your own safety. All these stories of regret rape seem to have one thing in common: the guy bolted after the deed was done, leaving the girl to rationalise her looseness with feelings of being used, violated and abandoned. This can quickly transform the event into rape in her mind, especially with feedback from her girlfriends ("omg you were, like, totally raped").

I think crying rape could also be an ego defense mechanism for women. If the guy just uses her for sex and never contacts her again she is undesirable. However by changing it to rape she becomes desirable again. She didn't want to have sex but the guy wanted her so bad he was willing to rape her. With this rationalisation she instantly goes from being undesirable to very desirable.

These behaviors are often the result of a child acting out sexual abuse from an adult on another child. I had a family friend who had this happen. Her daughter (age 5) was molested by another girl (13). When she called the thirteen year old dad, he was not shocked at all, but calmly replied "oh" and the was silent. She put two and two together and realized he was sexually abusing his daughter, who internalized the abuse and acted it out on her kids. Needless to say, the family was deviated and they're still healing from that one.

I wouldn't be surprised if, especially given Dunham's treatment of sex and her own body, there wasn't some history of sexual abuse. Her mother and sister appear in her first film and the whole dynamic struck me as very odd. Demons run in families.

The thing is our culture doesn't know how to handle a story like this. It's considered weird experimenting and written off as a personal anecdote, despite the fact if an adult were to do it - or even a male minor - they'd be looking at prison for life. Getting too deeply into the story would mean questioning our cultures caviler attitude towards both sexuality and children, and the idea families are disposable relative structures, rather than the only thing separating us from the lizards.
