In addition to Hostile Work Environments, let's not forget dramaticly increased penalties for drunk driving. If you consistently got drunk and drove home on workdays, sooner or later you're eating 10K in legal bills and fines. Just not worth it anymore.

The laws have not only killed Happy Hours but overall bar business in my area.

Most bars that are surviving are doing it on weekend business. They are dead during the week for the most part.

Rather, it's that most informal social institutions are disappearing.

Mark Minter kind of hinted at this in his post describing life in the Boomer heyday of the 70's and 80's. Wherever you'd go you'd see people congregating - at the public pool, at the local park, at the mall, the video game arcade, roller rink, playground, and on and on. He pins this on the fact that there were more young people at that time, but I'd suggest it's also because youth back then were more outgoing and took more risks.

People today in the U.S. are just much less social and open to hanging out with people outside their social circle than they were a couple decades ago. That's why for most guys social circle game trumps cold approach. That's why the clubs aren't as packed as they were a generation ago. That's why even in places where you do see people - like in coffee shops or at the gym - they're all cloistered away, doing there own thing, on their laptop with their earbuds in, shutout from the outside world.

This is a pretty typical sunny day at Dolores Park in San Francisco. During Giants season people are everywhere, including nearby China Basin.

I would argue the exact opposite, you should always wear an undershirt, it's only a matter of whether it is a vneck or a crew neck. Of course I would never wear pants without underwear either, or shoes without socks.

I haven't worn underwear in about three years now.
