I was once told a few years back by a small time recording studio owner and recording engineer that there are officially more DJ's than guitarists by far as going on sales of guitars vs. DJ software and gear.

That guy worked his ass off, no easy path.

Hahaha he's a Mormon with a wife and kid who claims to have never done drugs. He's one of the best house artists of the last half a decade. I've seen him play nearly a dozen times.

Ten years ago, Paul Oakenfold was charging $1 Million per set.

Yea i heard he doesnt drink or do drugs, pretty crazy..since 99% of the crowd is on x or some other drug.

Its true hes up their at the top as far as DJ's go, Deadmau5 has some pretty sick stuff too, although he looks silly with that mouse head!

I remember back in the day in the early 90's hanging at the Tunnel and Limelight, pretty awesome DJs used to play there too, sure they werent making the cash some of these guys are making nowadays.

Some of these guys pulling in six figures a show are serious musicians. A lot of people fail to understand that. And I'm not surprised, with all the controversy over pre-planned sets and some DJs rising to stardom off only one EP. I'd love to be a DJ too, but man.. guys like Wolfgang Gartner, Kaskade, Tiesto.. they deserve their success.

Sad to hear Kaskade's such a bore. The stories I'v heard.. I know more than a couple chicks that have hooked up with Alesso, Nicky Romero, R3hab.. dude's pull ass. There's some other threads documenting the ease with which DJs pull. Fame game is unmatched.

Edit: Damn fucking good set. Wow.

I'm no great fan of Moby or anything, but he said something once that I found really interesting and true. He said that if you're a musician, or in a band, you should try your hand at being a dj. His point was that with a band, the gig $ is split 3/4/5 ways, but as a dj, you don't have to split it with anybody. This is one of my goals over the next 2 years, but it all revolves around obtaining a Macbook (pro) and other equipment/software. In any event, for those at least somewhat musically inclined anyway, I would imagine the learning curve is pretty smooth after some experience. What kind of status would being a dj give you? Not for everybody, but given the fact that I would imagine after a year or so of practice you could jump right in to decent-sized local clubs, using '..I should've been..' in the title of this thread is in some ways the op selling himself short. You can be dude - if you want to. It ain't like learning the piano.

I've got a few mates who are professional, big name DJs and a running theme is that it wasn't so much hard work that got them where they are; more lots of arse kissing. I used to do it semi professionally but tbh got sick of the whole 'scene' thing, too full of people trying too hard to be cool.

But yea, my advice to anyone wanting to make it as a DJ or the dance music industry in general is to focus equal amounts of attention to networking (arse kissing) and developing social circle. Most of my friends in the industry got into it by flyering, driving for people etc.

Most of those guys pulling in 100k a show are seeing small percentage of that money...a quick internet search and kaskade for example has an estimated net worth of 3 million. If he did 1 show a week at 100k thats 5.2 million a year and surely he does more shows than that.

As everyone above pointed out: you have to account for the selection bias (i.e. survivorship bias) when evaluating careers and lifestyles. For every superstar DJ, they are tons of DJs who are not successful. (That said, even the DJ who spins karaoke at the local dive bar still gets a boost.)

You have calculate your poon/work ratio, while factoring in your odds of failure. Being a DJ has a good ratio, but don't think you're guaranteed superstar status. Things with really high poon/work ratio are doctor, (certain types of) lawyer, and bartender. Any kind of profession that signals work, strength, intelligence, dominance, and adventure will help. But they don't all help to the same degree. Becoming a surgeon will help you more than winning a World of Warcraft championship. But being a surgeon is a lot of work. You can probably find better poon/work ratios than being a surgeon. Simply knowing basic game, regardless of career, helps a lot.

I think the guys that get paid a million dollars a show, were paid that once or something.

I am still in shock that someone would pay a DJ that much.

How is the promoter/venue/event going to recoup those costs?

I worked for law firms for 6 years and never met anyone with a good poon/work ratio

I'm shocked that top DJs get paid for "live" shows at all. I mean, more power to them and I would trade places with them without a second thought, but I'm just surprised people are willing to shell out concert priced tickets to see a guy press play on his computer synthesized creations.

Agreed, in order for you to get paid a lot in those types of fields, your must be the best of no one of pay you, average DJs don't even make a hundreth of that per show.

Dude, I was in Coney Island last summer on my bicycle and I saw TONS of young girls hanging out this bar near the baseball stadium there. I walked into the bar to see whats up, and it was packed with young girls in these multiple colored bikini's and crap. I asked one girl "who the hell is playing in the stadium 2night?" she goes "Kaskade". I said "who the hell is that?".

Kaskade sold out the entire stadium...75% women in the audience, easy.

If hes getting 100k+ a show why is his net worth listed at only 3 million...I suspect for special events they receive huge amounts but even looking at the top 20 DJ list to make the top 20 only required a net worth of 2 million. Not exactly outrageous. I suspect like many celebrity stuff the incomes are over hyped. I recall a site that listed contact information and booking prices a few years ago and as an example Aventura was asking 20k a show...they would obviously be performing in a stadium as well.

Even if we suggested the top 20 all have net worths of over 5 million which is contrary to what I read. There are more than 100 billionaires who are law graduates. Hence, with the amount of competition in DJing for a few guys getting big pay days it's hardly worth it.

The best at just about everything get paid exceptionally well. While djing sounds fun from a pussy perspective...most of those big name dj's appear to be older and by no means in their 20's. Quite a lot of risk to take, to make it if you ask me when they are sacrificing their 20's and in some cases there 30's to try and make it.

The mathematics of the claims of 100k+ normal for live shows doesn't make sense. A typical night club has maybe 500-1000 capacity. At 50 dollars a head thats only 50k. Obviously a bar owner would think thats a stupid investment. I imagine they get this to headline rare festivals.

Pauly D came to my old uni at a bar nearby a couple years ago at the height of jersey shore. May 200-300 people tops were there and tickets were 20-30 dollars (6-9k in revenue). Online around the time when I saw him dj it lists his fee as 40,000...logically that doesn't make sense. 40k for 9k in revenue?

Top DJ's frequently give live shows in the city I currently live at a local nightclub. The capacity is listed as 750 people. These guys often have shows for 5-20 dollars a head, this includes guys like Benassi. 20 dollars x 750 is only 15k in revenue.

I can't speak for the likes of 'Kaskade' (never heard of him) but it is quite a poorly kept secret that a lot of DJs/Producers who do live shows merely play a pre recorded CD and look busy...
